  • 100% sure she's not a geisha, only a traditional dancer. Geishas have shorter sleeves and tie their sash in a different way.

She may be a geisha playing a role, but for sure she's not dressed as a geisha.

  • Les japonais appellent ça de la danse??? mdr

  • maybe she is playing a speciel role

  • it's strange but possible. it's the most likely

  • this is a fake geisha she doesn't have those sleeves with the folds in them, and the obi is tyed wrong, and her hair is weird looking i'm 99.9% sure she is fake

  • Don't be a tool. I promise this is real. It doesn't get much more real than going to an invite only in Kyoto with a personal friend that happens to be a retired geisha.

  • she has her hair arranged with hair pins i think... and a comb, try to see some kunisada prints and you will see hairpins used to be very common, and they are still worn

  • @ethiopian32 I don't think that she is a geisha, if this is dance then it is theature, not real life. Plus she is not dressed as one to begin with. Hair & everything is of a young lady during edo era, not giesha which she is trying to depict herself as[young lady]. Still COOL

  • DONT watch memoirs of a geisha. Its all lies and fake.

  • You're trying too hard to be an elitist. Memoirs of a Geisha is a fantasy story for western women. The movie and novel are not historical references. Anyone thinking otherwise when they see it is written by an American man is a little naive.

  • zoom in some more...!

  • On youtube's 'Search for' bar, type in Mineko Iwasaki.

You can watch the interview with her regarding the book and the trouble she had to go through cause of it.

  • memoirs of a geisha-the book and the movie -suck!!! It's all lies! That stupid Golden guy should've been given the finger! I felt bad for Iwasaki-san, who had told him everything about her days as renowned geiko of gion and than reading the book to see it's based on a freakin' man-to-man prostitute! For more info, Search for: mineko iwasaki.

  • I totally agree with you. I think the worse thing was that they used a chinese actress to play that role. I'm thinkin a very dignifided Japanese women whould not be cought dead playing that role

  • Your an idiot. The movie and novel are obviously fictional. They even state so in the novel. The movie also says Memoirs of *A* Geisha. It doesn't specify a name you dink.

  • Thank you for pointing that out. I don't even remember when I typed such a comment! My sister doesn't make her own account on YouTube... she doesn't even like geisha. I really liked the book, heck I bought it not knowing what a geisha was at first. I was curious to know and found it hard to put the book down when I started. soon after I bought Miss. Mineko's book.

  • Don't call people that you dink! Suikanoamai, quit lying about liking the book, I know what you've said about Arthur Golden, nothing good. And for your information gangstagarfield, Memoirs of *A* Geisha is based utterly on Mineko Iwasaki's life!

  • If it was SO copied from her life, why are Sayuri's life and Mineko Iwasaki's lives completely different (other than they're both geisha)? Arthur Golden was taught about geisha by her, but the culture of the times and the personalities of the two women were quite different.

  • @Discordia5 Because that stupid american guy mixed up by tayu (courtesans who looks like geishas) and real geishas.

Theres no virginity-bidding with geishas but with tayus.

  • @kattmat That's actual not true to my understanding. I've read a number of (non-fiction) books that state that before prostitution was legalized in the late 1950s, every single geisha's virginity was sold (not necessarily BID on, but sold for money nonetheless.) It was considered a right of passage for all of them... according to my sources anyway, I'm starting to think I'll never be one to know for sure.

  • @Discordia5 Im pretty sure they have never been prostitutes.

Men are barely allowed inside a okiya (geisha house) so that no one woul question the chastity of the women there.

Mineko Iwasaki said that it was so ridiculous with the geisha-prostitute rumor. "We make so much money anyway, so would would we have to do that?"

  • @kattmat You must realize that Iwasaki had obvious ulterior motives in making such statements, and was a geisha after Japan began to validate womens rights. They didn't have "relations" at their houses, but occasionally at the actual tea houses after closing time (there were rooms built in ochaya strictly for the purpose.) ALL had their virginity sold prior to '57, and most had official affairs... yet respectable geisha were *paid for their TIME SPENT with clients.* Interpret that how you want.

  • @Discordia5 Because that stupid american guy didnt do his research and mixed up tayu (courtesans who looks like geishas) and real geishas.

Theres no virginity-bidding with geishas but with tayus. Geishas are professional artists. Tayus are whores.

  • Wow i want to see a geisha in real live to not just in Memoires of a geisha.

I love this movie so much but this geisha is good too

  • It's a maiko. :]

  • Actually she's a "Geiko" if you want to be technical.

  • actually a "geiko" is what the japanese describe as geisha. A maiko is not a geisha there is a difference.

  • ACTUALLY she is a geiko. Geiko is what geisha living in Gion are called. A maiko is a geiko in training. It happens that the woman dancing in my video is 45 years old. I assure you she is a geiko and not a maiko.

  • Geisha do not have their sleaves as long as a maiko a maikos leaves are placed down by her knees, if she was a true geiko then her sleaves would reach her mid drift of her waste when her arms were held to the side.

  • Okay nevermind I think I was wrong, I saw that her collar was white and that her obi was tied short in the back, it must just have to the way the kimono was designed but its still odd...

  • The sleaves are used in the dancing, so the length may have more to do with their dancing and not their standing.

  • huh? ethio japanese? lol

  • Reading Mineko Iwasaki's autobiography it says specifically that geiko is what the geisha of Gion Kobu calls themselves. The entire japanese population does not describe a geisha as a maiko they use "geisha" which is not the english word for a geiko the english word brought back by the soldiers was geesha girls. Most japanese have never seen geisha and know practically nothing about geisha.

  • can u be my geisha ? :P
