Ma perchè un video come questo non lo mandano mai in onda nelle TV, nemmeno quelle a tema musicale? Hanno forse paura che nessuno ascolti più le cagate che i produttori discografici gli propinano dalla mattina alla sera?
Genesis, Yes, King Crimson, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Emerson Lake & Palmer and countless others that I've failed to mention, where an intricate woven part of the musical fabric known as progressive/experimental rock. Today, we've come to know them and call them, The Masters!
I remember back in the 70's hearing the news that Peter Gabriel was leaving Genesis and, I must admit, I thought that would be the end of them... Peter Gabriel was Genesis! Then they released this and within minutes of listening to the opening track of Trick Of The Tail all my fears disappeared... This is still brilliant 30 years later!!! NOW I FEEL OLD :-|
Whoever decided to make a video for an almost 9 minute song back in 1976 definitely had a vision whether they knew it or not. Whether it was Genesis themselves or someone else, it's paying dividends now. Up until around 2005 this was hardly known. The 70s are being reborn through Youtube.
I was in the school music bands and I played the drums and I can tell you that when I used to listen to it back then, with my amount of musical training, this music absolutely ripped at my heart. I can't explain it exactly but it was like curling up and loving every atom of it's existence.
Seeing it being played is so beautiful.
When I see Phil actually playing (not just listening to him) he looks such a free young man doing what he loves.
A Trick Of The Tail is one of the very best Rock albums of all time. It happens to be one of my all time favorites & rates in my book in the top ten. Excellent from the begining to the end. I like Peter Gabriel, but Genesis did fine with Phil as the lead before they went all pop. I even like them as pop rock, but this is the era when they really shined muscially. I am grateful to Tommy Gun for posting this rare gem that we as fans can appreciate this. I would also recommend A Trick of the Tail.
Classic Genesis is the best. Radio playlists of both Genesis and Phil are fine and dandy, but it's the great lost songs and lyrics of the true artistic mind in the buried tracks in time that really give you an view to the misical soul of a brilliant group of minds. AWESOME SONG AND LYRICS!
Ah, , , it's obvious to me that the greatest period of music was '67-'76. What a beautiful song, such drama in the performance of this band, Tony Banks is such a master on the keys, give me him and Rick Wakeman anyday.
Ok, historically, with the history of the North Stars it would be one of these people. Why #21?
" Derrick Smith, Perry Berezan, Moe Mantha, Dirk Graham, George Ferguson, Jack Carlson, Bill Hogaboam, Robbie Laird, Dennis Maruk, Doug Rombough, Dave Cressman, John Flesch, Danny Grant, Bill Plager".
To this day when I forst saw this video in 90' I was shocked to see a hometown N stars jersey. #21? What in the hell is the story behind this choice Phil. Hey, I grew up on them too but you are from across the pond. How kick ass it is to see you in a N stars jersey I just want to know why Phil? Oh, this song is AMAZING BTW!!!!!!
get the vinyl album, put it on the deck at 33 1/3 RPM and open the gatefold sleeve of the album cover, immerse yourself in the beautiful pictures, lyrics and feel of the cover and listen to ALL the tracks and let your mind wander and LISTEN to this track and the rest of Trick of the tail album. The whole experience beats entirewly the CD or videos. Magic
This depends. Phil can't sing The Lamb like Peter. Phil will drag you down into your soul with the songs on A Trick Of The Tail, but Peter will show you a darker, or more sexual, or just flat out stranger side of yourself.
A Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering were the two most beautiful albums under Phil Collins. It was too bad that he had to sell himself out after that.
thanks for the post. I never even thought to look for videos of this era, other than live stuff...this is BEFORE music videos....love it...pre Gabriel and after. Thanks again
interesting at the least. not sure how committed mr. gabriel could be to lyrics that he did not pen. this (ripples) was the first genesis i ever heard, back around the time it was released. i think mr collins does a very nice job with it. the chorus is amazing, so beautiful.
Genesis es la mejor banda que haya existido en el rock sinfónico. Gracias Tommygun por esta maravillosa pieza de la época Collins. Desde Buenos Aires, Argentina te saludo.
Thank you for this one Tommygun....takes me back to when I was 13 and heard this album for the 1st time...1974...my older brother was playing it and when this song came on I was an instant Genesis fan for life.
A little less awsome? What band are you talking about? Obviously, you didn't see any of their last tour. Even in their sixties, these guys still bring it!
Jay-also reminds me of teen years-Hackett ruled but as all great bands go life goes on. Granted Phil bailed like Peter but that's life. Long live the music of GENESIS!!!
Yeah i was at knebworth in 78 miss goodwin and thats where i met your then boyfreind. I used to call him Mr Bendy, untill he stopped drinking White Lighting!! It was a very special moment when Genesis sang this, 10,000 lighters were held aloft and we all swayed in tune. And then 10,000 people went "ahh fucking ell" as we all burnt our fingers together. Great times they were. I married Mr Bendy by the way. Posted by Nigel(any which way)Collins.
This reminds me of Knebworth 1978. I was there with my then boyfriend, the sun was setting and Genesis sang this - I can still feel that special moment
"Ripples" is about the passage of time, and how this time 'ripples' away. As it passes, one will lose their looks. a 'blue girl' a reference to a school girl (wearing dark blue uniforms)
I should have said is the electric guitar @ 4:25 min recorded and then played backwards on the final track. If you listen to the note it fades in then muted @ the end.
And as poetic as it was... here we are, ripples never come back. Just glad I enjoyed the ride... Sail away... ripples never come back.. they've gone to the other side...
Great solo... Great Music, Ohhh... I was 16 back them. It sounds just as good as it did 30 years ago...
The Celtic legends of Morgan LeGrey personified. She who stands nutral with a foot and an aspect in three dimensions can attune to Your forced desire of an invocation that is founded in this same spirit of nutrality, non-judgement and respect for the souls we call witches who KNOW there is as much a place in the progressive universe for the darkness as there is for the light.
for the souls of the faithful departed, sail away, lovely launched angels honeycombed tails brushed and faces reborn on the lee side winds of the breaking shore a'crashing tomultuously death knoll only to drag back the sand and the sunlight and the moonshine
How clever of you to 'drag' a quotation of Aleister Crowley into this energy. That Abadon follower would never in a million years be able to listen to this song without fear of karma
Genesis need to proof that they can survive after GABRIEL left the groop, and even worst, when Hackett left after Wind and Watering. The music changed from Genesis I,and this is master piece of the phase II, showing a new face in Phill'lyrics.
this is a good song, trick of the trail was an excellent cd, as is wind and wuthering, but hey genesis is good, saw them live last year and they still rocked wish gabriel coulda been there maybe there will be another reunion maybe???? but this song is good....
just not as good as when gabriel was in the band. they at least explored their full range of musical talent back then. trick of the tail was the last decent thing they did.
The instrumental part of this song (from 4:00 to 6:43) is the perfect way to explain why this kind of music is sometimes called symphonic rock. In my opinion, it has nothing to envy in terms of musical quality to the best classical compositions, and I consider sound around 6:00 as the best moment in the history of music, and I mean ALL kind of music I've heard. Then, the video shows Steve and Tony performing such wonderful harmonies that if there's an image of GOD playing music it must be this.
Actually, I have a 45 somewhere, where Ripples is the 'B' side. Punching below its weight, I thought at the time, and nothing really changes. Time travel by Youtube - must get back!!!!!
you hit the nail on the heed there - we waste yonks on you choob thinking about the old days etc - good hoot though and it is "the last time that we will look like today"
I saw that amazing concert at the Montreal Forum on march 2nd 1977...this one was Minnesota, but it was the same tour. I t was just fantastic..thanks for the memories.
Anyone noticed that short passage when Tony Banks played the tubular bells? Never saw him playing any percussion or mallet instruments. Is he credited on the album for percussion? The synth is a ARP 2600.
Genesis had many shapes over time, and I like something in them all!!
I wish that they made a reunion and made a consert with old songs and made a DVD/blueray with hiquality sound and picture (like eagles consert Hell Freeze Over)
Brings back warm memories of being a teenager in 1970s England. Walking my dog across the hills. Camping under the stars. All the bittersweet daydreams of youth. A truly glorious and timeless song that ripples through your soul.
Thank you so much my dear brothers Fons and Jos (+) for forcing me to learn to lissen to Genesis!!! To think what those guys did when they where only 19 /20 years old...MAGIC!!!!
All in all you are a very dying race, placing trust in such a cruel world, you never had the things you thought you should have had, and you'll not get them now, and all the while in perfect time his falling on the ground ...
Magical - I remember one stunning summer afternoon at school just after the album had been released when a friend of mine set up his speakers to broadcast this song to the whole world because it was too lovely to keep to himself.
I got to know genesis trough my dad and he took me to their concert in june, I started crying during this one! I felt stupid but couldn't stop. But what makes me sad is that I can't share this music with any of my friends as they don't like it... you have to be patient and listen often to get used to this if you don't know this kind of music. Anyway I'm glad my dad's there because guys in their twenties... :p
hope my husband will like this because my children are definately going to love them!
At 4:14 of this tune, I used to think the song was ending & another was beginning, when I was a little kid. It used to almost freak me out, IN A GOOD WAY. I was amazed at the arrangement! This still one of my favorites. And, they can still perform it brilliantly.
The song was recorded in two parts, and you can hear it... looking at the pictures at the transition, it seems that Tony Banks beginns a bit to early with his fast movements on the piano... as it fades in... :-) So there is a reason why it sounds like two songs. Live I think it much more a unit.
Starting at 4:25, Steve Hackett was so good at making his guitar cry.... like in this song, Firth of Fifth and in his solo album « Voyage of the Acolyte »... WOW !!!
Buying this album as a lad, I was concerned about Gabriel's leaving. About 30 years later, I still feel the same exact feeling when I hear this great song. AMAZING!
I am a die hard Gabriel era Genesis fan but feel that this is one of their best songs of all time.
Since 4:15 I have a visual and auditory orgasms.

I adore this song. And from 4:15 to 6:33 it is nothing but pure amazement that's one of the most beautiful sound I've ever heard in my life.

this is a good song, trick of the trail was an excellent cd, as is wind and wuthering, but hey genesis is good, saw them live last year and they still rocked wish gabriel coulda been there maybe there will be another reunion maybe???? but this song is good....
smiley283231 3 years ago
just not as good as when gabriel was in the band. they at least explored their full range of musical talent back then. trick of the tail was the last decent thing they did.
oh what do i know im just a kid...

don't agree, wind & wuthering was also very good (in my opinion). it seems it was worst to the band to loose steve than peter...

Due to lack of space I had to omit:
a)Thanks a lot for uploading this!
b)Compared to those magnificent passages the rest of the song sounds to me (sorry!) musically a bit banal.

And we're lucky that they even had the wherewithal to record a music video for this song 32 years ago!
Tommygun1028 3 years ago
Sure... But is this video commercially available, just it or as a part?
eakincreek 3 years ago
It's on the Genesis DVD "The Video Show"

Anyone knows the real meaning of this song? However, does this song has any kind of meaning? If this has one, what is it?
Whoever answers this question, thanks a lot!

Actually, I have a 45 somewhere, where Ripples is the 'B' side. Punching below its weight, I thought at the time, and nothing really changes. Time travel by Youtube - must get back!!!!!

Anyone noticed that short passage when Tony Banks played the tubular bells? Never saw him playing any percussion or mallet instruments. Is he credited on the album for percussion? The synth is a ARP 2600.

I lost a friend by an accident in the 80's. I heard this song a few days after the funeral..."Ripples never come back...". Neither does he.

And, they can still perform it brilliantly.
klwewf 4 years ago
The song was recorded in two parts, and you can hear it... looking at the pictures at the transition, it seems that Tony Banks beginns a bit to early with his fast movements on the piano... as it fades in... :-) So there is a reason why it sounds like two songs. Live I think it much more a unit.
Thomasooo2003 3 years ago
It's still beautiful-- has withstood the test of time.
