I just watched the Athens lighting ceremony. I'm afraid the Spaniards have ruined this for every other country in the future. NOBODY would take this kind of risk.
I remember this I was 13. I was in awe, and I fancied Epi - he did the job really well and Antonio Rebello inspired me too. I wanted to be a torchbearer ever since. I loved the lighting ceremony, the whole thing was so poetic!!! xx
Maybe, but it could also be true that the arrow wouldn't even have to hit the olympic torch. Nobody saw the arrow go on, it's very possible that he could have even missed, but an automated system lit the torch.
No question it's real. Not only have I been to the stadium to see its really not that far, but also there was a back up plan that, if he was going to miss, that it would be lit.. they never used it.
This is the most memorable. If you were watching it then when the arrow was lighted, everyone knew what was going to happen but when he shot the arrow all the air was sucked out by everyone watching, then BOOM! still the most spectacular and magnificent lighting ceremony yet conceived. Sheer audacity and brilliance and suspense!
NOMÉS A BARCELONA ES PODIA FER UNA CERIMÒNIA D'INAUGURACIÓ AIXÍ DE GUAPA I ORIGINAL!!! OSTIA!!! ES CLAR QUE SÍ, PER QUE SOM ELS MILLORS DEL MÓN! ENCARA QUE NI A CASA NOSTRA S'ENS RECONEGUI COM A TAL! VISCA BARCELONA!
I can vaguely remember these games as a kid, but seeing this video brings back such fond memories. This way of lighting the flame is definitely the greatest ever done. Every host city has tried their darndest to outdo it but it's impossible, it was the most creative way to light a flame EVER. I admit the Bejeing lighting was pretty good, but definitely cannot compare to Barcelona. BRAVO ESPANA
I remember this well. The anticipation was building when the torch was being carried to the platform. People were wondering how the cauldron so far away was going to be lighted. And then when it was being passed to the archer, people were stupefied with disbelief that anyone would even attempt it. And when the arrow was released, it sucked all the oxygen from everyone watching. Then BULLSEYE! The most spectacular lighting EVER! The suspense and dramatic effect will never be duplicated again!
milovy is right. BEST EVER - GAME OVER. WILL NEVER BE SURPASSED. Who are these soulless fuckers commenting here about whether it's fake or not? It's just PEFECT.
well they tried a cauldron out of the water in 2000, a flying man which looked like he was walking near the ceiling in 2008, lighting a cauldron inside a dome in 2010, and fireworks all around a stadium to light a flame in 2006. I think they did try lol to have a unique lightning since these games. =P
@milovy Did you not see the Sydney Olympics? That was one of the most elaborate and technically complicated cauldron lighting sequences ever. It malfunctioned but it certainly wasn't a plain old "stick the torch in a bowl" kind of ceremony. I think actually, that many have tried to be too fancy. Barcelona's flame lighting method was so successful because it was unique and had that dramatic element of "what if he misses?" to it, and for that reason, Barcelona's is my fave.
It was not a flame in the caudlron, but the gas was turned on. He did not have to shoot it in the cauldron, only through the cloud of gas. That still required getting it within 6 or 7 ft! An amazing feat either way, and definitely not a miss. STILL the most dramatic and awe-inspiring lighting of the cauldron ever.
Te best olypic games opening ceremony never seen before... never seen after... i still remerber... although i was a little kid but there are moments that remains in your memories for all your life... this was one of them for me...
OK...here's a question...what possible good does giving out that information serve? I hate people like you that won't let you have a moment...that have to always tear stuff down jut to make themselves feel better.
This is an awesome torch light ceremony. But, the opening ceremony is NOT an Olympic Event! Who cares if Vancouver's torch partially failed? All I care about is the actual games and the only reason I watched this year was because my girlfriend wanted to watch it.
Truth is that arrow missed the cauldron. They figured it could happen so inside was already small flame and when arrow passed the cauldron they just increased the flame. It's widely known fact. Spanish newspapers had it 2 days after ceremony cause someone snitched it out
@malizlato That's not true, what happened is that the flame was not supposed to fall inside, but just to pass over it and flame the gas. It turned out just exactly as planned without any mistake.
This moment will never be equalled. I saw it live when it happened and I couldn't believe my eyes then and it is more incredible every time I see it. The Barcelona ceremonies, both opening as well as closing, were the finest in the history of the modern Olympics as far as I'm concerned. *** BRAVO BARCELONA ***
Truly most breathtaking and overwhelming moment in the Olympics I've ever seen. Especially because of the choice of the person who lit the olympic cauldron.
Also two most memorable ceremonies (opening and closing) in the history of Olympics in my humble opinion.
I was 14 and stayed overnight watching the ceremony and was late for the school in the morning - I got caught!! It was my first time watching a live telecast of olympic opening ceremony. The paralympic archer shooting the olympic flame and the moment the cauldron ignited made me CRIED!!!It was so amazing ever......congrats Barcelona!!!Malaysia
tell me how this could be fake?!?! if it was we would have seen it fly past...plus this guy could hit a bullseye a mile away ....that cauldron was not a mile away...jus sayin
Fake or not... everybody, children and adult people, believed that, and was a BEAUTIFUL visual effect that chilled everybody in the world. The best lightning in the history :)))
I'm a Catalan from Barcelona, and this day I was 12 years old. I was in the stadium with my parents, and I remember the incredible silence in the stadium when the arrow fly by to the cauldron (anybody knows before what kind of lighting they gona do, it was a secret)... when I remember that I have always chills. It was very simple, but pure and brilliant. Maybe it was a fake, but I think that this is secondary.
@SoyunSerSuperior I was 6 and I saw the ceremony at friends of my parents' home. I remember that I thought "and this is must be being watched in every country?? Everybody watched this?" and I it was first time I felt proud of being Spanish. Second time was when we won Football World Cup, but it doesn't give me chills when I remember it as when I see videos of Barcelona '92 :)
What happens to each flame that lights the next? Do they just light a cig with it then dump a cup of water on it or what? What are the ceremonies for that...?
It wasn't meant to hit the target but pass over it to ignite the gas coming out of it. But it's true, according to wikipedia at least, that he did miss since the huge flame ignites from the bottom instead of from where the arrow reaches the gas. From this angle it's hard to tell though (which is why they did it like that, I'm sure!!)
From the angle shown in this video its pretty much impossible to tell if the flame ignited from the bottom up, but i guess they might have done both, since it would be catastrophic if nothing happened at all:>
hahaha this makes Beijing look bad, this was the greatest cauldron lighting ever cuz it shows the natural talent of a human being, not wires lifting him up or fancy technology lighting the cauldron
yep he missed because the arrow wasn't supposed to get in you dummie.. there was gaz pumping from the giant plate and the arrow only had to pass above it to light the whole thing.
P.S: I know it cause I was a volunteer on the other side waiting for the arrow making sure nobody was getting hurt in any way.
I was 10 and I saw it live. It was astonishingly amazing. Sydney was JUST OK, too long, surprising because of the water thing but, just ok. Athens was very heart-taking because of the music, but too many sexual references (withe fallus coming down and then, once lit, it goes up...) So, Barcelona '92 were the BEST Olympic games of all history.
Agreed Oneil. When I first saw this as it happened, I was Nine. Have seen many cauldron lightings since then, but none surpass this. Whenever an Olympic event comes up, this is the first thing that comes to my mind.
In my opinion, of all the Olympic flame ceremony, the 1992 Barcelona Olympic was still the most motivated, magnificent, thrilling & hair-raising of them all. The pinnacle of the event was the uncertainty if the archer (Antonio Rebollo) can hit the cauldron with his arrow. The moment was thrilled with an outstanding music theme. Barcelona, I salute you!
That was an absolutely spectacular cauldron lighting. It tops the Torino 2006 and the Bejing 2008 cauldron lightings combined. This was raw and true marksmanship from a master of Archery. I find it refreshing to see no "Hollywood" effects, just pure and perfect aim from Antonio Rebollo.
This one is definitely the best in terms of the skill and thrill of it all. I have to say that the 2000 Olympics in Sydney was the most surprising, when Cathy Freeman touched the flame to the pool of water around her and the water ignited and rose up, that was pretty awesome too.
London, pay attention. This is how it's done.

not to look on the bad side of this but the arrow didnt actually make it in...he missed.
This is the best olympic troch ceremony ever.

yep he missed because the arrow wasn't supposed to get in you dummie.. there was gaz pumping from the giant plate and the arrow only had to pass above it to light the whole thing.
P.S: I know it cause I was a volunteer on the other side waiting for the arrow making sure nobody was getting hurt in any way.

La musica te gusta??? es horrible !!
ortizricci 2 years ago

I was 10 and I saw it live. It was astonishingly amazing. Sydney was JUST OK, too long, surprising because of the water thing but, just ok. Athens was very heart-taking because of the music, but too many sexual references (withe fallus coming down and then, once lit, it goes up...) So, Barcelona '92 were the BEST Olympic games of all history.

Haha, I couldn't even begin to imagine the chaos of NY hosting the olympics. It'll be just as bad in Chicago if they win the 2016 games.

I have to say that the 2000 Olympics in Sydney was the most surprising, when Cathy Freeman touched the flame to the pool of water around her and the water ignited and rose up, that was pretty awesome too.
spork24601 3 years ago
Yeah, I just loved Cathy Freeman´s smile when the flame was lit! :)
It was amazingly beautiful!
And what a releif it must have been for her to get that medal in the end...
Pressure? Nah....
Only a continent´s...
Great athlete, that woman! :)

Huge moment, most amazing lighting with the arrow, never repeated in further olympic games.
