If your currently using windows vista-7 then there is a issue with the graphics of the game rendering while aero is working in the background. There is no way to permanently fix this issue, but there is a temporary solution. Before you open AOE right-click your screen and click screen resolution. Leave the screen up in the background and load AOE. That should stop any Blips in the map (I.E. Water and ground distortion.)

Personally i'd say get medieval 2 if your computer will run it, if not then Rome. And if you're a star wars fan get Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds, its just Age of Empires 2 with star wars stuff, its awesome.

Age of Empires and Age of Mythology were both made by Ensemble Studios, and they're both great games. AoM is better than the rest of the series in my opinion though.
