Bob Geldof (frontman of Irish punk band Boomtown Rats) and Midge Ure (frontman of Ultravox) organized this mega event back then. On that same day (13 July 1985), there were two stages: one in London and one in Philadelphia, on which many significant bands and artists at the time performed parallel. There was live broadcasting from both stages on a worldwide scale. The single raised up to 9 million British Pounds and the events 74 million, all destined to enable survival in Ethiopia etc.

@johnluke1169 Not sure what the USA has to do with this. Live Aid was put together by an Irishman, and most of the people on that stage are from the British Isles. There were American participants, but Live Aid was the brainchild of Bob Geldof.
