man, those were truly the "good ol' days" back then :)
Everything was cheap and life was good - although salaries were also quite low too. But these were truly some great times. I only hope we can all see times like these again someday.
Being a life-long resident of Southern California and a monorail fan it was not entirely the fault of local leaders that a monorail system was never built here. There has been at least five different bond measures on the county and state ballot since Walt's monorail went into operation at Disneyland, and an ignorant public voted them all down. The residents of Southern California have no one but themselves to blame for the smog and traffic jams for the past 50 years.
Too bad the greedy MTA people don't get it. They've wasted millions on stupid slow moving "light rail systems" that cost 10 times more to construct than a monorail system Walt's 1959 technology is still better than anything they can build today... how sad!
A monorail can't cross at a cross over and it needs expensive concrete tracks and supports. I've also never seen a monorail run at ground level. They're always elevated. How is a monorail cheaper?
Yes, a Monorail has to be elevated, but even at Elevation, it uses up less land than the current system. Also, if you look at the amount of concrete and steel used on just the Metro Gold Line alone, you could have easily built 2.5 Monorail lines with that material. I was there during the MTA meetings with the engineers, and it was all about money and greed They knew that an elevated Monorail would not stop an ambulance from crossing towards Huntington Hospital...
oh yea what happens when it stop up there running up there do you call the fire truck with the hook and ladder to get the depressed wiry people down .stuck
L.A. should have listened...then I wouldn't be in traffic all the time...they wer proposed a monorail solution in the late 50's ..they laughed ..cause they thought it was just an amusment park ride ...jokes on them now...massive traffic...

Anyone else hear Nixon correct Walt when Walt said, "Mr. Nixon?" Nixon was nobody compared to Walt Disney.

matterhorn310 has it right! Just those few words sums it up very well: "...and an ignorant public voted..."

Looks like fake monorail shine at 6:44.

Nixon really was kinda creepy, wasn't he? He's trying hard to be affable (or to affect affability anyway), and just not hitting the note.

We've got one in Seattle. It works fine and people seem to like it. Not sure why nobody else (other than Vegas) has one.

@doesrealityexist You dont have to elevate a monorail system, you can use gyroscopes.

Tokyo's monorail system has had ground-level tracks since it was built in the 60's... and that's JUST Tokyo... there are more.

Man I wish I could've experienced the original Disneyworld.
They were outrageously optimistic of the future and yet they'd all be sorely disappointed now. How sad.

It's never been a problem, it can be pushed along by another train behind it. There are monorails in other countries that work fine.

That was so cool to see. Too bad the future of public transportation did not go that way. So much for the "free"way!

@tofubeast What do you mean? There are monorails everywhere. Look at all the videos over there to the right for example. ----->
