this does look fun.... i can tell some of the rules of the track are... slower driver must let faster driver pass, slower driver must wave the faster drive by and can only pass on the straights... right?
The crash was not due to early apex, it happened because the driver couldn't catch the rear end. Looks like the tail got light and started sliding, the correction came very late and had no effect.
It's good to hear that no one got hurt and the car is back up and running but definately, more practise for the driver as he clearly needs to get used to the rear engine. A skidpad is a lot safer place to learn car control than a highspeed track.
Ya that was just a driver error....it happens.......The transition on the pavement there is what caused the loss of grip, but poor ol Bryce just didn't react quick enough. :(
This is why I'm glad I autocrossed (and did some TT for about 2) for about 7 years before hitting the track. Catching slides from 40-90mph is what I learned to do :)
Dad...do you two ever go to any of the Mav Region events @ Mineral Wells?
Have you changed the steering ratio in this car? Just watching, it looks like about a 10:1. I for one appreciate the quicker ratios...Looking forward to your future posts.
Factory ratio is in the ball park of 14:1. Assuming your 993 does not have a variable system like the 987 which becomes more "effective" 15 degrees off TDC. Karts and Cayman S. I love the air cooled cars, but my preferred style is more suited to a mid engine layout.
Ive also been into this tire wall, not with me driving, but with an instructor driving his car. It seems the "The Bermuda Triangle" is good at upsetting cars, especially mid/rear engine cars.
Driver is well, and it is a tight spot on the track.... My Son, was at the wheel. The Bermuda Triangle is a good name for the corner. Car back up and running now.
Not a whole lot of damage to the instructors car, he was driving a Lotus and it just cracked the rear clam and bent the diffuser. We did not hit the wall near as hard.
All is well and the car is back on the track. Will be running with several in the NVR-E-NUF Gang the next couple of weekends. Need to get MSR to name all the corners on the new track, "The Bermuda Triangle" needs to be one of them.
I hope that some good comes from this with a greater discussion and focus on this section of the track with the various Drivers Education Activities. I know it was talked about when I started driving DE's, but with what I have learned recently, this should be stressed the way the folk stressed the "risks of the Tunnel Turn" at Barber.
MSR is a wonderful facility and very, very safe (as is clearly the case even with this kind of "off").... We just need to let folks know the risk.
Man, such a Bummer! He was doing great till then. I have heard some guys call the tringle shaped patch of missing asphalt at the apex of that turn "The Bermuda Triangle" since once you cross it you never know where you will end up!
Glad no one was hurt, look forward to running again with you guys soon.
Cody, you are so right.... Talked to several top notch Drivers that have hit that tire wall. And several more that came within a foot or two before the speed came off the car.
Bryce was pushing the evvelope, and had been on that edge before, however, it is the "High Risk" point on the track. Something for everyone running the 3.1 at MSR to be aware of.....
Now, need to get the "A Bikers Garage #034" back on the track.
hmmmm.... ok his line wasn't optimal to get through that corner at that speed but he seemed to be on most of the apex on the right to its end. With an early apex he would have ran out of room on the left and end up in the grass; or simply the speed along have taken him off track too. So, maybe if he had mowed the grass on the left instead of trying to keep it on track then he could have road it out in hindsight.
Dang. Doesn't really look like an early apex as opposed to going in too hot and still have the wheel cranked to the right to try to stay on course, which caused fishtail. Maybe he didn't catch it fash enough or it was just too hot to be corrected.
Good input/thought. One thing is that the track is off camber in this section (not easy to see in the video)..... And rather narrow relative to the flow of the corner. Bryce had been through the corner at close to this speed, as have I.... And it is an area where a few feet make a difference. Being displaced on the apex added to the challenge of making the corner.
Hope to get things up and rolling so I can run at Hallett in October. Have plenty to do to get her ready, however, looks like it can all come together if there is not some "hidden" damage.

As far as I know, the steering ratio is stock? Not sure what stock ratio is relative to the 10:1......... What do you drive?

How much damage did the Instructors car sustain?

I when off there the first day I got my track car. I was able to drive straight off left of the curbing. But bent a rim and blew a tire.

Seemed to me, the way the car got upset at the apex, reacted afterward, coupled with the sounds it made, that he blew the left rear tire at the apex.
MFE92 3 years ago
Interesting assessment, left side tires both had air in them. Thanks for the input.

Matt, that is a wonderful name for the turn... And accurate. So many folks have been challenged by it, with many ending up like Bryce. Take care.
ManURFast 3 years ago
Early and not far enough to the left, but... that transition is bad news and far, far too many cars are ending up in the walls exiting that corner.

Definitely early apex. I drive that track all the time and IMHO he turned in early without being far enough to the left before the turn in as well.
