I find it a bit disappointing that the entire band dynamic changed after Mike Portnoy's departure. The sound of the album, the lyrical content (the best part of the album sadly) and the live experience (I wasn't there personally for this tour, but I've read that MP had a big role in tour planning). When Kevin Moore left the band, DT released FII, which wasn't their best but still had some stand out tracks. This is still DT, but in my opinion it's their weakest album not counting WDADU.

@BOOLsheet It's ironic that your name is BOOLsheet. Do you have a sheet with a 0 or 1 next to every DT album to decide if it's good or bad? Some things are black and white, opinions are not. I'm not saying ADTOE is a bad album - it's more consistent and mature than FII, but I feel like FII has 2 epics and some solid tracks whereas ADTOE has a few great tracks but no real epic. I guess I prefer the free flowing, emotional, prog rock sound rather than the structured modern metal sound.

@curtisgtr lol you're making yourself look worse. just stop now. ADTOE has no epics? ROFL. What the hell is Breaking All Illusions? That's the MOST epic song they've had since Learning to Live. The only truly great song on FII is Lines. ADTOE is the closest they've gotten to returning to the prog metal sound that started this whole thing with Images. The term 'emotional' is being used in a completely arbitrary way. I think it's a very emotional album. FII is their worst album ever.

@BOOLsheet Agree to disagree then. Try listening to the album again without reviews, ratings and other people's opinions in your subconscious. Trial of Tears is the other epic on FII in my opinion, by the way.

I bought the album and think it's decent, it's just not up to par with the ridiculously high standard that DT has set for themselves. I don't think this can really be compared to I&W - very different styles. Maybe SDOIT. Breaking All Illusions is a great track though, I agree.

There are some of those sort of tracks on this album, definitely OTBoA, TiTL and Breaking All Illusions. Some sound a bit whiny but that's understandable given the situation - both personal and career.

Did I mention Take Away My Pain is great from FII and that I truly respect what these guys do?

Hell's Kitchen!!, Hollow Years, Anna Lee and let's not forget Raise the Knife that is a B side song ? I mean, come on, how many artists can even write songs of this quality ?! Every single DT album has a unique sound and kinda flavor to it. You just have to embrace their mindset. :)

I think ADToE is a rare gem and will end up among many fan favorites as it grows on us over the years.

I think MP brought more to the band than killer drum skills, regardless of the personal drama I don't know about, the decisions he made prior to leaving, and some ideas and contributions that maybe the other band members didn't like. I think he was the yin to JP's yang while the other band members contributed in more subtle ways. I personally wouldn't think any less of the band if Mangini played his part during this tour, said his goodbyes, and the band made amends with MP - there's only one DT!
