Great to hear this again. So much good music I have forgotten in my pursuit to hear everything. Yes i was 18 in 69 and music is still full of surprises.
I lost this group from very long time, thanks to youtube I found and i am happy to get my memory of the'70 back. No doubt , of course, the'70 the best music of all momnet!!!!
im only 22 but can definitely appreciate raja ram all day. haha. sweet track. i saw shpongle in SF quite recently! i too was blown farther than ever before by raja rams sheer performance!!!
WERE YOU YOUNG IN EARLY 70’S UK? Back then I bought a compendium LP- a mix of perhaps UK artists. The only name I remember on it was Quintessence, but the track I fell in love with was LOST MY STEERING WHEEL. A male singer with a deep, oh so sad voice. I have looked up the song, but none of the versions I found come close to the heartrending soulful rendition that I remember on this mix LP! Help, does anyone happen to know who I am looking for??
Are some of these guys originals from haight ashbury? That came up with the decision 40+ years ago, that it was time to leave America and decided to move to India? To me them fuckers were way ahead of their time..Unless it was already well known? I don't think it was that touristy back then other than rich people.!hA ''Wait ,are they even from India? LOL! ''I'LL bet by the mid 70s they thought about leaving India for Amsterdam.!aH ''I think pot is a boring high,''Hash might be a little better.
DEFINITELY the most underrated band of all time. Shiva's voice is world class. Alan's guitar playing is second to none. I got into these guys about four years ago. Wish I could've experienced those "happenings"
Was so BLOWN AWAY by flute playing,I didn't get bak2planet Earth4almost a year. Trying to hold on2 my job as a stenographer, I one-day tried2 xplain2 my boss why I wasn't "there"(attentive).Sharing my new "UNDERSTANDING"/perceptions w/him as to my activity with LSD, he promptly fired me my ass. I kudn't LEGALLY complain2anyone!!
B careful! Hav a gud trip w/gud friends.Mine were useless;I kno beter now ;)
It's good to see plenty of Quintessence vids on YouTube now. They've always been one of my fave bands. Unfortunately I never got to see them live (I went to the Reading Festival around 1974 but they were not allowed on stage because another band took up all their time!). I had a wonderful afternoon at Allan's flat though.
Man I wasn't even born when they recorded this. I first heard Raja Ram playing the flute on a Shpongle track a few years ago.
I can immediately recognize it's him playing the flute - Shpongle tracks like "Exhalation" are still very much alike.
If you never heard of Shpongle but like Raja Ram, then you gotta listen to "Behind Closed Eyelids" by Shpongle. You won't regret it. Raja Ram and Simon Posfords are the gods of Psy. Seriously, they can't be human!
reformed not sure all original line up Raja Ram may not be with them at Sonic rock @ the solstice. I've got 2nd album saw them @ glastonbury '71. Me turned 57 couple days ago
Just forgotten how wonderful they sounded - they came to Wolverhampton circa 1970 or 1971 and as there was so few people in the audience we all sat on the stage with them - what a night!
Raja Ram (the flute player from Quintessence) has been one of 2 people involved in a fantastic project called Shpongle the last few years. Look for their song "Divine Moments of Truth" or "Behind Closed Eyes." The space is still out there!
Raja Ram is flute GOD

What a great band. Their gigs were fantastic - those joss sticks, the audience involvement. The only band that stuck true to their 'hippy' values.
