I disagree with alot of what you have all said. If any instrument or aspect of a band is off, it is displeasurable. To what extent this displeasure is, depends on how off the aspect is. On key vocals is definitely preferable. I have seen Mastodon live and they definitely did not seem as off as on this video. Bad night perhaps?

Not every song has vocals, and not every band sings completely on key... especially in metal. Metal requires really loud and powerful singing if you're performing live, which I'm assuming tires any singer who does extensive touring. It's different in the studio than it is on the road. It's not optional, but singing off key when you're also playing an instrument is completely forgiveable, ESPECIALLY if you're playing an instrument in Mastodon.
