Good bands have always existed and are always being discovered, but not on a large scale like they used to be... the reason the music industry is dishing out crap right now is because it's easy to record and sell. It will get better, though. The music industry is adapting to the Internet. If not, look up any "greatest albums, bands, etc" sites. Seek and ye shall find. :)

Nirvana had a massive impact on the media and the types of bands record labels decided to promote for 5-6 years - and in that sense no band had probably had as wider reaching impact, but it could easily be argued that in a musical sense there's been better.

to whoever asked if dave wouldve started another band if kurt didnt commit suicide:
dave was always writing music but it was never really used because it "didnt fit their style" and in 1994 he made a mixtape for a girlfriend or friend (I forget) and she thought it was really good and more and more of daves friends asked for a copy. so yeah I think he wouldve left nirvana eventually to start his own thing, dave is an amazing musician and a phenomenal frontman.
