  • What does Chocolate contest mean, apparently Vanilla means entirely made with Lunar Magic

  • @NojalSSBB From what I understand, Vanilla means not really changing anything and just using sprites and objects...basically your average hack. I believe Chocolate means you go all-out with it, creative level design, custom spriting, and just overall effort.

  • @DigitalxGamer Vanilla means using only the assets from the original game, and Chocolate means adding in or changing assets

  • @Vivendium44 Oh, okay then. Thanks for clearing that up. =}

  • I don't think this is #24.

    I want this hack.

    Wow.

  • yay for FF9 music in the second overworld map! maybe first, too. wasn't paying attention at that point. =p

  • The second theme in the intro was from Secret of Mana. "The Dark Star" is the name of the song.

  • and yes, i'm Electron. God Damnit.

  • i have offended god and mankind because i made that level.

  • You've just insulted half my family

  • Comment removed

  • "With neither sides unable to gain..."

So much for the grammar/spelling getting progressively better.

  • wow... the first music in the intro was from Touhou, if i remmember right it should be the Imperashable Night main Theme.

i don´t know the second one, through.

  • This is MUUUUCH better thn number 22

how the hell did 22 rank higher than this or multi jump mario?

  • is this based off the amazingly amazing legend of dragoon? the save spots, the graveyard (seles after attack), puzzles like most other games

  • Woah... that is awesome!

  • are you sure thats not the sound of an ostrage? I have been living a lie =;(

  • healthbar, thats a first for mario romhacks, that i'v seen anyways.

  • im a noob :P

  • Hmmm, this hack seems like it was supposed to be more of a "full" hack. At least that's how I see it. Like, he put so much effort into the story and overworld design... but only came to 1 level. Unless that was the idea... But that would be kinda overdoing it since they only judge 1 level and nothing else, lol!

  • Final Fantasy IX music. :D

  • wat song is played at the cemetary

  • The music sounds to me like Castle Pandemonium from FF II

  • It is, I put the music in for a team hack that both Electron and I used as a base for our entries.

as for a few of the oddities Raocow, some will make sense when you play my level entry (Phantasm's Tower). Others (such as the pointless levels afterwards) were put in for testing purposes, and have yet to be removed.

  • Yeah, for all the fluff surrounding it the level itself was very basic and boring. I'm not really a fan of story-based hacks to begin with, though.

  • This is obviously part of a bigger hack. Maybe that is what held it back from a higher score.

    Pretty sweet though

  • This was a level contest, based on that alone the level that was played was very basic and vanilla. The other hacks should be ignored unless they contribute to the level design.

  • Yea what he said :P

even tho the stuff other than the level was great, you have to understand it was strictly a LEVEL contest, they only judge the level not anything else, otherwise it would be a HACK contest. This is why it got 24th place, the level design was decent, but the story wasnt incorporated into the level itself, and rather into the hack (hint).

  • its built more lik an RPG so the coins will probably be used to buy items

  • Oh shit.

    ... Oh shit.

    This is fucking awesome.

  • WAIT.

    WAIT.

This is in TWENTY FOURTH place?

    ...What's in first place?

    The reconstituted body of Christ?

  • Nah, that's in about... tenth?

  • Great comment

  • My friend's hack. <3

  • I always found it funny that everyone worships a zombie who uses magic...

  • He feeds you fish and bread.

    He is the awesomest zombie.

  • He never gave me any fish or bread. In fact, I've never seen him give anyone fish or bread. For that matter, I nor anyone else has ever seen him.

  • Never seen him?

That just makes him an invisible Zombie.

That just adds to his awesomeness, sir, and any further denials that he is the awesomest Zombie must perforce be met with burnings, possibly preceded by horrific torture by devices that this zombie would probably not have approved of.

    You know us well.

    We are the Zombitholic Church.

  • Yes, it's sad that those who do not follow the zombies cannot just be left alone. People try to make us zombies too, it's very annoying.

  • It's not our fault we try to eat your brains, dear sir.

After all, it's just how zombies are.

  • I would like to keep my brains intact, sir and/or madaam. So I will hide them in a bucket (a special one) where no zombies can try to convert/persecute them.

  • This is probably the greatest conversation of all time!

  • It was fun while it lasted.

  • Would be cool if every coin filled one energy point back up :D

  • Really digging The Place I'll Return to Someday on the map with all the empty stages.

    I think it'sfrom FFIX?

  • Inv stands for Inventory, not Invisible.

  • I-I-I-I love this.

    Incredible.

If this is #24, I can't even EXPLAIN my eagerness for the first one.

  • I thought the graveyard overworld music was the Castle Pandemonium theme from FF2.

  • they have final fantasy 9 music

  • As you suggested, raocow, he basically just applied some common patches for HP, 3+ digit coin counter. Also the cutscene tool is a great thing. I plan on using it in SMTKO. The problem, though, is people tend to go overboard and use it way too much. And nobody's playing Mario to read a novel.

I can see why it got 24th. Not a bad use of common tools available, but the level itself was honestly pretty bland.

  • I laughed so hard when I played this hack myself. The guy actually left in his own entire game WORLD, filled almost exclusively with empty stages - there was actually a lot more than what you showed, too, raocow. xD

  • This is kind of cheating, since this was obviously intended as its own, separate hack before this contest even existed, though one that wasn't finished and probably never will be.

The ironic thing is that everything BUT the level was interesting. The level itself was as generic as can be.

  • Lol, you've seen the Cutscene tool only now first! That was great to hear your reaction. :)

  • Ostrich? Really?

  • The ASM in the hack was impressive, but the level itself felt bland. Plus, most of the ASM in the hack is very easily made/put in.

  • The sound of an Ostrich. XD

  • i thought smw2+3 was the only hack with RPG stuff on it O.o

  • its too bad this isnt a complete hack for playing

  • Touhou music in the intro, oh boy~

  • Don't you mean SoM music?

  • They like to think everything is from Touhou.

  • Wheresoever it came from, it has definite similarities to the theme commonly used as a base for intros and outros in the toehoes games.

  • What would've happened if you took quest 2/3?

  • It seems electron submitted a level from the hack he is working on.

    That might explain the intro.

  • If this is no. 24, the rest must be amazing.

  • The green shelled Koopas were acting more like red shelled ones @ 2:42. O.o

  • Wow I feel bad for yoshicookiezeus now, especially considering most everything you said was so great was in fact just xkas patches...

  • Hey if this is finished, do u think u can do a playthrough of this?

  • dude u should play an electron hack

  • Apparently Mr. Raocow never payed any attention to SMW2+3 and the VWF Tool Romi released around the same time. So yeah, you can do that. :P

  • Is that a chrono trigger savepoint in a zelda graveyard?

  • And i'm lovin the FF9 intro music on the overworld

  • This seems like it would be fun like hell to lp if it ever gets completed. It looks like since the coins don't reset after 100, they may be used in a store or something. The energy meter idea seems sweet too, but it doesn't make sense: If you start out with 99, and lose 20 points every time you get hit, that means you would die if you had 19 energy and got hit again. So it seems stupid to start out with 99.

  • you'd take the same amount of hits if you started with 100 anyway, so what's the difference?

besides, 99 was probably as high as it could go.

  • It seems he used the bonus stars for the health calculation (hence the regaining of health at completion), and as it would go to the bonus level at 100, 99 would be the max.

  • That's nice to know.

  • Metroid.

In fact, if it's like other hacks I've seen do it, energy tanks are even a possibility.

  • It would also make sense if there was a way to increase your health besides touching the midpoint. Then it sort of makes sense.

  • MISSINGNO is talking to him self again!

  • secret of mana music detected (I think)

  • It looks like he hacked the star counter into hp.

This hacking reminds me of that egypt-themed hack where mario is exploring ruins and has hit points and there are stealthy cactus which you can't tell whether or not they will kill you until you touch them.

Too bad I totally don't remember the name, but ssskinner was playing it on of her streams.

  • Buried Treasure.

I still have to finish it on mine, it's just I can't figure out the pianos X.x.

  • The reason for the text at the begining is because this was part of an actual hack. The creator just didn't feel like putting it all into another rom.

  • Mario has finally defeated Bowser, and it's now safe to turn off your computer.

  • It was alright I guess.

  • this reminds me Burried Treasure. bad burried treasure copy lol

  • maybe the other door near the one who took to lemmy takes somewhere else

  • Pandemonium castle music from FF2!

I like where these are going by the way. Looking forward to the rest.

  • I LOVE the FFIX music!

  • Perplexed by text? I've only played like 5 hacks and I've experienced this twice. Although your reaction was great.

And what a crazy-awesome overworld that was.

  • Aaah, i think i get it. Its like a demo-demo of the whole thing, and i guess the very very short lvls at the end only are there to check if the right paths open and stuff. Also i guess you start at an earlier point as there are lvl before the castle. Neat.

  • SSoHPKC is going through a game with a mod similar to this

it even has an energy tank that refills metroid style

  • if the person who made this section made a full game it would be one of the best mario hacks i would have ever seen

  • It's like a really, really advanced SMW Hacker made all the stuff except for the level which looks like it's made by someone quite now to SMW. It's really plain and boring =/

  • Does anyone know which hack was this level taken from? It might be an interesting one for a LP later (hint hint).

  • Awesome

  • WOAH!

  • that was different :)

  • Oh my gosh this is different.
