Just cause she might have taken juice doesn't make her any less of a person and she had a good spirit about her. I miss you Shelly and sorry I did not find out about your passing till now. I have been out of the body building scene for quite some time but I am back now! You will forever be in my heart.
Next to Alzheimer's, it is the most cruel of mental conditions, taking with it some of the brightest and most promising of human beings. Shelley was more than iconic - she was on her way to becoming legendary - had fought through so much and risen to such heights - when her story was cut short by depression.
What a beautifully rendered video! (sad sad sad cry cry cry)
I only knew today by the guy of the suplements store. I got home and started to research
I'm shocked about what i've read. things I never knew about her. I'm glad to see this video cause I got an image of her being sad and lonely by things I just read. but it's good to see she had a life surrounded by relatives and friends who love her. good to see images from this video of her smiling with them. that's how I want to keep her in my mind
R.I.P. Shelley and thank you for your mark upon the Earth
I met Shelley only once, back in the fall of 1990 at Oregon State University. She was giving a talk about body building and exercise at one of the residence halls. I remember her kindness, her smile and gentle spirit. I later read an article about her entitled Oregon Gold in one of the prominent body building mags. I can only say that I am saddened by her passing. Be at peace Shelley, and know that you had an impact on me.
What a beautiful human being. She must have been going through complete hell to choose to end her life, especially having lived the life that she did. My sister has a severe form of bipolar and she has never been any kind of athlete, therefore never had a reason to take steroids. It wasn't steroids. It was probably a result of her having accidentally overdosed on aspirin as a child. If it can make a person go permanently deaf, it's not inconceivable that it could cause a chemical imbalance.

I think steroids played a major role in her death.I no many people on roids & they get either very defined like she was, or bulky. Then when they are off it they look like she did in her later years, flabby. Most of the men and women I no who take them feel great when they are on them then when get off they get very depressed about their body image.I am sure she was a very nice person but I am also certain she was obbsessed about her body image.I didn't no her but I know quite a bit about roids.
I knew Shelly personally. and even though we are all intitled to our own opinions. to you byobroker i must say POPPYCOCK!!!! Iam bothered that you have thrust apoun the world your assesment of shellys life without ever even shaking her hand. your opinion is about roids, to which your intitled to have. but to blindly attach it to shelly is simpley shameful.
@byobroker Hang on there! The reason she did not look as defined in later years is because she continued to train but not like she did when she was a bodybuilder. What did her in was depression, not steroids. As far as her voice getting a bit deeper, which was not much at all, that I could say was steroids, but I am not 100% positive. She was still pretty big and her voice was quite high pitched. RIP and may you be in heaven Shelley.
Was watching an old Weider Bodybuilding DVD saw her sign, did a search and was saddened to learn of her death. I wonder if bodybuilding kept her from ending her life sooner. I wonder if age had anything to do with it. I'm broken.
A great tribute to a truly great and beatiful woman. She was an amazing inspiratation to people both in and outside the world of sports & fittness, and continues to be so to this day. It is my prayer that the medical powers that be find a cure for the bypolarism desease causes so much pain and heartach to our love ones and their families. Thanks for the tribute; Rest in peace, Shelly. God's Love is eternal.
I just saw that she died on VH1 last night. I remember seeing her in the mags and reading about her and seeing her on Gladiators. I felt so bad to hear she took her own life. I had a brother who took his own life at 18 and my mother is Bi-polar. It is so sad to struggle with mental illness. I feel so bad that she was so sad. I think this is such a nice tribute to her.
I work in an health care facility. You don't need a reason for it. Once you stop taken your meds. Voices in your head tell you to things you normally not do
I until just a few days ago did not know Shellie had died. I was a former college roommate and workout partner of hers my last yr. at WOSC. We lost contact several yrs ago. She was a great friend. this is a great video to commemorate her
I had the privilege of meeting her once at a bodybuilding show at Knotts berry farm in Southern California (91 or 92) where she was a guess poser; I bought a sign autograph from her talk to her for a few minutes. I didnt have the courage to tell her that I loved her that she is the most beautiful woman in the world, that I would do any thing for her all she had to do was to say it. I told her that I loved her performance, and I quietly walk away never to see her again in person.
I was never Blessed to know Shelley personally, but I have loved her for over 20 years. I think she is one of the most beautiful women ever; no matter how much muscle she put on she was always very feminine and pretty ! And to think she was so close to Rickreal. I would love to meet some of her friends !!!
I miss my friend Shelley. She was an amazing person. Though I've not seen her in many years, I am devastated by her loss and my heart goes out to her family. RIP Shelley. I love you.
It kills me that someone would even point the finger in the direction of steriods. She had bipolar disorder which can be very tough to live with. No one understands depression unless they themselves have to deal with it. She was strong, very strong and won many battles, this one she wasn't able to win. R.I.P Shelley you were an inspiration to many young women!
A very beautiful woman, very very tragic and sad time in this world that Shelley took her own life via suicide. I wish somebody would have been there to help her in her hard time to recoever from Bipolar which is not a bad disorder to get through!
Beautifully don4e,...thanks for sharing.Shelley's one of the greatest of all time in every aspect.she will be missed dearly.keep the memories alive,I will never forget to remember this great lady.RIP DEAR SHELLEY.
NONE because there is no link. Shelley suffered from bipolarism. Steroids play ZERO part in producing or inducing bipolarism. It is an organic disease, and mostly hereditary.
the events surrounding her death have not yet been revealed. it is rumoured she had been ill for some time before her passing, which suggests some kind of critical illness.
With heartfelt intent, my thoughts really do go out to Shelley's family & friends. 1 of the most poignant things I ever recall her saying on AG was: "Don't feel sorry for me, respect me!" And I - and others - still do.
RIP Shelley. You're memory still shines on in out hearts. God bless. x

@bonchidude
Every female pro BB has taken juice. Maybe not the huge doses that the men take, but still. Cory Everson took steroids.
Shelley had facial acne from taking juice. And who knows if juice intensified her mood swings which can be deadly for someone suffering from bipolar.
