@alexreid1983 I feel elated on reading your comments. As far as singing calibre of the two singers is concerned, Rafi Saheb himself had once said, " You listen to me, but I listen to Manna Dey". That of course does not make Mannada greater singer than Rafi Saheb, but says a lot about his singing ability. As luck would have it, Mannada became a preferred voice for charachter actors right from 'Ram Rajya' days, and could rarely sing for heroes. except for a few nos. for Raj Kapoor or Dev Sa'ab.

Is this song inappropriate for muslims? I think if they feel that way we should respect it, just the way we respect their opinion on idol worship. This is not hitting back but the song - Ae Malik Tere Bande Hum - is inappropriate for Hindus. Calling God Malik - Master - reduces us to Subjects/servants/slaves. When this song was played there was not a dry Indian Eye in the Hall. The Americans in the audience were surprised and wanted translation of the song. Few Volunteered.

The Urdu used during Bahador Shah's time was much more ornate and sounded very different from colloquial Hindustani in which this song has been composed. The song is, most definitely, a 20th century composition tailor made for Tagore's Kaboliwalah.
