I saw Gil in concert just before his death. Back then I didn't know much about his music and his political message. Only now do I understand the chance I had to share a moment with him. He always repeated "Enjoy yourself". And we did. He is one of the few artists who create something strong in its presence. How many artists will defend the people, freedom and stand against poverty, consumption society, political opression and so on.. and bring poetry to this? Thanks for all Mr Gil Scott Heron.
@mrP694 If you want something uptempo, I recommend "The Bottle" and "Home Is Where The Hatred Is". Although the subject matter is about the self-destructive effects of alcohol and drugs, these songs have a really powerful and high energy groove. For something downtempo, try "Winter In America" -- its words are poignant even today.
Finally, for something completely positive and upbeat:
"It's Your World"
is highly recommended.
I hope that gets you started. There's so much more to explore.
@mrP694 Gil also put out an album called "It's Your World" where many of the tracks were recordings of live performances. It is my favorite album of his, and 3 of the songs I just recommended are on this album. "The Bottle" and "Home Is Where The Hatred Is" were live, and I believe this album has the best versions of these 2 songs. I don't think these versions are currently on YouTube, so you're going to have to search for them elsewhere. The jazz improvisation is amazing.
I just feel in love with this fine man and his music, I have been searching for lady day and the bottle for some time now, my oldest brother use to play all types of music, and so did my parents, but no one could tell me that this was the man behind those songs, I got the names mixed up that is why, my brother has been sitting on a gold mine for all these years, and now he is going to make me a Gil Scott cd, I can't wait.
I saw Gil on a beautiful summer day two summers ago in Central Park. It was one of the most fondest days of my life. He didn't have to try to be soulful. He WAS soul! RIP Gil! Music with meaning. Thank You!
Get real . Black ' people ' were clearly much happier when they were slaves and I think we can agree that we were all much better off , black and white ?

@TheCrackfox9 Ok, obviously you're an internet troll posting garbage to upset people because it's the only moment you can escape your total impotence. Gil Scott Heron was a great man, and even though he threw insults at White people from time to time, he was telling the TRUTH about White America. It has a problem with anything that is NOT White. Sometimes, a rebel is needed to wake people up to just what is happening .... RIP, my Friend,.
My most precious memories are when we met...those times are forever etched & burned into my soul, you saved my life...it will never stop hurtin'...losing you like this thank you for your power, your love & telling me not to give up on the People --or the Planet...A TRUE PRINCE OF PEACE...Bless your sweet soul, "Uncle" Gil...
"why cant we all be a little bit like him" Well my friends, all of us who listen to his music and hold his words in our hearts, are already a little bit like him; thats the REVOLUTION; remember it wont be televised; RIP Gil
Gil Scott-Heron will be badly missed. He was one of the forerunners to the Rap genre and he did it right. He did it as well as anyone. However he encompassed jazz, blues, rock and his own style. He had such a spirit. And I miss him already. "We Almost Lost Report" was the best anti-nuke song I've ever heard. He got to see Chernobyl, then dozens of near misses, then finally Fukushma. We need more like him to spread the word of social injustice and reparation.
We are about to win that fight against nuclear power plants in Germany. ..and shut ´em down in the forseeable future. I will never forget those four concerts of yours i attended here in Germany... Your music will live on forever indeed....
I saw Gil Scott-Heron in concert at the Whiskey in Hollywood, in the early '80's. Stevie Wonder was in the audience. The Whiskey is a very small intimate venue. Wonder decided to play the drums with Heron on stage and this jam session extended well past the advertised finish time.
I will always remember this awesome music experience for the rest of my life.
A Great Loss today. He was the same age as I, yet influenced me somewhat in the 70s. He had an eloquent vision to identify and decry problems he saw with American society at large as well as problems particular to African Americans. If only more people had taken his advice to heart since he started out . . .
@writerdave87 agreed. but i think as a musician and a poet. and the message he tries to give across in his music should be respected. a different perspective i guess

I had the pleasure of seeing him in one of the park festivals in London in the 80's... a most inspirational man, musician and songwriter... You will be sorely missed by those of us who are awake!
@NewTunesNewShit Its a bit more serious than that. Fukushima is in meltdown. The cover-ups are ongoing, we will almost lose Tokyo. Gil was right on the money and so clever in the was he expressed his thoughts. "How will we ever get over, losing our minds". says it all. Peace.
My mind races straight to "a rat done bit my sister Nell ..." it'll be in my head all night, though Gil was much, much deeper than the bracing shot of ""Whitey on the Moon" would ever imply by itself. RIP, Gil.
Got to see him at the HMV Playhouse in Edinburgh to a sold out audience last year after I'm Still Here was released. He was in fine form. I'm still just coming to terms right now about his death, which I found out on Facebook just a few minutes ago. Given the state of current music trends in the US, it has ben dealt a near fatal blow today. RIP, Gil.
When I see this and realize his awesome talent, but then compare to the way he had to live, which no artist of his caliber should have to...I mean, look at him. If you'd passed by him in the street you'd have thought, dressed that way, he was just some homeless guy. You'd never see that this was inside what you were looking at. That bears some thinking about.
And this is how we treat our poets.
But god, was he one of the greatest American poets and performers ever. Rest in peace.
RIP, I loved the things you stood for, and respected the fight you always had inside of you to inspire in others. We can be better than our demons and you knew that. And you were just reaching this new generation too. -_- A sad day.
Just heard he passed away from and English girl on twitter. I feel dumb for being a black American and not knowing who he is. An I love old soul music but I just can't place him R.I.P though.
@nichobert Soon as I heard his other work "The Bottle" and "The revolution will not be televised" I realized I've heard him in my home as a child. But I never knew who the man behind the music was.
SHOUTS TO KANYE FOR RECOGNIZING THIS GREATNESS AND PASSING IT ON TO THE YOUNGINS WHO OTHERWISE WOULDN'T HAVE KNOWN ABOUT A LEGEND SUCH AS GIL SCOTT HERON
Thank you for leaving a legend Gil. Detroit is making changes. I live in Northend Detroit. Many visiting would say it's lost with half the property bulldozed or abandoned. The stage is set for change. Our city motto in Latin translates as "it will rise again from the ashes" - "We hope for better times". Your word and thoughts immortalize you.
Where are the Black People in the Anti-Nuke Movement...everyone concerned with civil rights better get real...the biggest threat to everyone's security is in their own state-two per state, 440 on the planet, 6 Meltdowns in Japan and still where is Hollywood ,huh ,where are you...Bless you GSH you are the real Prince, not ...O'.
I was working at Fermi 2 plant as a Nuclear Power Plant Operator while it was under construction. Fermi 1, an experimental liquid sodium reactor (sodium reacts viciously with water) was under our watch. And yes, a nuclear diasaster of epic proportions was barely averted and led to a change in US nuclear policy towards the less dangerous boiling water reactor, i.e. Fermi 2, Three Mile Island, Japan1,2,3, and 4. Here's to Green Energy!
HAS NEW MEANING WITH JAPAN MELT DOWN / TIME FOR SUSTAINABLE CLEAN POWER / HOW LONG IS NUC WASTE AND RADIATION WITH US? TENS OF THOUSANDS OF YEARS / GREAT GIFT FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS
I like how there is so much irony in Gil-Scott's music - we HAVE lost Detroit; it looked worse than a nuclear accident when I last visited a few years back - and, once again ironically, the revolution WAS televised.
@AllBobsAllTheTime - That's the result of mismanagement by the corporate whores in government, and soon to be what the entire country looks like if the corrupt assclowns in office aren't exposed for the lying, thieving, crooks they "ALL ARE!!"
I'll have loadsa this & funkadelic & brass contruction & eddie henderson &jocelyn brown (pre 85) ...Plus some northern lights, cool crew & atmosphere. What a night out BRING IT ALL BACK NOW PLZ
Thorium232 is a much safer nuclear process. It's a hell of a lot better than failing with renewables, polluting like fury with coal, pining uselessly on fusion or dealing with the transuranics from U235 fission. Thorium is the future. Nuclear will power your cars. I am biased as I am a physicist but "anti-nuclear" is not only ignorant it's also extremely dangerous and why I could never support the Green Party in the UK. If nuclear technology isn't developed and shared nations will use coal.
The irony is--how we eventually almost (or some say we really did lose) lost Detroit now--annihilation is almost complete--the destruction occurred by mismanagement--and yeah "how would we ever get over losing our mind--we know the only reason Detroit was lost was via the greed of the local politicians, the apathy of the feds and the disenfranchisement of the citizens.
What a lame ass audience! If I were there I would be jiggin it, I don't give a fuck! Gil's the shit, he really is

RIP, Gil.
ravingscholar 8 months ago

I like how there is so much irony in Gil-Scott's music - we HAVE lost Detroit; it looked worse than a nuclear accident when I last visited a few years back - and, once again ironically, the revolution WAS televised.
