  • What a lame ass audience! If I were there I would be jiggin it, I don't give a fuck! Gil's the shit, he really is

  • Dope!

  • DX7 YOU KNOW !

  • I come here almost every day to see and to listen to Gil. I got addicted to his music and words.

  • I couldn't hear Mr. Heron say who was on the drums. Anybody know who was playing them?

  • Everytime I come here this song have the same great power.

  • Read the book by John Fuller...

    We Almost Lost Detroit.

  • I was in Takoma Park and asked......

  • I saw Gil in concert just before his death. Back then I didn't know much about his music and his political message. Only now do I understand the chance I had to share a moment with him. He always repeated "Enjoy yourself". And we did. He is one of the few artists who create something strong in its presence. How many artists will defend the people, freedom and stand against poverty, consumption society, political opression and so on.. and bring poetry to this? Thanks for all Mr Gil Scott Heron.

  • Hey, sad to say it, but I'm the new Gil Scott-Heron listener. What songs would you recommend to me?

  • @mrP694 If you want something uptempo, I recommend "The Bottle" and "Home Is Where The Hatred Is". Although the subject matter is about the self-destructive effects of alcohol and drugs, these songs have a really powerful and high energy groove. For something downtempo, try "Winter In America" -- its words are poignant even today.

Finally, for something completely positive and upbeat:

    "It's Your World"

    is highly recommended.

I hope that gets you started. There's so much more to explore.

  • @mrP694 Gil also put out an album called "It's Your World" where many of the tracks were recordings of live performances. It is my favorite album of his, and 3 of the songs I just recommended are on this album. "The Bottle" and "Home Is Where The Hatred Is" were live, and I believe this album has the best versions of these 2 songs. I don't think these versions are currently on YouTube, so you're going to have to search for them elsewhere. The jazz improvisation is amazing.

  • I just feel in love with this fine man and his music, I have been searching for lady day and the bottle for some time now, my oldest brother use to play all types of music, and so did my parents, but no one could tell me that this was the man behind those songs, I got the names mixed up that is why, my brother has been sitting on a gold mine for all these years, and now he is going to make me a Gil Scott cd, I can't wait.

  • The man spoke truth with poetry all his life. Greatness never dies.

  • I saw Gil on a beautiful summer day two summers ago in Central Park. It was one of the most fondest days of my life. He didn't have to try to be soulful. He WAS soul! RIP Gil! Music with meaning. Thank You!

  • Awesome! Backing vocal, sax, we gotta work for peace!

  • my man one love

  • @silkcafe, what a lucky moment. that sounds divine.

  • This Brother is so due everyones respect,He is the TRUTH PLAIN AND SIMPLE,R.I.P BROTHER GIL SCOTT

    Peace.

  • wunderschön, man fühlt sich wie ,like in the sky- ich hoffe er bleibt , nicht nur für mich, - noch sehr langer , da!

  • RIP Gil.. Thanks for the memories.. Been digging you since 71 ....

  • I was at Tuskegee Institute in 1975/76 and saw Gil Scott in concert. It was a truly moving experience becasue after that I was sold on him, his music and his message. His unique and unparalleled voice and words makes him truly irreplacable. Thanks for the memories Mr. Scott-H

    eron.

  • Extraordinary musicians, amazing poet. RIP brother man.

  • Man. Rest in Power to this dude

  • Anyone who would be so shallow and crass as to be that concerned with what this musical profit, genius looks like apparently doesn't get it, is ignorant, and should fall off a building and take their bigoted stupidity with them. RIP brother Gil! Your messages will live on in those with a brain. We are not responsible for the others.

  • Una de mis canciones preferidas. The best.

  • what the hell - the next recommendation after playing this GSH is Britney Spears "Hold It Against Me"... ????!!! I hold it against YOU, Youtube, and anything Vevo.

  • Really crack, piss off. This guys gone that's important.

  • RIP. It seems that the revolution will not be televised in Japan, too.

  • RIP!

  • RIP, Brother

  • he's got class.

  • @AnabelleAriane

looks like a tramp to me, lol.

  • @ignorantpom if for you "class" is about the outfit, then yes, he looks like a tramp. But that's not what I meant by my comment. He's got a special charisma, a way to look at the audience, to carry himself that's classy IMO

  • R.I.P Gil Brotherman

  • I just fell in love with this man recently and he became my inspiration to spoken word. He's gone, but for me, he isn't.

  • @TheCrackfox9 May God have mercy on your soul, and grant you the peace in death that seems to have avoided you in life... R.I.P. Gil Scott-Heron

  • god they over played this track,, the 80's didnt do much for anything except perfecting the art of crushing a decent vide. Intro rocked and then these yahoos systematically took apart brother Gil's insane setup.. on a dx7 no less..

  • RIP Brother Gil. We all love you. Always.

  • R.I.P.

  • this is what it's all about, The Music'.... Rest In Peace, you did your duty for this country...

  • @TheCrackfox9 Love and peace to you.

  • @TheCrackfox9 Ok, obviously you're an internet troll posting garbage to upset people because it's the only moment you can escape your total impotence. But as a "white" person in the U.S. I will just jam up to you a little bit of reality: A. Fukushima flat-out validates this prescient song. Reasonable minds cannot differ. B. Were it not for what you call "spades," "spearchucker" etc, the American culture would not exist at all. So, to borrow a useful British expression, piss off.

  • @TheCrackfox9 You just don't care how stupid you look in the eyes of others huh? Just "Balls to the wall and fuck the world".....* that * was sarcasm BTW fucktard. Congrats! Your parents and imbred siblings must be proud :)

  • Gutted.

  • Gil Scott Heron R.I.P.

  • Gil Scott Heron was a great man, and even though he threw insults at White people from time to time, he was telling the TRUTH about White America. It has a problem with anything that is NOT White. Sometimes, a rebel is needed to wake people up to just what is happening .... RIP, my Friend,.

  • This was one great Talent, with all his faults,"let he who is without sin cast the first stone" R.I.P. MY BROTHER

  • Repose en paix

  • brother gil. rest in peace

  • My most precious memories are when we met...those times are forever etched & burned into my soul, you saved my life...it will never stop hurtin'...losing you like this thank you for your power, your love & telling me not to give up on the People --or the Planet...A TRUE PRINCE OF PEACE...Bless your sweet soul, "Uncle" Gil...

  • "why cant we all be a little bit like him" Well my friends, all of us who listen to his music and hold his words in our hearts, are already a little bit like him; thats the REVOLUTION; remember it wont be televised; RIP Gil

  • May The True and Living YAHWEH, bless the bold and brilliant soul of

    Mr. Gil Scott-Heron!

  • RIP GSH. Were still trying to save Detroit!

  • Gil Scott-Heron will be badly missed. He was one of the forerunners to the Rap genre and he did it right. He did it as well as anyone. However he encompassed jazz, blues, rock and his own style. He had such a spirit. And I miss him already. "We Almost Lost Report" was the best anti-nuke song I've ever heard. He got to see Chernobyl, then dozens of near misses, then finally Fukushma. We need more like him to spread the word of social injustice and reparation.

  • @russlowes I don't know how the title got messed up (must of hit the wrong keys!) "We Almost Lost Detroit" is the correct title. --RussLowes

  • R.I.P Gil Scott Heron! Your music and words will live on.

  • I would rather have lost detroit than Gil Scott Heron...R.I.P

  • Why can´t we all be a little bit, like him?

Will live forever in our hearts, minds, and souls...

    R.I.P. Gil Scott.

  • R.I.P Gil Scott-Heron

  • greatest anti nuke song Ever ! goodbye, my brother...

  • Kanye sample part of this song for Common's The People song. RIP brotha!!!

  • We are about to win that fight against nuclear power plants in Germany. ..and shut ´em down in the forseeable future. I will never forget those four concerts of yours i attended here in Germany... Your music will live on forever indeed....

  • Rest in Peace Bro. U music will live forever

  • thanks so much for posting this

  • Amen to onelandi's comment.

  • Thanks God for the time Gil had on this earth to educate us through his golden voice.

RIP brother you will be missed, but always remebered.

  • RIP - Smoke a big one

  • I LIKE THIS! RIP Mr. Gil Scott Heron Great Musicians !

  • "Somebody out there gotta go to work! " Get Active!

  • I saw Gil Scott-Heron in concert at the Whiskey in Hollywood, in the early '80's. Stevie Wonder was in the audience. The Whiskey is a very small intimate venue. Wonder decided to play the drums with Heron on stage and this jam session extended well past the advertised finish time.

I will always remember this awesome music experience for the rest of my life.

    RIP, Mr. Gil Scott-Heron.

  • @SilkCafeAuLait lucky you I wish I lived that...

  • A Great Loss today. He was the same age as I, yet influenced me somewhat in the 70s. He had an eloquent vision to identify and decry problems he saw with American society at large as well as problems particular to African Americans. If only more people had taken his advice to heart since he started out . . .

  • Enlighten heaven Gil, RIP

  • RIp indeed... a great man and musician....

  • Let's keep him alive...

  • RIP Gil Scott-Heron ...I'm so glad I got to see you in November.

  • What caused his death? RIP

  • the 9 people who disliked this, have got no respect, sorry.

  • @cemgs It's been up for five years... some people have been listening to Gil for longer than the past 24 hours.

  • @writerdave87 i dont understand your point of your remark.. to my comment.? there is no connection at all.

  • @cemgs I meant the people who disliked this video probably did it a while before he died. His music wasn't for everyone.

  • @writerdave87 agreed. but i think as a musician and a poet. and the message he tries to give across in his music should be respected. a different perspective i guess

  • RIP, may you rest in peace

  • A Crying Shame, Another Great Makes Their Transition

All the best to you Gil as you have made your transition to join the ancestors in the eternal spiritual realm.

And to your family & love ones, may your spirit continue to provide them with guidance & protection.

  • Tears are falling

  • We'll carry it on, man.

  • RIP

  • This man was a Hero to me. He spoke truth to power and made music that changed the way so many of us viewed the world. I owe him much of my political mindset including my NEED to speak out against injustice. You will be missed, but your music will continue to inspire. RIP GSH.

  • I was at this concert, I cannot believe it was 21 years ago! He was a great singer/musician/rapper and an inspiration to the world :-) A sad loss to all who wish for equality & peace in this world :-( Just Keep playing his records/cds/dvds to keep this man alive :-) RIP Gil :-(

  • r.i.p. Mr. Scott...nva forget.. ur jammin' concert when i wz 18!..

  • GIL SCOTT HERON DIED IN MAY 2011 R.I.P.

  • I'll never forget when this happened; and Gil was in the D with us and Honey. it was a very deep time. Gil Will Never Die - just keep hitting Play and Keep the Truth Alive. Keep Hitting Play and Spreading His Truth. Gil Scott Heron Forever

  • I had the pleasure of seeing him in one of the park festivals in London in the 80's... a most inspirational man, musician and songwriter... You will be sorely missed by those of us who are awake!

    All Hail Discordia!

  • R.I.P. Gil Scott-Heron. Brother! I when the future wanted to make it ..you and the collaboration... It was my one of the dreams.

    We Almost Lost Fukushima

  • @NewTunesNewShit Its a bit more serious than that. Fukushima is in meltdown. The cover-ups are ongoing, we will almost lose Tokyo. Gil was right on the money and so clever in the was he expressed his thoughts. "How will we ever get over, losing our minds". says it all. Peace.

  • @NewTunesNewShit we still might it's still burning

  • ::((

  • My mind races straight to "a rat done bit my sister Nell ..." it'll be in my head all night, though Gil was much, much deeper than the bracing shot of ""Whitey on the Moon" would ever imply by itself. RIP, Gil.

  • R.I.P. To A Legend

  • Pure Genius.

  • Got to see him at the HMV Playhouse in Edinburgh to a sold out audience last year after I'm Still Here was released. He was in fine form. I'm still just coming to terms right now about his death, which I found out on Facebook just a few minutes ago. Given the state of current music trends in the US, it has ben dealt a near fatal blow today. RIP, Gil.

  • When I see this and realize his awesome talent, but then compare to the way he had to live, which no artist of his caliber should have to...I mean, look at him. If you'd passed by him in the street you'd have thought, dressed that way, he was just some homeless guy. You'd never see that this was inside what you were looking at. That bears some thinking about.

And this is how we treat our poets.

But god, was he one of the greatest American poets and performers ever. Rest in peace.

  • R.I.P

  • :) Much Love!

  • RIP, I loved the things you stood for, and respected the fight you always had inside of you to inspire in others. We can be better than our demons and you knew that. And you were just reaching this new generation too. -_- A sad day.

  • Just heard he passed away from and English girl on twitter. I feel dumb for being a black American and not knowing who he is. An I love old soul music but I just can't place him R.I.P though.

  • @BrooklyntoBrixton that's all right, fam- his music and his words live on, and you can still hear them, and believe them. All the best!

  • @BrooklyntoBrixton Just keep listening now.

  • @nichobert Soon as I heard his other work "The Bottle" and "The revolution will not be televised" I realized I've heard him in my home as a child. But I never knew who the man behind the music was.

  • RiP Mr Gil Scott Heron, LOve you

  • RIP Mr. Heron .... thank you for "No Nukes" and all your work

  • SHOUTS TO KANYE FOR RECOGNIZING THIS GREATNESS AND PASSING IT ON TO THE YOUNGINS WHO OTHERWISE WOULDN'T HAVE KNOWN ABOUT A LEGEND SUCH AS GIL SCOTT HERON

  • Nuclear is still safer than coal, RIP Mr Heron

  • @TheZappawizard ummmm, i don't remember the last time a coal plant blew up and irradiated millions of people for decades...

  • i'm in bits over this. we lost one of the good guys tonight - a guy who called it like it was. a poet and a revolutionary.

  • RIP Gil Scott Heron. Absolute hero.

  • Thank you for leaving a legend Gil. Detroit is making changes. I live in Northend Detroit. Many visiting would say it's lost with half the property bulldozed or abandoned. The stage is set for change. Our city motto in Latin translates as "it will rise again from the ashes" - "We hope for better times". Your word and thoughts immortalize you.

  • R.I.P.

  • sorry to see you go

  • Where are the Black People in the Anti-Nuke Movement...everyone concerned with civil rights better get real...the biggest threat to everyone's security is in their own state-two per state, 440 on the planet, 6 Meltdowns in Japan and still where is Hollywood ,huh ,where are you...Bless you GSH you are the real Prince, not ...O'.

  • Gotta catch this man live in concert somewhere in the US. Hope he tours here sometime soon. Great, deep and insightful music. Touches the soul.

  • YES!!!!! I LOVE YOU GIL!!!!!!!

  • Let"s get to working on this peace.

  • ホームレスのおじさんに見える(笑)けど、Almostでなくrealとなった今となっては、ただただ涙。Just crying for Fukushima crisis.not almost just real. We regret we might stop it.

  • LOL what is that instrument? 2:25 ha

  • I was working at Fermi 2 plant as a Nuclear Power Plant Operator while it was under construction. Fermi 1, an experimental liquid sodium reactor (sodium reacts viciously with water) was under our watch. And yes, a nuclear diasaster of epic proportions was barely averted and led to a change in US nuclear policy towards the less dangerous boiling water reactor, i.e. Fermi 2, Three Mile Island, Japan1,2,3, and 4. Here's to Green Energy!

  • We almost lost Detroit but we did lose JAPAN.

In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior I pray for the people of Japan.

  • I thought one did hit. Swear I saw a whole entire residential street abandoned

(stay on youtube and look up videos of Detroit, a dying city, You will be shocked)

  • HAS NEW MEANING WITH JAPAN MELT DOWN / TIME FOR SUSTAINABLE CLEAN POWER / HOW LONG IS NUC WASTE AND RADIATION WITH US? TENS OF THOUSANDS OF YEARS / GREAT GIFT FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

  • I like how there is so much irony in Gil-Scott's music - we HAVE lost Detroit; it looked worse than a nuclear accident when I last visited a few years back - and, once again ironically, the revolution WAS televised.

  • @AllBobsAllTheTime - That's the result of mismanagement by the corporate whores in government, and soon to be what the entire country looks like if the corrupt assclowns in office aren't exposed for the lying, thieving, crooks they "ALL ARE!!"

  • John Henry Loves this stuff FOREVER!!!

  • so fucking good

  • i love this dude!!!

  • I DISCOVERED GSH WHEN I WAS ACTIVE IN THE 1970'S ANTINUCLEAR MOVEMENT. HE DOES HAVE A NEW ALBUM OUT; CHECK IT OUT. PEACE.

  • Very inspiring, thank you Gil Scott.

  • @H3RNON

You just dragged your own name through the dirt.

If you're going to insult, have some class about it.

  • How will we ever get over...losing our minds

  • @H3RNON shouldn't you be pissed @ your parents?! Damn go to the courthouse and have it changed. Jimmy Buffet maybe.

  • @H3RNON

    but Hernon is not Heron

so just chill and listen to this Great piece of Music

  • @H3RNON , dude your name sake is a great man

  • @H3RNON

  • Thorium232 is a much safer nuclear process. It's a hell of a lot better than failing with renewables, polluting like fury with coal, pining uselessly on fusion or dealing with the transuranics from U235 fission. Thorium is the future. Nuclear will power your cars. I am biased as I am a physicist but "anti-nuclear" is not only ignorant it's also extremely dangerous and why I could never support the Green Party in the UK. If nuclear technology isn't developed and shared nations will use coal.

  • Comment removed

  • @MrTeaB Thoruim? Get serious. And I suppose that thorium will also be "too cheap to meter" too, huh? LOL!

  • The irony is--how we eventually almost (or some say we really did lose) lost Detroit now--annihilation is almost complete--the destruction occurred by mismanagement--and yeah "how would we ever get over losing our mind--we know the only reason Detroit was lost was via the greed of the local politicians, the apathy of the feds and the disenfranchisement of the citizens.

  • it's only ok for black people to be hippies

  • @Sovnarkom moronic comment

  • Gil Scott-Heron is a living legend of enormous talent solidly embedded in truth!

I am so grateful to know him personally that myspace page enshrines Him!

  • There is a difference between electricity and nuclear power Mr Nihilistimp, now who is the dumb ass?

  • This is such good music, thanks for posting this!!

  • NEW ORLEANS IS DOWN WITH GIL

  • One of my favorites...
