Lester is schooling McNulty because Jimmy buries himself in police work because he has gone through a divorce and has kids that he can't see on a regular basis. Jimmy thinks that everything will work out and he will find himself if he just works all the time as many people do in life. He is explaining that that is not going to define him in the end no matter how good of a cop he is.

I never understood what he meant by this. Maybe it was just meant for Jimmy McNulty.............telling him "moments that never come" referring to his riding in on a white horse and bringing in the case........any maybe this goes for anyone who feels their job will save them from the worries and troubles of life.
