  • Ah so...sweet man. A+++++

  • Good soft gentle song for a violent era, made us forget for awhile.

  • John Sebastian, true artist of the time of what were the modern day poets. It was a time of peace after wars but also living through Vietnam. Being 62 and thankfully never had to fight for THIS country? not mine anymore , just pleased to have lived in peace relatively. Reading the cynics views plus the bad language makes me wonder if those soldiers died for nothing. You people that appreciate give the world some hope, bless you.

  • got the lp ''do you believe in magic''. great tune from this lp .

  • I love sweet song!

  • Time to dig out The Lovin' Spoonful CDs - Magic!

(But I think I prefer The Critters version! - how goofy is that?!)

  • Feel the sweetness and the longing inside too, but I'm happy to be here today listening to it once more.

Thanks for the Lovin' Spoonful for having brought such sweetness and love into our lives. There are days when this song still echoes inside me and makes me feel happy to have been there, in the sixties. Those were great days, when our eyes spoke as much as our lips and we were happy inside, without even knowing it.

  • i know he wrote it and its great....but i always liked the critters version much better...it just has a better 'feel' to it......a better arrangement and production....but sebastian has a better voice

  • The drugs "couldn't kill you"? Tell that to Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin.

  • Very Nice song!

  • I saw them..April of '66...in the Village....on senior hs trip..from Dayton, Ohio..i turned 18..on that trip....celebrated..in the Village.. :/

  • Im only fifteen and i would do anything to go to the sixties. even for a day. i love the music, the drugs couldnt kill you, and all the cars were perfect. not like today. today is just terrible....

  • @DanielWadePhillips

Yes, I am from that era... I saw Beatles at Shea Stadium, the Stones at the Forest Hills Tennis Stadium, Jimi at the Scene club and later hung out in his limo at the Miami Int. Rock Fest. in May 68...and so many more....I didn't get to Woodstock but I tried..got stuck on the NY state thruway...Name them i saw them, inc. Loving Spoonful at the Night Owl and in Central Park...it WAS an historic time....I wouldn't trade my teen experiences for anything, 'cept a trip to Mars..

  • @japonaliya i envy you ,JIMI , man that is real COOL .

  • 2 dislikers are elderly women.

  • what an awesome songwriter John is....brilliant:=):=)!!

  • the critters had the better version...

  • They should hold a reunion concert

  • i agree with you bob,the 60's was the best era to be a teenager, cant call a lot of todays noise music

  • The other group who did Younger Girl was the Critters

  • When this song came out, there were two versions on the AM radio- the Lovin Spoonful's and some other band's- this was the softer of the two, and the one that remains today- I bought the other 45 for my sister on her birthday, but can't recall the band-

    anyone remember this?

  • @harponercam The other band was THE CRITTERS.

  • I am so glad I got to be a teenager in the 60's and grow up with this wonderful era of music. It will never come around again. God Bless The Lovin' Spoonful!

  • @bobreavis1 LUCKY

  • Can't believe this song got 2 dislikes

It is a magic song .A reminder of happier times in this world

  • my Mom played the Lovin Spoonfull record alot when I was young then I started playing it myself

  • This song is just unforgettable !

It plays inside of me since the 60's.

  • Happy B Day to John

  • TenRecords Tell her now ! Otherwise you may miss the chance, then you will regret it. Don't waste a moment to tell anyone how you feel, that goes for everyone!

  • what a f***ing great song!!

    reminds me of too much!

    tk u

  • Well if this would not be appreciated today then most of the sixties great songs would not be.. The melody would not allow anyone of good taste to turn away. I don't think young people listening would think "hippie sixties" for too long. If anyone needs help with the lyrics e.g. "she's never been in trouble even in town" just ask.

  • Groomer music! I'm joking, I love it but...

  • Perfection

  • This song would be laughed at today and made fun of for it's simple lyrics but to us baby boomers of the 60's the song fit perfectly into a wonderful era that we were blessed to be a part of. Any person under 48 listening to this song has no barometer as to it's nostalgic value as do the boomers of the late 1940's and 1950's!

  • @trinitylancer I beg to differ... I'm only 20 years old, and even though it may not be nostalgic (since i didnt hear it when it originally came out) but I do love the lyrics and the simpleness to it. you may say "most" people under a certain age, but not just "any" or "all".

  • Sorry folks,

I just heard the version I was thinking about. It was The Critters who recorded the one I remember.

  • I seem to recall another version of this song(same group) with harmonies & a more laid back tempo. It's been awhile since I've heard it, but I'm sure it's not this one....although, this rendition is very nice. These guys had some truly very beautiful songs & they were fun to watch when they performed. Thanks for posting.

  • Great group, great music, great times! This is one of their best, along with Darling be Home Soon and You Didn`t Have to Be so Nice. Wonderful to hear it again!

  • Tenrecords ... halarious ...

  • Great band I love John and the boys! Great music

  • Oh, this is wonderful. So innocent.....so pure. Those days will never return. For those who never experienced them, enjoy. Get a sense of 60's optimism before that bubble burst forever.

  • @ghanick It's difficult to explain the real 60s to those who weren't around. This song is evocative of a particular time, midway, and to just hear it play is to be back there. It wasn't as it's portrayed on TV in sound bites and clips. Less noise and traffic helped and there was less aggression. I enjoy my life now but I had a truly wonderful time then.. Halcyon days but they can't be brought back. Best left in our minds.

  • @gnomely1 Yes, I agree. We were fortunate to have been there!

  • @gnomely1 Very nicely said, and so true....halcyon days they were.

  • @mrbigkell Thank you. I hope you're enjoying your life to the full. We were deeply fortunate to be alive then. I wish you peace and well-being.

  • This still brings a wee tear to the eye. Stunningly beautiful tune and great lyrics. Oh and such summer memories. Funny they gave it to the CRITTERS who did a lovely version and made it famous. The Spoonful did great great songs...happy and nostalgic There was a rumour that 10 CC were named after the amount an average man ejaculated. But It was The Lovin' Spoonful who were named after that. Maybe that inspired John to write "she's one of those girls who used to come in the spring'"

  • i love john sebastian's voice....

  • Great album, great song!

  • wasn't there another copy of this song before the Spoonfull?

  • @oldermusiclover Yessir, it was the Critters. That was the version that was a hit here in the Apple, John mighta written this, but they did not have a hit with it.

  • One of my favorites on the "Do you believe in magic" album. Still have it among my piles of vinyls that go unused, today. they sure bring back memories.

One of my most special women was just like this: We had glanced at one another for a while. One day she caught my eye as she passed me and her little smile let me know it was time to call her. She was a younger girl.

  • I love the Lovin' Spoonfuls songs, but I like the Critters version of this song better.

  • Great song!

  • bobby darin turned this song down then regreted it

  • Putting together a "memory list" of songs from my teens. Just added another. Ahhhh, how the years have gone by.

  • Great song. I had The Best of The Lovin Spoonful, It was a 2 record set. This song was on Record #1 Side 2 Track # 5. I bought it in 1976 on the Private Stock Label.

  • Love the song. I met Sebastian in Manny's music on 48th Street in 1967 - been a fan since the 60's. Also, spoke to him at the Woodstock Festival 1970 when the generators were down and he then played an acoustic set.

  • I think the Lovin' Spoonful should be heralded as one of the great American rock bands of all time.

  • My younger brother bought a cheap Lovin' Spoonful L.P. All four of us really took to it. Marvellous song.

  • Sebastions lyrics always blow me away.. when i was 11 years old, back in 67 i had all these songs memorized [thanks to 2 older teenage brothers.. ..like the opening line, just read it by itself...."SHES ONE OF THOSE GIRLS WHO SEEMS TO COME IN THE SPRING,ONE LOOK IN HER EYES AND YOU FORGET EVERTHING YOU HAD READY TO SAY" great poetry

  • My younger girl came in the fall.. Thirty years ago....

  • Wishing CJM sees this and remembers. FWB Florida, 1967

  • One of those 2-minute classics from the '60s that you wish was at least twice as long.

  • I love this song and your name :D

  • Yes i was senior in high school, going out with Pam and one day after school i went to Pams house and Pam wasnt home but who answers the door but her younger sister Karen,Beautiful! ..i remember going home and singing this song to myself and by the next day i was going out with Karen[she was a 10 for sure,i was the envy of all my friends. Then i cheated on her and she dumped me...and believe it or not Karen and Pams last name is Sebastion!

  • Yes, the slower version was by the Critters.

  • One look in her eyes and you forget everything. Just a different time but don't get too nostalgic, there was alot of turmoil during the mid to late 60's. Still it was a great time for music.

  • this needs to be made into a weed song....

  • @xRIKTERx That is so awesome. I had a garden at one time and grew a variety named "Little Girl". This is the most perfect song. Never thought of it till I read your post. Ha

  • I owned this album at the time. I'd forgotten all about this song. Thanks for posting.

  • Ah! So beautiful and long, long ago. I remember I was in love with 2 sisters out of 7 in a family. What pain! What scenes! And now: only smiles. Life is not that bad after all...

  • Mo- believe the version you are looking for is by The Critters.

  • I am looking for that slow and easy version of the Younger Girl. Does anyone know what I am talking about?

  • @Mozpny

  • @Mozpny yes i know what you are talking about. i am looking for it too. they play it on the radio.

  • Why doesn't someone buy all the old Shindig, Hullabaloo and Lloyd Thaxton shows? Make DVD's and let us Baby Boomers have some fun!

Also, the Groovy and Malibu U shows - if you grew up in L.A......

  • @MorganHillChristine

Someone who remembers Lloyd Thaxton!!!! What a fab idea to have these shows on DVD.

  • @Ladybug1923 - Wait a minute. I too remember Lloyd Thaxton. I was in grade school but I remember. His show did air here in upstate (Western) New York.

  • met her spring 1966...Fla. Still rolls across my mind. CJM is her.

  • 6th grade and I still remember her.

  • Ya know - I wanna put Zal on "The Guitar Treadmill" for like 6 straight months. The Guy is such a tremendous Player to this day and he doesn't play except on special occasions.

  • Zal passed away years ago partner........although remember him in spirit

  • @pkappel006 Until I opened my mail I had no idea Kappy. Of course I'll remember Zal. They're an amazing Band and The Spoonful is gonna be going strong forever. Zal was and is still one of my prime influences. The last time I saw him was when they played at their induction, I remember all the rock stars watching The Spoonful - they were huge fans too. Zal was a Natural, he worked hard for it too. I'd rather listen to The Spoonful than just about anything else.

    Genius Band!!!

  • stan2211stan.....yes, the Spoonful were one of my favorite's in the mid 60's. from time to time John Sebastian has been on PBS promoting the station and also has done specials on PBS. I have all their albums. Also, will cherish them forever.............have a good new year stan

  • I forgot I heard this song before on a staton tha my mother used to listen to or on a comertial recently.

  • great lyrics. great melody, great singer, great musicans

  • This was written by Hy Kong, a convicted child molester.

  • @BrokenneckYgor What's your reference?

  • This was the song of my first love.

  • In the summer of 1965 the Lovin' Spoonful were playing in the Cafe Bizarre on west 3rd street where the current Greenwich Village fire department is now located. My group, The Outcasts, were playing right next door, in The Village Music Hall. John Sebastian and I used to talk every day and he used to give me his used harmonicas to play with my ... Read Moreband as I was almost penniless. They later "graduated" to the Night Owl, where the debuted their first single "Do you believe in magic"

  • I believe you.

  • @Theoutcas so fantastic! nice guy your john,

  • @Theoutcas How Cool. John seems to be a real nice guy. For as simple as most of thier stuff is seems like everything is Tasty, for lack of a better word. Did You and Your Peeps ever 'graduate?'

  • @Theoutcas what is John these day's in regards to music and such???

  • Man havent heard this tune for so long good stuff..thanks song is for male cougars.lol

  • I was a senior in high school when this was popular! Very poignant for that time!

  • I Love you Jannie....

  • Younger Girl was really a song about Paula Younger who was their first groupie. The lyrics were ment to throw people off. It's true. Look it up !

  • I fell in love with Jenny Smith to this song, she never knew it was back in the 60s, perhaps I will tell her in a few years from now, I dont want to rush things.

  • @TENRECORDS go ahead and tell her now it will make you both feel groovy

  • @TENRECORDS Go for it dude! Maybe she's been waiting all of this time for you to say something.

  • Man it's too bad DesmonJones is going to be here on monday. Summer in the City.

    Thanks SPOONIE !!!!!!

  • Spoonie??? HAHAHAHAHAHA!!

    Anyway,

.. I love how they gave it such charm :)

  • I got the name Spoonie's from John's bother Mark one of the co-writers of Sumer in the City, another great hit from the Spoonie's that has stand the test of time. :)

    Cheers

    RS45

  • One of my favorite ballads by the Spoonful

or by anybody. Such a charismatic group

who made the most of their younger years. Hearing these songs are a wonderful legacy to behold. Wish I had tried harder to see them during those youner years.

  • the guy with the glasses is cute and charismatic. whats his name...?

  • John Sebastian

  • Indeed

  • John Sebastian :)

  • classic

  • nice song

  • i think the first line of the song remains the killer hook lyric even so many decades after they made this such a masterful hit; memories of mr sebastian on autoharp keep rollin cross my mind

  • One of the best of them, I think, but I was the one who liked B-sides...

  • another great song by Lovin' Spoonful...amazing!! Great band, thanks for sharing!!!

  • I love this song so much!!!

  • I don't have this on 45rpm, 33LP, cassette, 8track or CD. Locking thru my files it showed up on Reel to Reel with the same cover as above. Got it while overseas in the Navy in the late '60s. Great song, as were most of their recordings.

  • I love this song! :D

  • thank you for posting this classic

  • THIS IS THE ORIGINAL THAT THE CRITTERS RECORDED AND WENT TOP 10 IN 1967.tHOUGH NEVER A TOP 40 HIT BY THE SPOONFUL THIS IS GREAT COMPARE THE TWO THIS ON KAMA SUTRA AND THE CRITTERS ON KAPP RECORDS...MIKE

  • The Critters version never got into the Top 40 let alone the Top Ten.

  • I always liked the bass line better in The Critters' version.

  • WTF, dude. This is the Spoonful. Are you deaf?
