You could actual argue that Kaiba realises sooner, but just doesn't believe it because of how he is portrayed not believing in the supernatural.

I like to take the English Dub as an alternative take on the Japanese one, kind of like how the original animé is to the manga. As long as you don't go into it expecting a straight-up translation, and don't take it too seriously, then it's actually pretty fun to watch. I just wish that they didn't censor death so much.

I think that it's because it is a film, so they can get away with more. I actually believe that this is almost how 4Kids would have done the Dub, if they weren't as scared of parental backlash regarding things like death, violence and guns. The card images were only changed because of regulations, after all.
