Last time I drop by in Van city I understood that Gastown was prime real estate therefore if rich people live there, they will pay a lot more in taxes to live there than other places in the city therefore much more revenues in property taxes which means that more money to be invested in social housing in other parts of Vancouver. I'm still a fan even if I think you are flawed in your reasonning.
