  • Cool ..... This was the number #1 on billboard charts the week I was born.

  • Gadd.

  • I love the (awesome) drummer's reaction to Paul nearly coming in early, then the subtle smile when they connect... What playing live is all about!

That and the fact that Japanese subtitles/lyrics can go down the side of the screen.

  • 18 people are still trying the 50 ways to leave their mother....

  • was that guitar player Al from "home improvement"? 2:35

  • @XxWiZxXMoDzXx

...that's the great, Hugh McCraken. He's on more hit records than you can shake a stick at, Ha !

  • @aammirr

...the other guitarist playing rythmn is Toots Thielmans.

  • I love Paul Simon.

  • There must be 50 ways to get wasted! haha!!!

  • Is the gentleman with the brostache invited to play this song?

  • @tikitortured

    HAHAHAH!

  • My Gampa always liked this song, ..and he was getting on up there but still rolling with the punches and times! Love you Gampa, Gamma, Mama and Papa George! Kisses and huggggsss!!! And from Johnsie too, even though she does'nt know you, she will.

  • Richard Tee's Rhodes piano here - I think that's him - unmistakable sound. So smooth.

  • 50 ways to leave your lover, but only one way to play drums like Steve Gadd: be Steve Gadd

  • I still cry when I hear this song. Thank you Paul Simon! You made one of the best songs ever.

  • I believe the guitar player is Hugh McCracken.

  • My six year old brother likes to make fun of songs, he always says 50 ways to leave your mother :P

  • at 1:25 Paul notices the random sailor with a guitar that got on the stage

  • Awsome! Love this song :)

  • Everyone, seriously, look at how BLAZED paul is in this video.

  • fifty ways to love your liver. o_O

  • I didn't know Earl could sing... :P

    Tis a nice song too

  • Get the audio from this track at soundnabber doht cohm.

  • PHISH

  • @Dropshot38 shut up man phish is wack as hell

  • i love this song i listen to this very late at night and very early in the morning :)

  • Good beats and music but the lyrics are harsh....and somewhat intimidating to married couples

  • I love this and still think Rowlf's version on The Muppet Show was one of the coolest things I'd ever seen...

many, many years later I FINALLY figured out why the "you don't need to be corduroy" (my cat's name) line had always confused me...

  • @thomtrish - I definitely hear "Just the Two of Us"!

  • I like the Cudi version better.

  • 2:07

  • Is that Eric Clapton playing lead guitar?

  • Who is on Drums? He looks so familar?

  • @ultra702 it's Steve Gadd

  • @ultra702 it's Steve Gadd

  • think of one for your own name.. what rhymes with Jim... ?

  • Thumbs up if cudi brought you here!

  • Doesn't it seem that Bill Withers and Grover Washington Jr. may have been influenced by this version with the Fender Rhodes in the background in their hit, "Just the Two of Us?" But why then again, why would Withers and Washington be influenced by a seemingly obscure version of "50 ways?"

  • @thomtrish It sounds similar because it's Richard Tee on both this video, and on the studio version of "Just The Two Of Us" with his trademark Fender Rhodes w/ Small Stone phaser. He was great. That tone and his playing are unmistakable!

  • I was there. That's me, last shot as the camera pans right to left. The guy with the long hair, sheepskin coat and tweed cap. It was a really cold evening and the audience invited to this secret gig was warned to dress up warm. I'm 71 now, for God's sake, but looking forward to seeing Simon sing this one more time at the Glastonbury Festival 2011.

  • @Barresford respect my man!! but why weren't you doing the funky chicken??

  • is that a pre-head-shaven Tony Levin on bass?

  • I remember all us percussionist's practicing this drum lick in band class in 8th grade because this song was going to be part of the jazz ensemble's set list. This song and Sir Duke, by Stevie Wonder. Great early memories.

  • NOT a good hair style there paul....

  • Comment removed

  • Is that Ron Glass on drumbs?

  • GREAT SONG BECAUSE OF STEVE GADD

BUUUUUUTTTTTTTT<< who was afraid of getitin fiiirrd it they hadda told him how supid that 'stache looked!!!!!!

  • My Favorite Paul Simon Song

  • Do you remember that when the Jackson's had a variety show that they had a running skit about the "50 ways to leave your lover". Each skit showed Jackie trying to dodge his "girl" in every way possible. I.E. jumping overboard a ship. The girl in the skit was sister Latoya (playing his girlfriend.)

  • I swear that drummer looks like a white ?uestlove.

  • 2 pac sampled this

  • His drummer looks like the dude from FOTC

  • Paul really takes Movember to heart..

  • @Michaelt3474 He's taking it too far considering this was filmed in december!

  • To have Toots Thielemans play rhythm in this tune is more than a luxury. Plus having Steve Gadd set that famous signature drum rhythm is timeless. That Richard Tee Fender Rhodes (w phase shifter) sound is also all his. Not sure if that's David Spinozza or Bob Mann on the guitar solo. Paul Simon is a gem!

  • @partidoalto1

Não é o Hugh McCracken na guitarra?

  • There must be 50 ways to get a haircut.

  • I like the bit where he left his lover...

  • dj quik,Unda tha Influence album song bettr

  • one of gadd's best!

  • that mustache is precise

  • The Ron Jeremy jokes are funny, but come up with something original, like...say...this song.

  • Steve Gadd clearly the best musician there. He was about to smack Ron Jeremy off the stage when he started early at 0:04 but all it took was a glance and a smirk.

  • Comment removed

  • yeah !!!! Great Ron Jeremy

  • fantastic moustache tho lol

  • This is before he started wearing the toupeé. Have to say his askenazi roots really show here. He changed his style completely later to try to look more like a gentile.

  • This is before he started wearing the toupeé

  • it must be a real pain writing japanese, writing an essay must be like drawing a bloody masterpiece

  • stellar crowd

  • Man every time I wana be "supertramp" I can hear this song in my head.

  • search: amorphic drum

    what is this technique??

  • Gadd is the Man. One of the best drum intros of all time.....right up there with Hypnotized by Fleetwood Mac.

  • Thank you Steve Gadd :)

  • lol my high school marching band might be playing this as part of our show

  • Are you sure it's not 50 ways to love your lever?

  • I seriously watch this video once a day. one of the hippest songs ever written. and a super hip performance. i love how paul starts the song early, and the drummer gives him this really subtle look. great vibe, great groove. paul's so chill. like he knows how blazin' this tune is, and just doesn't care.

  • @painkillerpancakes I have wateched this video many times and i never woudda noticed that....GREAT CATCH

  • @painkillerpancakes Nice show, indeed. But Steve Gadd shouldn't be addressed to as just 'the drummer'. The drum-groove of Steve is the biggest reason for this song for becoming such a hit.

  • @painkillerpancakes

Yeah just replayed it and watched the drummer's sly look... he's such a sharp cat used to playing with jazz dudes and probably thinks here's this pissy little pop musician who makes more in a day than most jazz cats make in a year.

  • @Auricfield

As Steve Gadd said in interviews, playing with Paul was fun and in the groove particularly with his rhythm section. Even the late Mike Brecker did this gig yrs later w Gadd. Simon is no pissy little pop musician. He's a genius of a songwriter n singer who's voice is patented in the pop world. Gadd loved playing with Paul and it showed. Checkout One Trick Pony and you'll get what I mean. Gadd is no jazz snob. He's also a great rock/pop/funk/r&b and Latin drummer. The consumate pro.

  • @partidoalto1 An inspired sermon from the mount, cept you left out the most important thing. Paul Simon is Steve Martin's best friend forever. Check out their hilarious Silver Bells duet on youtube. Wear some Depends, cos you will pee your pants laffing.

  • @painkillerpancakes Naw, it's that puppet from Sesame Street.

  • @painkillerpancakes This song is cool enough to survive the Ice Age. Maybe it did. I think songs are the supreme time travelers.

  • @etbella3 I totally agree with that :)

  • @painkillerpancakes, the drummer is Steve Gadd.

  • @painkillerpancakes

Ha, nice catch. I watched it a second time and saw the drummer keep it together.

  • BEAST SONG!

  • It's adorable how shy and timid he seems.

  • I get tired of people saying 'without the drum part this song is mediocre'. It's simply not true. As well as the acute, funny, yet touching lyrics, this song has a beautiful chord progression and melody in the verses that with or without Steve Gadd's undeniably cool drum part,is an excellent piece of music writing. Actually the word 'mediocre' is hardly a term synonymous with anything Paul Simon does. He is a standard of excellence.

  • @jonahlevin67 well said sir

  • cudi coppied! not really but on his mix tape! hahahahah

  • Ron Jeremy was apparently impressed by Paul Simon's look during this concert.

  • @atrasz Yeah, but Steve Gadd is the splitting image of John Holmes.

  • Ever hear the parody of this song called "50 Ways to Leave Your Mother?" It's dreadful.

  • What a drummer. Without the drums this song is just mediocre but has great lyrics. No importante guapa esta no guapa esta bueno cantora si ?

  • hard.

  • kid cudi's remake. 50 ways to make a record

  • Damn I miss the good old days when Cocaine was normal 5/5

  • Gadd is a bad MF.........

  • Woo! Japanese subs! I feel so special now~ .... I may try out a Japanese cover~

    Amazing song!

  • This guy is truly amazing!

  • Is that Tony Levin on the bass here??? I know he played on the studio version of this song.

  • @frostbyteSB looks like Steve Swallow.

  • You are so right Samispade.

  • Master lyricist. And just so everyone knows, 1975 was not kind to anyone's looks. But that beat is so cool.

  • great song by RON JEREMY

  • @legoby200 PWNED!

  • @legoby200 LOL

  • @legoby200 funny shit

  • @legoby200 best comment ever!

  • @legoby200 Just Fricken funny!!!

  • the only question I have is: who is playing the invisible hammond organ?

  • @sybi0t

Phantom of the opera would be my guess :D

He left the musical scene and did session work

  • @sybi0t Lol! Yeah, I really wonder...

  • lame crowd!

  • Mr Simon's voice is still wonderful. Steve Gadd is, well, STEVE GADD!!! Terrific band all these years!

  • Not to mention that this was 34 years ago. Styles of all sorts _do_ change...

  • The drums sell this. And the jazz chords, too.

  • great stuff

  • what a song!!!

  • 0:45 imagine how much coke was flowing around back stage lmao

  • he looks like a tanned hitler

  • the drum groove (imaginatively created and effectively executed by the legendary steve gadd): classic.

  • ... she said the man in the gabardine suit was a spy...

  • my name is earl!

  • There's only one way Paul puts his band together; by using the best players.

  • Xcellent

  • Xcellent

  • LOL he looks like Ron Jeremy

  • @ghosterdude From the neck up, right?

  • @bfnputz lol probably. i wouldn't know :p

  • Paul Simon is the gold standard with lyrics. Who gives a rat's ass about his mustache back in the 70's?

  • awesome

  • omfg this song is pure awesomeness

  • @clintxoxox and btw all, mustaches were cool back then, dont knock it..its just the way it was......

  • Qué grande, cool!!!!!!!!

  • or 50 ways to spread your butter.

  • idk why but i love the drums in this song

  • @cardplayer55 because it's Steve Gadd, baby

  • @cardplayer55 You're not the only one. A classic by one of the best drummers

  • I don't get it - spends hours trimming that moustache so it has that perfect gap between it and his lip so it looks like a furry slug, hours combing his hair so it looks like a cheap nylon wig and yet cannot be bothered to list the other 44 ways - and the six he lists aren't really very original. Still, I do love the song....

  • EPIC MUSTASH!

  • yes in which way can we find 50 ways to shave his moustache?????Huh ha ha ha huh he huh

  • He says there's 50 ways but he only gives about 6. What are the rest?

"make a pass at her mum chum"

    "feel up her sister mister"

    "slap her face Chase"

    "bruise her pelvis Elvis"

"try to finger her an*s seamus"

    can you do better?

  • @73Duffster Funny!

  • call her a dyke Mike

or for that matter a lez, Les

tell her to lose weight Nate

    get yourself free

push her over a cliff, Cliff

    keep fartin in bed, Ned

    just dump the bitch, Mitch

    and get yourseeeelf free....

  • @calafsdream

    haha AWESOME!

  • @73Duffster 'tell her her ass is fat, nat'

'get fired from your job, rob'

    'give her an std, billy'

'have sex with her dog, mog'

what do you think of these? they actually got me dumped over the years. Except for the dog one, it was actually a cat but I already used nat.

  • @73Duffster

Hit her with a rock Brock

    spray her with mace Chase

    Freeze her in ice Bryce

scratch her with a rake Blake

Punch her in the belly Kelly.

  • hop on tha bus gus, u dont need to discuss mucchhhhh

    luv dis song :)

  • Singer, songwriters who tell stories in song sing like this. If you want a song with substance and meaning this is what it will sound like.

Dylan, Willie Nelson, Cash....the list goes on and on and on.

  • that man cant sing just lisen to him hes just talking :P I`m sorry but that`s just to wird :P

  • or 50 ways to brush you comb over

  • Who cares what he looks like? He is an incredibly talented singer, songwriter and musician. This was when you didn't have to be homogenized and prepackaged to be a star.
