This whole expert village thing is a embarrassment and a insult to people who really are looking for help, if you are keep looking as there are a lot of good people out there! I don't think I have ever found one good video from these guys and yet they always pop up top of the list, perhaps it's a rehabilitation thing for criminals? It would make more sense if that was the case!
You ever tried that whitening pre-rinse listerine? Well... try it for a month and the slime you endure around your gum line... yeah, that reminds me of this video..
"at that point you're just amplifiying thunder"... Man I love my 5 string every time somebody mentions somethings like that ^^ but I'm dissapointed the guy doesnt know anything about bass amplification... it's the speaker frequencies you need to check up on... a low B is 30.87hz... and a lot of speakers can't go below 35-40hz... that's where the problem lies :b
just like the graphic design expert village video, "how to get a graphic design job"...all the girl basically said was "well theres lots of kinds of graphic design...and yeah." pos asshole village.
@Nukleon69 there's something I don't understand. If I play a low B string which vibrates at 30Hz how can a 15" speaker give me a real sound if it's tuned to 35Hz???
2. this video says nothing about choosing "the right bass rig for you", it just says his opinion on speaker cab layout. this entire vid couldve been said in one sentence: "I think you should use a 4x10 cab and a 1x18 cab." done. now lets search all over youtube to find the next minute long video in this series explaining how to turn on your amp. and then the next one telling you you to plug your bass in.
something needs to be done about "expert" village.
Clarity is mostly about transient peaks accuracy. As bigger the thing is, the less definition you get, since the paper cone has more mass to it and it wil take a longer ammount of time (in miliseconds or less) to actually move back and forward to produce the sound. And you might say "I just want it for my lower strings" well, It may have good clarity on an oscillator-produced 40hz sound or so, but remember, your bass sound is full of character given by it's wood. Bigger cone = less definition.
I use this combo with a huge custom 18" cab that i ported to peak around 31 Hz. The 410 (hartke 410xl) gives a sweet tight and punchy sound, but you're kidding yourself if you think a 410 or 810 will produce anything under 55Hz appreciably. For the 80Hz and under range, an 18" sub in a good ported box and with a proper crossover gives you a monstrous sound in combo with a 410. For faster bass songs though, you can just turn the sub off to avoid thunder.
"definitely suggest you have that 18 down there for clarity and so it doesn't break up"
I don't think you understand that by increasing speaker size, the more momentum the voice coil gains while moving taking away clarity and just creating a looser low end.
I use an 18" almost all of the time and the fat lows are there. I just need a 4x10 to balance it out properly. I'm using it with a 15" and a horn EV PA cab. Not a bad sound.
Hey. I'm kinda new to bass stuff, but would it be wise to stack a 2x10 on top of a 4x10 or would it be wiser to stack a 4x10 on a 1x15? What's the difference between the two? I really would appreciate the help.
Ideally it would be best to stack 2 identical make cabs. 2 15s, 2 4x10s, etc. Stacking different cabs will give you unique tone, but EQing may prove to be problematic without a biamp/crossover. I'm done stacking...switched over to a single 600 watt Genz Benz Neox 212T cab. Sounds awesome and weighs not much more than 50lbs.
I'm fairly new to this as well, but I don't think there would be much point in stacking a 2x10 on top of a 4x10, because the cone size is the same.
The larger the cone is, the slower it can vibrate (i.e. the lower pitch it can amplify with clarity). If you stacked a 2x10 on top of a 4x10 then in theory you'd have 6 cones which are all good at amplifying the same pitch. I'd recommend getting a 4x10 and then a larger cone on top/below that.
It depends what you want. Different speaker sizes handle better frequencies better than others. The amount of speakers will pretty much just change the volume.
I would agree with wnseries7. A 410 will give you a particular frequency response, and a 115 cabinet will give you an entirely different response. Also, when comparing cab specs, it seems common that 410s have a better freq. range than 115s, including coverage of the lower frequencies. 410s can usually handle more wattage than a 115 too (again, according to factory specs). Still it's subjective; I would suggest you try out different cabinet combinations to find out what sounds best to you.
@CR3W1SH03S Yeah, that's very true, I forgot to mention that, thanks! More speaker surface area is always a plus. 410s seem to have every other configuration beat in that department.
The idea that a bigger driver is needed to reproduce lower notes is flawed. Many 4x10s can produce down to 30 hz. With new full-range cabs being produced, bass players bi-amping is becoming more rare. An Eden XLT 4x10 can produce more low-end (that's tight and articulate) than a subpar 4x10/1x18 arrangement. If you like the response of bigger drives, then go with bigger drivers. There's nothing wrong with that.
Oh no, I've become one of those annoying know-it-all people on Youtube. LOL :P
Got to have the 18! Who's going to lug the heavy ass thing to gig for me. I'm almost 60 and I've got a bad back. I'll stick with my Genz Benz Shuttle 3.0 thank you. I agree with everyone hear this guy hasn't go a clue. YouTube shouldn't even let these guys have this crap on hear.
Thanks for the comment. I have one eight in my Genz Benz and I also own a SWR Working Pro with a 12. If I'm in a rock club I have and extra cabinet . I went through that whole Peavey bi-amp 2 ten and 1 eighteen period about 20 years age. Both my amps fit in the trunck of my car. The Peavey cabinet had to go in a truck. Remember your OLD if you consider the size of your amp before the tone.
If your to old to carry the amp that gives you the best sound why bother with gigs?
If your almost 60 and still gigging why dont you get a crew guy that help you lug your rig? Even if you cant afford that just tell an average 18 year old guy youll give him 5 buck for carrying it, most guy will say yes.
@fffogy Hey how are u liking the Genz Benz shuttle 3.0? Ive been really considering getting one and then just pairing it with a 2x10 cab. any suggestions?
@fffogy Didn't you hear the man? He said Amplifying THUNDER, I bet you don't play Metal do you? I think it's a great idea to have an 18". Get some roadies or go play Bossa Nova and don't try to police this shit pops.
Ashdowns give a really Hi-Fi sound and are very clear. They are easy to mix and have a tweeter switch that you can turn on "super bright" "Normal" or "Sheen"
I have a fellow bassist friend who uses the Ashdown 4 x10 cab with a Hartke 3500 head. He gets a great sound out of that rig. Highs Mids and punch all come thru on whatever song his band is playing.
big speakers don't give you more bottom end, they just give ou a different KIND of bottom end. listen to 311 a lot of their stuff the bassist (P-nut) uses cabinets with 8 inch speakers. the guy in the vid isn't totally correct.
The guy in the vid is correct. Big speakers do give you more bottom end.
You refer to a bass player using 8" speakers, but in recording situations his sound is going to be EQ'd after it's gone through the amp anyway, and in live situations his sound is going to be EQ'd and then sent to the main PA speakers. Hence the sound you hear isn't exactly the same as what his bass amp puts out.
