I'm sure Pistone lied about a lot of things, some things aren't worth saying for a documentary, and some things you just dont' want to admit to yourself. Yeah he's probably killed people to keep up appearances, but he can never say that or he'd be charged with murder himself. Yeah, he probably knew that those guys would be whacked, but it makes him feel better to revise the history and say he didn't.

Pistone certainly did not kill people to "keep up appearances". How do we know for sure? Because had he done so, we would have heard about it. All those gangsters, for whom Pistone was supposedly "keeping up appearances" for, would have let it be known that the FBI's man murdered people. Giving up that information could only help their own cases.

First of all there are frivolous things they have to do on a daily basis, like hand their fake driver's license to bartenders and policemen in front of their targets. He claims to be the nephew of whacked capo Phil Lucky. Saggio claims on the day of the hit, he answered the phone at his Uncle Phils house. An anonymous caller told Saggio to tell Phil "don't go to the meeting tonight" before hanging up. Saggio says he recognized the voice as Bonanno associate Donnie Brasco. Prior knowledge?

For example, I read a book called 'Mafia Son' recently (brilliant book), in which the sort-of-bad-guy of the story Agent Lin DeVecchio (you may know him from the news), stood trial for corruption. In the book, all the evidence makes it pretty obvious that he was involved in numerous murders. However, Pistone went to the trial and testified on DeVecchio's behalf, saying only good things about him. I say they're both shifty characters...

@SpartanSam I'm conflicted. I agree, he seems slippery, like he hasn't come totally clean. On the other hand, maybe sometimes he just forgot. When you're all day wheeling, dealing, lying, cheating, etc. maybe it all blurs. Take Sammy Gravano, for example. In his book Underboss, he mentions the Frank Fiala hit. He neglected to mention the $5,000 he paid Mafia cop Louie Eppolito to make the case disappear, even though he told prosecutors about the payoff when he switched sides.

Unfortunately, the mobsters beat the FBI to Ruggiero and Mirra and had them killed.

I am reading his book right now and I really enjoy it, and I also enjoyed Falcone's book too. After reading their books it just seems like most italian americans aspire to be mobsters when they grow up, I noticed a little of that in NY. I know this is a bad steriotype, but the books talk about kids growing up in the mob. I hope I am wrong, and if someone can prove me wrong, I'd be happy to hear their story.
