  • Just watched the 2003 remake recently, and of course the Buffalo Bills are still the best. Such great chemistry, I always love the part where the tenor takes the bye too high.

  • I love them love them love them....

  • 1:45

How can there be any sin in sincere

Where is the good in goodbye?

    Your apprehensions confuse me dear

    Puzzle and mystify (Mystify)

Tell me what can be fair in farewell, dear

While one single star shines above

How can there be any sin in sincere?

    Aren't we sincerely in love?

    Oh, we're in love!

  • lol buffalo billis. great song.

  • Anyone notice the title of this clip is spelled wrong in the fact Bills is spelled with an extra I? Buffalo Billis

  • I saw the musical on Broadway in 2000 or 2001 I can't remember, but it was simply incredible. Our marching band took a trip to Manhattan, and we saw Les Miserables too. I fell in love with musicals that day.

  • @losifer69 I'm sorry it took that long to find a love for musicals. :) You should watch the remake of "The Producers" starring Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane. :D It's really good.

  • @beatngo710

I was only 15-16 at the time but still a long time :)

  • who are the dreadful people who disliked this awesome song :0

  • 1:45

  • the only thing i don't like about this is the fact that the tenor didn't add a seventh to that "ice cream" chord. sevenths are sexier than octaves.

  • @haircut74 especially 9ths!! mmmm lol

  • @haircut74

    Completely agree!

  • @haircut74 Oh, he could have.

  • people need to accept the fact that The Buffalo Bills will NEVER BE BEAT.

    I mean, really.

  • These guys are the best! Lida Rose is even better. I was fortunate enough to be hired as a drummer for this musical in my local theater. The 4 guys they hired were ok, but no one can compete against the original. This has always been my favorite musical.

  • I'm not old enough to have seen this when it came out in 1962, but I saw this on TV yeas ago, and my parents had the original sound track album. I have LOVED 4 part harmony ever since. These guys were some of the best! I have discovered a whole new world of music appreciation after hearing The Buffalo Bills. That's why I love Doo Wop, and any other harmonies. Thank you so much for posting as these guys are phenomenal!

  • Stunning for all generation to enjoy -B Bills perfect -thanks for that cllip from "The Music Man" 1962

  • How can there be any "sin" in "sincere"? Where is the "good" in "goodbye"?? GREAT barbershop singing from the Buffalo Bills...best EVER!!!

  • Anyone notice on the sign above Hill it says "Across the Creek From the Pest House"?

In those days the "Pest House" was where they quarantined people who were

sick with contagious diseases like Tuberculosis, Smallpox and Typhoid.

Those old diseases had been irradicated from the U.S. 50 years ago but now

with the influx of illegals they are making a comeback, further overtaxing our

    crowded hospital emergency rooms.

Perhaps its time for a return to Pest Houses for alien "PESTS".

  • Don't you wish harmony was as easy as Professor Hill says?

  • @Lassannn Harmony is 20% singing and 80% listening. If you get the knack for it then it is pretty easy.

  • The Buffalo Bills are freaking Amazing!!!!

  • Ice Cream^Ice Cream^^Ice Cream^^^Ice Cream^^^^

  • I get chills every time I hear this. Vern Reed was awesome and a unique voice on high tenor. One of my all time favorite movies!

  • @SirWinstonBeech Exactly! Just listen to these guys now gave me "goose-bumps"!! RL Atlanta, GA USA

  • gmd--THANK YOU!! I wished I had said that! I must be tone deaf, because I can not hear "it". In my very, very biased opinion, I just hear a lot of screaming to the 7th chord. There was a post of the BB's singing with Perry Como "If You Were The Only Girl In The World" just sent me into total bliss! If anyone knows how to get a video of that, let me know! Thank You Again, Garrettmillerdrums for confirming what I suspected.

  • I did this peice in my high school jazz chorus. It turned out amazing!

  • I've heard barbershoppers talk 'trash' about these guys, in that they could not even rank with the quartets that compete today. Haters! I can listen to these guys over and over, whereas...oh I'd better not say it; I'll be bombarded with the opposition!

  • @cawiseguy Seriously? You know what I hear when I hear modern quartets? Cookie cutter voices. Everyone is trained to the t and sound like everyone else. Their harmonies are tight but they just sound like notes on a keyboard. The Buffalo Bills, Golden Gate Quartet, etc have that RAW sound that makes them so special and in my opinion far superior to what we hear today. And yes, I am talking about musicians not on the top 40.

  • @cawiseguy I absolutely agree with you. Singing "tight" barbershop harmonies takes a very good ear. Unfortunately some present day competitors strive for such technical perfection and dissidence, their musicianship comes across about as thin as the photographic grain on a cheap table, while the choreography just gets in the way... My Father once said, "...there are musicians, and then there are technicians - very confuse the two...." More later... RL Atlanta, GA USA

  • @rlewis1946 Thank you very much for your comments. To me, it's about a good sound and the technical obsession just leaves me scratching my head. I know some folks reading this will assume I'm "in the trees", but I think it needs to be said. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

  • The Buffalo Bills are a great quartet and will be a challenge to mimic in our upcoming performance in Woodstock GA.

  • "You see? Singing is just sustained talking." :)

  • Oh what a tenor

  • love this, im harold in my play but i wouldnt mind to be in the quartet if anything else

  • My school is doing this musical this year, and I'm singing as Jacey (though I read for Olin). And here's the kicker: I'm a girl. HAHA :) It's quite fun, I'm the only female member of the school board and it's like a big joke :P The quartet is a great role

  • I cant watch this enough....if i wasnt marcells, i would love doing quartet

  • My school that has grades 4-9 is performing this...and we ARE NOT doing the Jr. version my school always go full out...i proudly play Ewart...but i sing Jacy's vocal part because Ewart's is to low for me :P

  • I'm ewart for my school's play too, but that confuses me cause i'm a baratione. at least I get to intro every song. "How can there be..." "Any" "Sin in sincere?". great song

  • @towerguard6 what confuses u lol?

  • ewart is the second tenor. Jacey is the first high tenor. I should be oliver who is the baritone. and we're trying to convince this one kid to be olin, the bass. so what confuses me is the fact that the music teacher made me second tenor and not baritone.

  • @towerguard6 ya thts pretty much what happened 2 me! but instead of singing ewart i sing a different vocal part- jacy tenor 1! idk y i wasnt just jacy lol!

  • I really like how it's panned in stereo, from high to low, left to right. It really makes each individual voice stand out. I've listened to this every night for the last week at our school's production of this musical (I play trombone in the pit orchestra) and I think it's the best part of the show.

  • Vern Reed (left, tenor) does a wonderful job. This song was arranged by Phil Embury, as well as Lida Rose and It's You.

  • My faaavorite movie..

  • It's remarkable, but the entire movie The Music Man is summed up in this one scene: Stubborn, skeptical townspeople are transformed by Prof. Hill. Eulalie's line is priceless - how WRONG she is!

  • Cant wait Im playing Jacey. for mainstage theatre Im extremely excited

  • I was Jaycee the tenor 1 in high school... Ashbrook Senior high I think it was 04?

  • Not one single thing disappointing in this movie. Fantastic through and through. Thanks for the great post. I just saw my third MM play last night.

  • i played the bass in a school play it was tough but i think we really pulled it off!!!! these guys are perfect

  • It was always really fun in our performances because the baritone in the quartet was a German, so I'm not used to hearing his lines being done in an American accent.

  • The quartet, from left to right, are Vern Reed (tenor), Al Shea (lead), Scotty Ward (baritone), and Bill Spangenberg (bass). The same four men appeared in the Broadway play of the same name, which ran from 1957 until 1960, for over 1,300 performances.

  • I didn't realize Harold Hill was played by the same guy in Victor/Victoria... I LOVE ROBERT PRESTON!!!

  • A classic scene and what beautiful music and voices. Fantastic!

  • Ah... The Good Ole Barbershop Sounds.. How we loved them back when....

  • This is totally awesome! The song makes sense, and the singers are excellent!

  • They were the 1950 International Quartet Champions.

  • wow that tenor is amazing!

  • lol! yeah you are right. I remember singing the first tenor part in high school an octave lower because I could not hit that note no matter how hard I tried.

  • yeah preforming this show as the tenor in 8th grade and the other three members were all seniors in high school it was so fun but we did a kick ass job.

  • i love how the tenor has to be corrected for singing too high.

  • We had that exact same problem when we did this for school.

  • Its written in...

  • Besides that one. He was always sharp.

  • The barbershop quartet is my favorite part of that musical. Too bad I'm a girl because I'd totally sing in it if I could.

  • YES!!! V9!

  • I'm the baritone in my schools quartet woot woot.

  • im the bass woooot !! lol

  • i'm the tenor ;)

  • do you by chance have "It's You"? my school's doing it and i never get a chance to hear that song...

  • It's You was never sung in the movie, but you hear a little of it as a calliope waltz at the start of this clip.

  • Performing this show in the quartet was the most fun I've ever had.

  • this is my favorite out of this show...

    ICEEE CRREEAAAMM!!....

i loved it when we did i would always be the short guy with glasses!..

    eeeee!!!...

    i love this show!!

  • I love that short guy. XD

  • one of my favorite musicals of all time!

  • "iiiiiiiiccce creeeeeeaaammm!!!"

  • Anybody else notice that Robert Preston's profile looks kind of like Dick Clark?

  • i'm jacey squires in my school play

  • I love how they speak in harmony, too.

  • OMG i've been searching everywhere 4 this!!!! thnx soooo much!!!!

  • "Singing is just SUSTAINED TALKING..."

  • @dDave512 you are truly an ignorant. person. your life is just sustained stupidity.

  • @slowuroll2000

he was quoting the clip....... this is awkward

  • I own and operate a professional dj entertainment company. Over the years Ive heard lots of remakes, re-dos, and covers. However, most agree, as Im sure most who watch this video would also, that the Buffalo Bills are still by far deliever the orginal and best version of this song. PERIOD

  • @LongIslandDJ

Agreed! I've tried looking up covers of this song on youtube and none of them sound as good as this!

  • Do you know where i can get any information on them by any chance?

  • That high tenor aka Jacey Squires aka Vern Reed - he's my father! The memories of my childhood are filled with barbershop music and The Music Man. He would be thrilled to know that this still brings joy and would be astounded but would have loved it being on the internet!

  • I love those guys. This was always my favorite part of the movie. My family always says "Make him put up a bond" Can you tell us more about him? Did he sing those songs to you?

  • wow! Thats amazaing.

This may sound a bit personal, but are any of them still alive today do you know?

  • All of the members that sang in the movie have passed. One of the original members of the quartet that chose not to relocate to NYC is still alive in Buffalo. You can still find their albums on E-bay. There is also a recent CD someone compiled that you also can find on E-bay.

  • Fascinating

Thank you very much for that insight :)

  • It is also interesting to know that "Sincere" was not part of the original musical. It was written for the movie.

  • Like oh wow.... I have played his part 3 times in the MM.. Vern was last to pass. I have sung at intl contest as a qtet and love the MM play and will do it again sometime soon I am sure. Do

you sing bshop? They had the best job and to do the movie-what a blast.. S

  • I am so impressed! How lucky you are to have been part of music history, even in this small way. Thank you so much for the learning!

  • Wow! My father met your father in 1957 when the Buffalo Bills came to Massachusetts to sing a concert. They apologized that they couldn't do anything from The Music Man, since it hadn't opened yet, but they said they were sure it would be a big hit! I've always loved the Buffalo Bills- I can't imagine what it would be like growing up with them! Thanks for the reply- your dad's legacy lives on for music lovers everywhere!

  • Don't forget, the parts of a barbershop quartet are called (from bottom to top) bass, baritone, lead, and tenor. In my opinion, no quartet has ever matched the color and blend of the Buffalo Bills. Awesome!

  • They are great...if you have some time listen to Fred-- 1999 intl champs. from GA... Friends/associates of mine and funny guys and sing great... utube fred

  • love to know more about these guys. How can I find there albums?

  • "Jacey Squires", the high tenor, is Vern Reed. Very distinctive voice. I have about four of the Buffalo Bills' albums but this is probably my favorite song of all of theirs. This is one of my all time favorite movies as well. Pure good-time fantasy... salesman (who knows nothing about music, although he knows more than he realizes) blows a pitch pipe, and the small town school board turns into what, at the time was the best barbershop quartet in the world!

  • YAY for Jacey Squires! (Tenor 1)

  • When we performed this scene it didn't sound that good becuase one of the quartet members broke his leg thrity minutes before the production. It was scary. Nine people were sitting on a ledge that held books and it broke and fell on his leg.

  • I LOVE THE TENOR 1!

  • this was my first favorite movie ever.

  • This is my favorite song in the show!It was also the hardest to learn. I was Jacey Sqiures (highest voice)

  • I want to live in a small town where they have town socials and barbershop quartets!

  • My favorite musical ever and whay first got me into the barbershop liking.

  • Ohhhhh I just love this musical, thank you so much!! Nikeboy I love you too. In a friendly kind of way. Ha!

  • someone pleeeze post "trouble," and "the sadder but wiser girl," peace.

  • ICE CREAM!

  • Words to live by.

  • thanks for posting... :-D

  • i have been looking for this song!
