  • so sad he had to go to that shitty rangers team such a great talent on the wrong team.. who are these ranger fans bragging about 1st place for the first time in over 60 years they finally have 1st and they dont know how to act typical jerk off ranger fans. don';t know shit about their team cheer for them when their doing good and then dont when their doing bad scumbag front running fans

  • He was my 2nd favorite player growing up as a Ranger fan :) The fastest skater in the history of the game.

  • He was never super flashy, just consistent year in and year out. Im a huge Ranger fan, and I'll admit, even I didn't know he was 6th on the all-time goals list. I guess when you eclipse the 30 goal mark in 17 different seasons, you are bound to be up there.

  • The Man. The Mustache. the Legend.

  • @TheDoomSquid and the CONSISTENCY---he scored 30 goals or more in every season except the lockout-shortened 1995 season, and in his final season, and scored at least 30 goals in every season from his first season until that lockout-shortened season (for 15 straight). How many other NHL players can claim that consistency? ONE...Jagr.

  • his daughter is my soccer coach at holly trinity school

  • fastest slapshot in NHL 94 for Genesis

  • who is this guy, can some school me on him

  • The man could skate....I meet him a couple times...once after a Leafs game when he was playing for Wash...and once at his parents house all could remember was the size of his legs..I was about 8 or 9.

  • As others have stated, perhaps the most underrated player of all time. I mean no one talks about him as one of the greats, yet he has the most 30+ goal seasons all time. Unbelievable consistency. Great video!

  • 2:11 i think rod langway is one of the most underrated defensemen of his time, that mean was a monster

  • Imagine Gartner in his prime playing now (without the old two line pass rule).

  • Possibly THE most underrated player in NHL history. He had an incredibly consistant career, and his shooting skills were also amazing.

  • hes my coach now, amazing guy, understands the game more then anybody around, took our team from last to a possible first place finish this year.

ps: he still the best player on my team :p

and the fastest, and im minor midget AAA

  • A few things about Mike Gartner; you'd be hard pressed to find a more respected player in the NHL during the time he played. He had the good fortune (or lack of depending on how some people view greatness) of having a career where he had no valleys but no mega-high peaks. He was a continuous 30-40 goal man with high-water mark of 50 in 84-85. 19 years in the game, & 17 with 30+ goals. But another way to KNOW he was a great guy was Keenan didn't like him. That's like not being liked by Satan.

  • @dzanier Some would say lack of good fortune - he has the most goals scored of any player who never got to touch Lord Stanley's Cup (708) - he was traded away from the Rangers the year they won the Cup.

  • I know. He was traded for Glenn Anderson, who scored 2 very big goals for us in the playoffs but was mostly ineffective. Had someone proposed that trade 7 years earlier I'd have made it, because Glenn in his prime was a better player than Mike. Gartner never complained, always played hard, spoke with the press & was very involved in the players union. There are some athletes who are role models & examples not just for their skills but for their character. Of those none ranks higher than Mike.

  • great and way underrated player!

  • Hey that's a great montage of a great player, if you dont mind and got some free time. Can you please come to watch one or two of my montages, I'm new to putting vids on youtube and need some feed back. =) thanks

  • mike is an awesome player im good friends with his son and i was lucky enough to be coached by hime for 5 years awesome guy

  • Mike Gartner gets no respect. When I think of great players when I was a kid in the mid 90s he always comes to mind. Something like 13 straight 30 goal years and he always won the fastest skater in the skills competition

    agreed!!!!

  • 15 only stoped by the lockout of 1994

  • Used to enjoy watching Gartner at Capitals games. Ah, the good old days. :)

  • I remember him from when I was younger. I went to a lot of North Stars games. He was one of the few guys who could score goals. Was always fun to watch.

  • True Star !!!! Dude Was So Skilled!!! Will Never Be Accepted As Great Because Of Gretzky!! All I Can Say Is Great Is Damn Good !!!!

  • yeah he's under rated, but he was accepted as great... the first shot was him getting in the hall of fame!

  • its funny...i used to play wit the rangers on NHL94 on sega genesis...gartner was on the rangers in that game and i always made him a starter with messier, patrick, leetch, graves, and of course, mike richter =]

  • That trade was ridiculous. Someone said the Rangers would have still won the cup with Gartner. Not only is that true but it would have been easier.

  • i agree,,but he wasnt a "keenan guy". so they shipped him off. kinda sad

  • Definetely would have been easier if Gartner was there in 1994.

  • Wow that was great!! He was like super man!! I was going to say the best player to never win a Cup but I forgot about Marcel Dionne. Like someone said. He should have held the Cup in 1994. What a great player.

I can't believe in the 60 greatest post expansion players book from the hockey news. He wasn't in there.

I want to say he was as good as Mike Bossy but that's unfair because I've never seen Bossy play.

  • 4 best players who didn't win a cup. Marcel Dionne, Brad Park, Gilbert Perreault and Mike Gartner. And even from a Ranger fan, i can assure you. Gartner was great but he's no Bossy.

  • i used to love this guy on the rangers...he should have won the cup with them in 94

  • Mike Gartner gets no respect. When I think of great players when I was a kid in the mid 90s he always comes to mind. Something like 13 straight 30 goal years and he always won the fastest skater in the skills competition

  • I am sick of hearing Mike Gartner was not a playoff player. 122 playoff games 43 goals 50 assist 93 pts not too shabby.Plus take into consideration some of the teams he played on.

  • I used to enjoy watching him play in Toronto. I remember this one time his stick got lifted and went into the stands, the fan picked it up, posed for the television camera then quickly threw it back to Gartner who caught it then scored a goal with it.

  • @hellonicetomeetyou I remember the play you are talking about with the fan giving the stick back to gartner, except you must have rememberd it wrong. it happened in the 94 playoffs(I think against Dallas). Gartners stick went into the stands and the fan held it up posing to the cameras with it, then the fan realized "oh shit my team is killing a penalty in the defensive zone i better throw it back to him!!" He threw it back to gartner just in time for gartner to clear the zone, not score a goal.

  • Sniff... i miss him so much.. COME back to the NHL Mike!

  • My all time favorite hockey player, I quit rooting for the Caps and rooted for whatever team he played for. I'm so glad the Caps are doing the right thing and retiring his number.

  • oh thanks for adding mike! i was looking for thing like this on YouTube long time...

Garntner is one of my favorites all time

  • Certainly one of the greatest skaters that ever played and what a shooter! However he did seem snakebitten in some playoffs, though I would never say the effort wasnt there from him in those games, he was a game competitor

  • JOHN 8:32

  • i am from montreal and other then russ courtnall i think you were always the fastest skater in all history of nhl hockey ;) i learned alot from watching you and guy lafleur skate awesome technique. loved watching you play

  • I must say, I had a fantastic career, and that douche Mike Keenan, had to get rid of me and my 30 goals.

  • one of the worst things about the cup was that Gartner did not get to raise the cup, but worked hard behind the scenes to get the name of the black aces (remeber those guys that did not play in the finals) on the cup for the rangers. What a stand up guy. top three faves behind mess and leetch. glad he is in the hall of fame.

  • Gartner is the man. Tears it up in NHL 94 as well ;)

  • Great player and underrated most definetely. :/

  • Gartner has been one of my favorites growing up. He is fast as heck on the ice. Wish he could of carried the cup with the Rangers! Nice tribute for a real underated player.

  • Just came across your video...awesome!! Gartner is my all time favorite....I still collect his stuff to this day (I'm 37). Even though I was thrilled when the Rangers won the Cup, it still stings that Gartner wasn't there. Classy guy, classy player!!!

    Thanks.

  • Gartner took the Rangers to the top, but was jetisoned prior to the playoffs. What a slap in the face. This guy is the most underated pure goal scorer of all time. 708? C'mon. And nevermind just getting goals (Cicarelli?), just look at Gartner's goals. Whata man.

  • He had a bad reputation for disappearing in the playoffs. That's why Keenan traded him, which I wasn't too happy with even though Anderson scored a couple of big goals. The slapper against the Isles was the hat trick goal in Game 5 in 1990

  • Yeah, and Anderson didn't do JACK SHIT until the finals except contribute some costly penalties the 1st 3 rounds. He had ONE decent deflection goal against Vancouver Game 3 after Bure got ejected. And another open net short hander from Messier. Gartner had 5 goals I think before Anderson even got 1 the playoffs that year. Oh well, we still won I guess.

  • I totally agree. He was my favorite from the Rangers back in the early 90's. After i heard that he was traded for Glenn Anderson, first reaction was:" Has Keenan lost it this time?" So underrated player. Fastest skater ever. Slapper was like a nuke. Natural goalscorer.

  • i agree gartner is the man and should have raised the cup...and beezer too...

  • I saw Mike Gartner score his 700th goal when he was with the Coyotes against the hated Red Wings. For Gartner not to be included as one of the top 50 hockey players of all time is a travesty.

  • I am a Ranger fan and Garnter was my favorite player.

I was never more livid then when news of the Gartner for Anderson trade came down.

A man of great skill, class, and grace.

Anderson contributed but I echo the sentiments...the only sad note of 1994 is Garnter was not present to hoist the cup

  • I couldn't agree with you more. I was very disappointed to see Gartner go and the only thing that could have made '94 sweeter if #22 raised the cup.

  • He did over seven hundred goals. Five hundred club is nothing. Great player.

  • I was just with Mike Gartner last night for the Superbowl. We are really good friends with him.

  • Dude, love tha vid!

I could watch Gartner highlights all day long!

    kudos brah!

  • As you can see, Im a giant fan of Gartner. He was traded in 94 from the Rangers to the Laughs for Glenn "Jurassic" Anderson. Joke of a trade. Would of still won the cup with Gartner on the team. Classic player with a classy attitude, would have been absolutely devestating in the new NHL with that slapper and speed.

  • Yes, the one regret I have about '94 is that Gartner wasn't there to hoist the cup with us.

  • Awesome Job, great tribute to on the mighty best there was !

Thanks a lot for this !

    Take care

  • Great vid man. 5 stars.

    Go Rangers.

  • Thanks Bro! Hard to find some Gartner stuff out there. He was due for a little reconition. Go Rangers!
