The one thing that irks me about CG hair is that it's always too perfect. It lacks real-world imperfections, such as tangles and such. Still, nice work.
I'm having a lot of trouble styling hair, goin for a similar style you have... any tips? Trying to have spline guides to comb from but it is not combing very nicely. Frizz is set to 0
How do you get those stiff tips with Hair & Fur? I'm trying to get it with multi strand, with a low value on Tip Splay and it looks ok in the viewport but when I render I don't get what I want.
Recognise that hairsprayed look, got the same results from messing around with flex modifier a few years back. I solved it though, The trick is to skin the hair to a spline that uses flex and not apply flex to the mesh itself. then use chasesprings, set up advanced springs and forces, such as gravity and wind to interact with the spline. It's actully covered in the reference, but you'll need to look very hard. Remember I struggled with this for months, lol.
do you ever have a problem rendering max hair at 720p? For me, Max renders hair perfectly fine at lower resolutions, but as soon as I hit 720p, it stops rendering when there's like 20% or so of the hair left. Any ideas? I'm using Max 2010 64-bit... Thanks!
it stops without saying anything... the render freezes for a bit when there's about 20% left, then the dialog box that shows the render progress just disappears indicating the render's done... yeah-- it's really weird. I just tested the same scene on my other computer and it works just fine-- funny thing is the one that doesn't work is a much newer computer.
actually, the comp that has that rendering problems has 6GB RAM... the one that doesn't have the problem only has 4GB... is there a setting somewhere that lets me tell Max how much memory it's allowed to use?
Apparently Max 2010 doesn't have the "memory limit" anywhere under the Translator Option. So what script are you talking about? Do you know what it's called? I wouldn't know what to search for... any ideas?
You really think it is amazing that every frame took 5 minutes to render? lol... if it was realtime i would agree but it is not... this movie was rendered frame by frame..
of course i know what 3d is ive been studying 3ds max for a year and a half as a hobby and hope to do it in collage so shut the fuck up, i said wtf because i didnt understand our comment, i was impressed that he had managed this on 1 gig of ram and that i dont know myself how to make hair work with physics
you need to take a step back and read what ive said, i do understand it im extreamly intrested in it and i can do it, although it may not be the best example as it was the first thing id ever made, there is a crappy army knife render ive done on my channle, im more than capable of using this software and dont need to be told otherwise by you
@jondyr Actually you can't. I encountered that problem several times, when my scene was too heavy to render and on render it just pops out with an error and closes the program. And I try over and over again but the same thing happens.
@jondyr No, no you can't you fucking imbecile. Running out of RAM is possibly the most common hardware problem in rendering. It is no challenge to exceed the available RAM on a machine running 4GB or more, I have done it plenty of times. Did I tell you you are a fucking imbecile?
@josepheath no man 1 gig is enough but like you said most likely you'll run out of ram. 1gb is enough just to model something thats it you need atleast 2gigs to get it to render and get something like in the above video :D
@jondyr - It's not irrelevant if you run out of it, so no, you can't render _anything_ if your computer can't even load up the files, or allocated the render buffers.
@jondyr thank you--what point do people who do not like something think they are making with negative comments? Like we are gonna go--oh yes you are right ? pfffft...

I don't mean it in terms of you HAVE too, but it would sure cut down those render times.

is it a out of memory error? or does it jsut stop whitout saying anything?

poloNINJA 2 years ago
yeah then its still a out of memory error its a bug commen whit max u use mental ray right?
anyways try to get vray it has that a lot lesser then mental ray.....
or you can find a script on the internet that you can render in parts that should fix it.
befrey 2 years ago
actually, the comp that has that rendering problems has 6GB RAM... the one that doesn't have the problem only has 4GB... is there a setting somewhere that lets me tell Max how much memory it's allowed to use?
poloNINJA 2 years ago
yes there is but it isnt a ram problem its a mental ray problem....
its not about your pc but about the program that has some mistakes in it.
at mental ray press f10 for render tab then go to processing and then go to translator option
you see memory limit...
increase it if you still have the problem then go get vray... or the script
befrey 2 years ago

poloNINJA 2 years ago
Accualy you can render parts of the scene and then put them together in the final render . like chopping the image in half.. or quads...
You need to do a bit more work but it shoud work.. I cant sadly rember the hame but search under BLOW UP in render settings..
3dmoddeler 2 years ago
you may be running out of ram? I'd say look into the GI or mental ray settings and toying with the amount of rays; that should solve your problem.

Please do tutorial for this hair because i saw many other video tutorials and always the hair of the videos looks bad...
SPORTGUSTO 2 years ago
that's a bite easy to do !!!
there is a better technic to have soft hair but i think its a little bit harder than the basic dynamic system !!
the technic is called : hair driven cloth !!!
the hair dynamic is based upon a cloth simulation !!!
they used it on BIOSHOCK project to simulate the "little siter" hair style !!
i hope i've been helpful ;)

Actually you can render anything on a computer with 1 gig of ram.
it just takes alot more time to render than if you had a supercomputer. if you dont understand this, then you maybe should study something else....

@jondyr When I try to render something, after a while it says it's taking up too much memory to finish rendering and stops.
DaftD0g 7 months ago
@jondyr - Actually you can't render _anything_ with 1GB RAM if you run out of RAM and disk space (should disk caching kick in).
TheDeadlyAvenger 6 months ago
@TheDeadlyAvenger Actually you _can_ render anything with 1GB ram. Disk space is irrelevant, so there is unlimited space for virtual memory.
jondyr 6 months ago
@jondyr - It's not irrelevant if you run out of it, so no, you can't render _anything_ if your computer can't even load up the files, or allocated the render buffers.

@TheDeadlyAvenger I think you missunderstood what i ment. 1GB of ram can support any size of rendering if you have enough disk capacity.
