No "MTV or VH1" back then...so....WHO KNEW!. We partied to this"BIG TIME"!.
A couple of times the guy sounded like Bill Medley from the Righteous Bros...I actually thought he was him. Come on...1967...Jr High. For this brother.... it was a "HIT"!!!.
Reason being it has a recording production similar to "Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore" a classic garage band tune from a year earlier (1966) by The Young Rascals. Both are excellent American rock songs.
Inspiration for the song by Gamble & Huff was from driving on the Schuylkill Expressway in Philly.

@capricorn4003 I think they were really influenced by Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati of The Rascals.

@SistahKepi i have to agree with you there as well. ;)

@SistahKepi I thought the lead vocal was Felix when I first heard it, and I could have sworn that was Eddie & Gene as back-ups.

The lead is really trying to have a Levi Stubbs style from the 4 tops.

The sound uncannily like The Rascals, not just vocal, but the feeling of the music

Here is another one who thought this was The Young Rascals. It was sometime in the 1990's when I heard the DJ say Soul Survivors.
