Yep. Perhaps there should be a proper filming undertaken by a producer of railway DVDs (for good quality) or maybe the HSTs even deserve their half hour of recognition on mainstream television. They're not just any old train!
It was the first train that scared the hell out of me and one for which I grew up to have a healthy respect for in terms of size and power and to convey this you need the full spectrum of sound.. from that fan whistle to the bassy sounding exhaust note. In fact this and the Deltic.. my god.. how did drivers stay awake for getting tired out by the loud murmuring rumble that came from the engine room????
When I was less than 10 years old I always had to cover my ears whenever the power car was going past me leaving York station. I was worried it would damage my ears!
My dad let me start one of these up once. That button fucking hurts your finger, takes about 30 seconds of holding that in to start it up :/
