This is impressive. I used to wonder what made id so proud of Rage -- now I know. It's not so much about Rage itself as everything surrounding it. A tech demo through and through. Can't wait to see just how awesome that freedom could allow Doom 4 to be.
@gabocrbll Still, the engine seems incredibly easy to make content for. Keeping it that way could be a HUGE asset for Doom 4, because user-created content is one of Doom 2's biggest strengths.
@TheOtherLioyd Yes it seems that is easy creating content and its just very well optimized, rage runs fluid and u dont need a "big nasa pc" to run it. But the game itself is just BORING
@gabocrbll Yup, as per the average tech demo. (Rarely is that a good thing, and just so we're on the same page -- I'm not excusing anything. My hypothesis is, that hazy and indistinct art direction came about because there literally wasn't any such thing -- they were so (rightfully) proud of their engine, I think they insisted on letting absolutely everybody squeeze a bit of their vision into the game. Also, overly long parentheses FTW.)
i could imagine minecraft looking with those textures and detail i mean why not minecraft is so leniar and blocky i am not saying its bad i am saying why not add some special stuff for it like bones lineag around some block textures rocks on grass bocks minecraft has a lot of block but they allmost look the same just diffrent sound and textures

i dont care how much i will have to pay to license RAGE engine Its the best for Free Roaming video games. great Animation, cutscenes and enviornments, objects etc
@XcrazyX10 The 20GB of textures are stored on the hard drive and are loaded up and rendered a tiny chunk at a time by the engine. It certainly isn't loaded up all at once! :P
@FoggyFishburne I'm thinking it might be some kind of twitch he has. Now that I watched the entire thing a few times, I noticed he actually does it quite often, throughout the whole vid.
@thatbastardson It is :). And he also have some more. But it just a part of Carmacks character. Usually people who can't or doesn't really care about hiding these, if so called "flaws", is very true and open humanbeing,
@nils4545 Yea, I hear really smart like john carmack tend to have little "things" about themselves. I guess that's his thing. Just something I noticed.
@dubmaticJRJ I wish but a multi-million dollar engine most likely won't be handed out for free. However if you want total control the Doom 3 engine should be released in the following months and you can modify every bit of code to your hearts content!
@dubmaticJRJ according to tim willits, you just bring up the console in game and type the name of the editor and it gives you all of the editing tools you need.
why does it say unreal engine thats not unreal unless i read the article wrong and its just the ralley part of this game that uses the new id Tech® 5 engine
@BrioCyrain but after id software moves on making doom 4, it will have 3 times the graphics technology of id tech 5 but will run at half fps on consoles, and on a pc 60+ depending on hard-ware.
@sd9800 last time I checked Physx only purpose was to have pre-rag doll tech. blood is usually an animation based on the developer and usually characters are always done in modeling programs. Not sure if I have heard of a game that used Physx for blood
John Carmark should learn a bit about gameplay, he knows alot about engines alright, but it just seems he is the only driving ID, and people are getting tired of these techdemo's to showcase yet another engine.
@slimmdogg420 I doubt you will need a strong PC if they have the engine optimized for PS3 and 360, which their tech is about 2006 hardware.
2007 engine running on 2006 hardware with DX11 PCs (2009+) costing about 1000+= I dont see the need to take out 2 grand. If you check wiki they said its an OpenGL version before DX10 and DX11 so it can run on XP. Seeing how the only graphics tech that can wear down a system is DX10 and DX11, I'm pretty sure RAGE will run smoothly on something less than 2k.
@BrioCyrain I hope you are right I'm in no mood to pony up for a new video card or anything at the moment.Especially with my money on the poker sites being tied up right now.
@slimmdogg420 If it helps, you can check my "Blood Stone 007 Gameplay 2" vid and see the graphics quality on that, I was running that vid on only a Nvidia 9800 GT, one of the most low end DX10 cards to where it's not even really sold anymore. The only reason the video is a Liiittle sluggish is because I was running the game in 1080p.
@Soundlmpact HUGE misconception I'd like to clear up... this isn't the RAGE engine (rockstar advanced gaming engine) this is id tech 5, used in the game RAGE. It will be open source in probably a long time, and the creator of the video is referring to the game rage when he says this september for 50- 60, not the engine. the usual price range for an engine like this is anywhere from 500,000 to a million. and rockstars RAGE is probably not going to be public until the next gaming generation.
@kragle2008 Oh no that's not how the gaming world works, people dont steal million dollar software... plus i wouldn't expect id to use someone else's engine cause... well... it's id. And I think RAGE is a cool engine just cause it's a cool acronym.
To be honest, this doesn't look that impressive. The art is great and the massive textures are great ... unique space for everything is awesome. But all the art methods I've used, without even having a preset engine or w/e. These are basically normal game dev art tools, perhaps more smooth ... but not suffecient to advance game art!
This is the key point; you're placing tiling flat rocks ... thats entirely unimpressive. Do this with displacement and I'll be impressed!
Why would he want an octree controlled, ray-casted voxel informed, virtual geometry? Isn't that just an even more complex data structure than the already prominent tessellation, Hex-tree, based solution? I am more curious about it though, than I am oct-tree'd megatextures, are they going to auto triangulate/LOD-hex-web the voxels surface area to then do basic dynamic interaction with the models in physics? How much extra performance will that cost over just nor-mapping & tessellating everything?
There is probably a really good chance Bethesda will use this engine for TES5, having recently acquired id software. They have reportedly been working on their new game as soon as they finished Fallout 3 which means all that pre-planning conceptual phase would have been done by the time they had acquired id software - which is building an engine based around large open worlds.
@chewymilkybar Todd Howard, lead designer of The Elder Scrolls, said in an interview with IGN that ESV would be using a completely new engine made internally by his Bethesda Softworks studio, and made it a point to say it was not using id Tech 5.
It just isn't happening. But that might be a good thing because for all we know, the new engine they are making might look even better.
@jeeziss Doubt it, Carmack and Co. are legit geniuses when it comes to applying real-time data structure solutions, seriously, they're people with extremely deep understanding of computers and abstract mathematical frameworks. They're as rare to come by in the programming world as an Astrophysicist is, in both groups about 1 in million people are qualified and understand the complicated math as they do in theory *&* application. Unless...they just "borrow" from Carmack's libraries.(very likely)
