Well, New York was called New Amsterdam when it was founded by the dutch settlers. When the brits came, they renamed it to New York. And the song is about New York:)

Please read the right story in a good history book (or have a look in wikipedia - although not the best encyclopedia in the world - where you can read a short but the true history story of the Dutch and New Amsterdam.
