The original was written by Trent Reznor (the main artist behind Nine Inch Nails). It was released on his album 'The Downward Spiral'. Subsequently, it was covered by Johnny Cash and others. I myself much prefer the johhny cash version it has a lot more feeling and energy in it unlike the very soft spoken emo version from NIN

@carlstss if i remember correctly, reznor said he wouldn't be playing this song anymore since johnnys version had a lot more feeling and although the song was written about his own life it seemed to fit cash better...or something like that! i also prefer johnny cash's interpretation

@MrSchnitzel19 That is exactly what is amazing about this song!! Cash was such a legend, he chose to cover a Nine Inch Nails song that he felt expressed his pain - totally unexpected move from the man himself.

@far0cry101 True. NiN's music is totally different from what Cash's. I think one can really hear that he didn't just cover a song he liked and sang the lyrics but really expressed his own pain in the song. To me it seems to be his requiem, he recorded it shortly before he died...
