@MissLULUgirl1995 ........ he WAS the protestant reformation. To say he has a big impact on it is like saying Mark Twain had a big impact on the book 'Tom Sawyer'
My only problem with this is people always think he was trying to break away from the Catholic church when he wasn't. He wanted them to reform and when they refused he broke away but I do like this video
'The Reformation was "a devastation of England, which was at the time when this event took place, the happiest country, perhaps, that the world had ever seen; but afterwards marched on plundering, devastating, and inflicting torments on the people, and shedding their innocent blood; abbeys, priories, nunneries, hospitals and other religious foundations were confiscated by the Reformers and Jews, who brought to England the misery of pauperism "
@marysueeasteregg It's hindsight, but it took three hundred years (since Innocent VIII) for everything to fall into place. One may trace waning church influence from 1200, and especially after 1300.
But Calvin stood on the shoulders of Luther, as did Zwingli. So to butterfly away Luther is to butterfly away both of those. It's true that there probably WOULD have been a reaction to the abuses of the Church at the time, but we can't know who, where or when...or how successful that reaction would have been. Thank God for Martin Luther: The guy had big brassy balls when push came to shove :)
It seems to me that if I remember right, Martin Luther actually was a strong proponent of transubstantiation. It seems to me that Luther repeated over and over again to Zwingli "This IS my body" - at which point Zwingli asked Luther what he did with John 10:7 - "I AM the door." Nicely done video - but lets understand that while Martin Luther began the reformation, He was not able to part with many of the extrabiblical Catholic doctrines - some of which still plague most Christians to this day.
@fandediscussions - Luther rejected all scholastic/aristotilian explanations related to the mystery of the Lord's Supper. So, he rejected transubstantiation, and the often promoted term "consubstantiation" is also a corruption of his beliefs. He basically argued that the Lord's Supper is the body and blood of Christ because Jesus in scripture said so (i.e. the "This is my body" referenced above) but hesitated to try to define it through human concepts and language. To Lutherans, it is biblical.
@loubocop - So he argued (often violently) for the beliefs he rejected? Come on - just admit that the guy was an amazing saint of God who re-discovered an amazing amount of truth that had been hidden by the catholic church. But he still was affected by some of their bad doctrines - and never was able to shed them. He wasn't God, after all, but a man.
That's why I want to be known as a Christian (Christ like one), and not a Lutheran (Luther like one).
Luther called transubstantiation "monstrous - both the term and the doctrine". He taught that Christ was present in his own way in the bread by his own word-- trans... implied that the priest by His own holiness changed the bread and wine into the body and blood. This is a real difference, and it remains between the churches today; it isn't the only one, nor the biggest probably. But if we think God is real at all, then understanding what God says about himself matters.
I see the love between cathoilcs and protestants at the time as shown by the pile of corpses, and inflicted by both sides. by its fruit the reformation was as worthless as the roman church it opposed
one thing, luther NEVER rejected transubstantiation. I do but martin never did. he was never as extreme as the anabaptists who founded the tradition i came from
@Strefanash There is an old Lutheran saying: Christianus mihi nomen est, Catholicus cognomen! About transubstantiation I believe it is wrong from the Lutheran perspective to reject Transubstantiation. It is another way of explaining the Real Presence of the Eucharist. Lutherans do have another tradition in this regard than Catholics, but this difference is not Church dividing. Other things are. Catholics and Lutherans should be friends today, no reason to be hostile in any way.
well, I am no lutheran. strictly speaking my background is anabaptist, and if i remember the terms correctly my stance on the bread and the wine is zwinglian.
@Strefanash Well for me I believe in the Word of the Lord; in the eucharist we make the sacrifice on the cross present again when we literally, as it says, are drinking and eating the true body and blood of Jesus Christ, classical Lutheran theology.
i do believe that the historical record justifies my comment. I read history for recreation, and am especially interested in 16th century europe. neither side showed any love ormercy to the other, and when a very small group suggested that they do tolerate each other they were angrily shouted down by both sides.
alas when religious issues are taken seriously by carnal minds like us hatred and bigotry are all too common.
Martain Luther was a great man. How dare any of you call him a heric. The catholic church was doing horrible things at the time. All Luther want was a change. I'm not saying all catholics are like that in fact probably only 1% is
Luther may have been a heretic according to the Catholic Church, but much of what he preached about ending the sale of indulgences, correcting clerical abuses, and the Bible in the vernacular is hard to argue against regardless of your faith.
You are completely right about his anti Semitic views however
That's funny. Luther didn't believe in transubstantiation, but he did believe that Christ was truly present in the eucharist. Lutherans maintain this belief today.
Perhaps modern-day evangelicals shouldn't tie too much to the fellow.
Well, sure, most Protestants still believe in the Holy Trinity. But my point is... you're Lutheran, right?
Well, your view of the eucharist is a LOT CLOSER to the Catholic view than most Protestants are. Most would say it's purely symbolic. That's why I think it's funny that this song bashes transubstantiation.
Our Church was founded upon the Gospel of our LORD Jesus Christ!!
St.Peter never intended for you to say what you just said!!
I can not even imgagine what the Saints would say now if they came back to life and see what you've done to the house of prayer. YOU HAVE TURNED IT INTO A DEN OF THEIVES!! NOT ONLY THAT BUT OF PETIFILES AND MURDERS AND WHATEVER ELSE!!
I'm not saying y'all are like that but the church in general is.
If by catholic church you mean it's literal meaning of "Universal Church" then I agree. If you mean Rome......Then there's a mistake on your part.....The church was founded upon Christ, and it won't fall because He's infallible,
I agree with you that the CC has corrupted a lot. We reformed for many reasons:
-The Biblical basis of Justification by faith apart from works
-The unreasonable veneration of the saints and angels through icons
-The unbiblical stance of transubstantiation
-The Pope (need I say more)
It stuck and is continuing even in our time because we are constantly reforming our methods /lifestyle to get back to the Word of God as our authority and not the syncretistic contradictions of the flesh's desire.
Hello. Haven't talked to you in a while. I was in a particularly "Protestant mood" when I wrote the above (Reformation Day, you say). What I said was a little harsh (and actually tongue-in-cheek). Please accept my apologies.
Thank you, CyranoJones for that last comment, that Mary is not a co - redemptor, because she is not.................she was a sinful person, just like anyone else.
Oh, and Mary is not to be prayed to, as well..................this goes against everything Christ preached, and this is absolute heresy.
I will be MORE THAN WILLING to debate with you................just as Luther defended himself at the Diet of Worms.
Martin Luther was a monk, who with the guide of the Holy Spirit, found out how much confusion there was in the Roman Church, not to mention how corrupt the papacy IS.
Luther was absolutely CORRECT in rejecting Indulgences, for this is not Scripture, nor is Purgatory.
Sayyourrosary = quote - "not one will come forward to debate me"
that's because you're a nutcase.
Nevertheless, let me let you in on a little secret. The catholic church was never the real church, just an extension of of the legs of iron empire as seen in Daniels vision.
The Roman empire had run it's couse as a political empire, so they made the switch just after 300AD to religio/political empire - all lining up accurately with early prophecy.
Very clever really, it allowed them to keep all the real estate and just switch the peoples attention from worshiping a Ceasar to worshiping a Pope. therefore, legs of iron, toes of iron. The clay simply indicated the fifth kingdom would be weaker, and slightly different.
Therefore, you don't need the catholic church of any other mediator to be saved, just personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
PS - sayyourrosary, be careful... i think the Jesuits have bugged your house.
I have been looking for a protester /sit at home and not tithe type to debate for over 2 years NOT ONE WILL COME FORWARD to debaTE ME ..YOU 2 sT pETER 3 16 ING YOURSELF INTO PERDITION i WILL DEBATE YOUR "SOLA SCRIPTURA" FOOLISHNESS ANYDAY . I would think you are happy the New Order Vatican says you are "saved' but they are liars and wrong also . No need to protest or convert they say ! no need to protest the cult is on your side now ! lol U R saved !!!! NOT !
just one question. what about people in like africa who've never even heard of religion. just because they're not "believers" they are sentenced to eternal damnation. and work on your spelling. ridiculously hard to read.
p.s. i dont belong to a lutheran church or really any organized religion. im just open minded. maybe you should try thinking instead of listening to your priest tells you.
Salvation is achieved first and foremost through Faith in Jesus Christ, living according to His Word, and repenting for one's sins. The Bible never says that salvation is reserved solely for Catholics, Lutherans, or any other denomination -- all of which are merely creations of man.
I'm Catholic and just want to say that I found the jab at transubstantiation, in particular, saddening. Prayerfully read John 6, followed by the Last Supper narrative, and you'll see why we believe that God transforms the bread and wine into Christ's Presence. Many early Christian writings support this understanding of the Eucharist as well. God bless!
This isn't my favorite recording of this song, but this is the best animation I've seen to go with it. I really love it because it makes memorizing information about Luther so much easier!
Remember Christians, the will of God is no Catholic, Protestant,Orthodox, Penticostal, Adventist, JW, Etc. NO DIVISION, Only Christians, holy, helping and sharing instead of buying and selling.
"That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me." (John 17:9-21)

"As soon as a coin in the coffer rings / the soul from purgatory springs."
I assume that he said it in German.
SilasRockefeller 2 years ago
but I mean it's not in scripture right?
000DarkNite000 2 years ago
Oh no. I was just kidding.
SilasRockefeller 2 years ago
Wasn't it Tetzel who used that phrase? It was a catchy rhyme, not a Bible quote. At least not one I can remember...

Let me tell you something, SAYYOURROSARY:
I will be MORE THAN WILLING to debate with you................just as Luther defended himself at the Diet of Worms.
Martin Luther was a monk, who with the guide of the Holy Spirit, found out how much confusion there was in the Roman Church, not to mention how corrupt the papacy IS.
Luther was absolutely CORRECT in rejecting Indulgences, for this is not Scripture, nor is Purgatory.
Purgatory is one of the major false teachings.

By the way, "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" is inside the Vatican II hymnals.
But, let me clue you in on this: EVEN THE VATICAN II FROWNS DOWN UPON THE RECITING OF THIS HYMN.
So, then, if Vatican II and Lutherans have much in common, as I have heard often enough, then how come even Vatican II does NOT recite this hymn?
Because this hymn does not rely on the Pope, or other men for leaders.
No, honey..................there is NO common ground between us Lutherans and Catholics.
KAMIKAZR 2 years ago
Don't even start, SAYYOURROSARY, about the New Vatican..........Vatican II? Is that it?
Vatican II still retains Catholicism heresies, such as submission to the Pope, and other things contradictory to scripture.
Even Vatican II frowns down upon the Reformation. There is no common ground between let's say Lutherans and catholics.
LONG LIVE THE REFORMATION...........Long live Martin Luther, John Huss, and the other Reformers!!!
To rely on Catholicism and the Pope is HERESY!

I debated Sayyourrosary via PM. He ended up blocking me. It's difficult to debate someone who refuses to listen.
CyranoJones 2 years ago 2
Very clever really, it allowed them to keep all the real estate and just switch the peoples attention from worshiping a Ceasar to worshiping a Pope. therefore, legs of iron, toes of iron. The clay simply indicated the fifth kingdom would be weaker, and slightly different.
Therefore, you don't need the catholic church of any other mediator to be saved, just personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
PS - sayyourrosary, be careful... i think the Jesuits have bugged your house.

Making light of one of the most evil men
who ever lived is not to funny at all .
"a gify freely given" "I'm saved""John says"
my fake baaabal says and I am going to
2 St Perter 3:16 myself into hell (most likely) is not a very funny subject matter .
"Jesus said" Few will find the narrow gate "
He was talking about believers (Catholics) where does that leave protesters and cultolosists ?
Convert today ...

just one question. what about people in like africa who've never even heard of religion. just because they're not "believers" they are sentenced to eternal damnation. and work on your spelling. ridiculously hard to read.
p.s. i dont belong to a lutheran church or really any organized religion. im just open minded. maybe you should try thinking instead of listening to your priest tells you.

Salvation is achieved first and foremost through Faith in Jesus Christ, living according to His Word, and repenting for one's sins. The Bible never says that salvation is reserved solely for Catholics, Lutherans, or any other denomination -- all of which are merely creations of man.
Oh, and Mary is not a co-redemptor.
