I remember as a kid reading in the newspaper a dicussion over the name. I wanted it to be called the Philadium. It was named Veterens stadium in honor of the war veterens. It fit in with the area since there was the navy yard and the Naval Hospital that across the street. At the time there was a lot of military housing in the area as well. The building of the stadium was done on tax dollars alone, so there was no bank involved.
Saw paul mccarteny in early '90s and my step-dad was one of the men who built it back in the '70s....why did they call the new stadium the vet? Banks have to put thier names on everything!!
what song did you used to have here, that madonna didnt want you to use?? And your not a company anyway are you? So what is the most they could do if you didnt take the audio out? what have your video taken down??
Being born and raised in Philly and going to the Vet to watch the EAGLES and PHILLIES was hard to watch this stadium go down. To this day I still look for the Vet when I go to the games but it will be really hard when they blow down the spectrum.
thank you jrahrah, thank you! so many great memories, heartaches, joys, dreams associated with that giant. how many times the cowboys reenacted scenes from brokeback mountain in the locker room with no media around...just sick. they should have been made to change in the parking lot.
i woke up that morning about 10 minutes before it was imploded. 32 years of history, an NFC Championship, NL Championship, and a World Series, all changing to dust and float away..... but not in our hearts
I can relate to you Phillies fans. When I go back to Jersey to visit in September, I'm going to see my Mets play at Shea one last time. After this season is over, Shea will meet the same fate the Vet did.
hey i know this video is so sad. is this where tug mcgraw played baseball,he played for the philies. i heard his son tim mcgraw had it imploded in be half of his father tug. he died in 2004 of brain cancer. and tim scattered his ashes on the ground.
Tim McGraw didn't have it done the team and the city did for the new place. As for Tugs ashes being there I am not sure of. Tug is loved here by alot of ppl.
It's surreal watching this, since I grew up going to this stadium . . . If you watch that Mark Wahlberg movie where he plays Vince Papale ("Invincible," which is a terrific film if you're an Iggles fan), they use CGI to convincingly re-create the Vet's exterior . . .
yeah this hurts to watch it again so freaking painful i went to the last eagles game there and the last phillies game there and im telling you alot of people was crying after it was all over the game
This is an incredible video. I watched the implosion on TV when it happened. It was a tear jerking moment. I grew up in Philadelphia and went to many Phillies games, Eagles games with my brother and father. We always had a great time. My father died nearly a year ago, so to watch this now is bittersweet. I had the pleasure of showing my 9 year old son this video. He was amazed. Thanks for posting this. It is one of the best.
This is the place where my earliest memories of great football and baseball games were made. I absolutely loved gettin out there as a kid with my brother and dad for a good Phillies/ Braves matchup. I know no player liked astroturf and not many fans enjoyed the view from up on high, but this place made many peoples memories. I have since moved from Philly, yet every time I visit, I look out off the highway and am saddened by my missing Vet. I hear the Spectrum is next. Please Philly dont do it.
this really is sad, such a great and deserving tribute and i agree would it have killed them to keep the structure even if it wouldn't be used, the astrodome is still standing and its been 8 years since it was used. just because it was a crappy stadium,it was a part of philly history, this video just brings tears to my eyes......
i kno the vet was a crummy stadium but i have some great memories from there,my first ever major league game was there,i miss you vet i will never forget you.....
This is the first time I've even been able to watch footage of the implosion, and after all this time I still sat here and cried. I grew up in the Vet, going to and learning the games of football and baseball with my Poppop and Dad. After Pop passed this was where I remembered him at his happiest, where he taught us what it was to be a true Fan. Thank you for posting this.
Thank you so much for making this tribute to one of our "old friends". The stadium was a sanctuary of memories for many of us. It was heartbreaking to see it go. Man loves to create and loves to destroy.
the vet was an amazing stadium. i had some of the best times in there. this christmas i got 2 seats from the vet and i constantly sit in them snd i also have some of the cement from there. this was the first time iv seen the implosion since its happened because i loved it so much it was too saddening. im like tearing up watching this. GREAT VIDEO.
I agree with the posters here, it's a great video. I'm from Pgh and think just like the Vet, 3 Rivers could still be used for football at least. It's such BS for the taxpayer to subsidize football stadiums that get used perhaps 20 days a year. Also how these type of stadiums were replaced only for business reasons to justify charging twice as much for tickets and to placate the rich with all the luxury boxes we subsidize as they're allowed to write off the cost as a business expense.
@oilcitydog Steelers like philly needed a new staduim 3 rivers was falling apart, no really it was. At the end of its lifespan a sections of brick started to crumble in diff parts around the staduim. It was either spend 100 million for repairs and upgrades or spend an extra 100 million on a brand new staduim.
Beautiful video. It was very hard to watch this come down on that March morning. Way too many memories with my father. Slew of Phillies, Eagles games. Pink Floyd and The Stones as well.
I was at the Body Bag game in 1990. Monday Night Football. It was so cold tailgating outside the stadium and a bit warmer inside. However, the Eagles just kept sending Redskins players to the hospital. That was a rough night for Skins fans.
Beautiful tribute. My favorite shots were the camera at the top (following the implosion around from the inside) and the brief (unfortunate that it was) shot from what I assume was the pitcher's mound. That would have been cool to watch it from the field...
I watched sports at the Vet for the first 20 years of my life. I loved games there, no matter the result. Amazing video, and it still gives me chills when I watch that place go down. Sure, it was a piece of crap stadium, but it was ours, and I loved it!
I remember the countless times having to urinate in the sink 'cause they didn't build enough stalls and urinals....ahhh the memories. need a hotdog ? take a walk for about 15 minutes and you might just get on,but miss the 2nd period of hockey. The place had to go... i mean it was a hell hole
THATS SO SAD. THE EAGLES AND PHILLIES COULD OF HAD ANOTHER 20 YEARS THERE. WHY DID THEY TAKE DOWN A PIECE OF HISTORY THE ONLY PLACE WHERE THE PHILLIES WON THE WORLD SERIES. I mean the Linc and CBP are nice.
I remember going to a lot of Phillies and Eagles games when I was a kid, the thing I remember the most is when the Cowboys were playing there and it was Micheal Erving's last game, it felt great to be there all the other time and it may have been a dump but it was Philly's dump that we came to love
God i remember going there as a kid, it was a great field, better the turner field to me. That more when baseball was a great game and not an enterprise. The good old days at the park. :( RIP Veteran.
My father took me to many games there. Many memories made. Wanted to get to the new park to see a game with my father, but unfortunately he died on September 08, 2006. I am going to see my first game at the new park on August 26. Just wish my dad and I could watch it together.
Sorry to hear about your fathers passing. I cherish the memories of going to the ballpark with my Grandfather and Dad. I fortunately had the opportunity to attend spring training with my dad and brother about four years ago. The love of Baseball, more than other sports (in my opinion) is something that is passed from generation to generation.
I got to the Vet a few times and it sure felt great to be there. The place was still new when I first visited and it was a wonderful site. Memories of the players and managers remain beyond the ashes. Thanks to the Phillies who played there, for the memories. I had already moved to Florida when it was demolished . I would not have wanted to see it happen. It is easier to view now. All things that are physical are temporary while the non-physical, such as visual memories, persist.
I managed to get tickets to the last Phillies game at The Vet. The tickets were for the 700 level at center field. Nothing great, but at least I'm there. Just before I got to the gate I met a guy whose friends couldn't make it to the game, so he gave me their extra tickets when he saw that their seats were better. He didn't sell or trade them to me; he just gave them to me. I managed to sit in the 300 level in right field, but I never got a chance to thank him.
Great video..sad day in March to see this fall..60 seconds. Hard to watch, so many memories here, especially with my late father and the Phillies games in the 80s, Eagles football, Pink Floyd in 94. A "dump", ok old
Thanks.........As I heard someone say, it may have been a dump, but it was our dump. I actually thought that despite its' vastness, it was a great place to see a game, and what great games I saw there over the years.
that is so true. it was our dump. that was where i learned the games of football and baseball. that was where i spent many great afternoons with my dad and grandfather. that was also where i saw my grandfather sing his heart out with his barbershop group for the national anthem. i really miss veterans stadium, but i still have the memories and i still love my philly sports.

Was outside the Vet back in the mid 1970's when the Eagles played the Cowboys on a Monday night.
Joe Lavender had just picked the ball up after a Cowboy fumble and scooted 98 yards for a TD.
The ground shook and you thought the Vet was going to collapse.
RIP 700 Level
