  • Que maravilla!!!, que lindo duo, cantado por "La estupenda" y magnificamente acompañada por Tourangeau. BRAVOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • She does a better performance with Marilyn Horne (I think it's at a charity Gala Concert at Sydney Opera House in '80s) -uploaded by dummysistem. She sings better & blends better with Horne. Still think I prefer Sumi Jo, tho. Just! :)

  • Have to say, I prefer Sumi Jo. Normally love Dame Joan but she's not as good as Sumi in this rendition (in my opinion). Also their voices don't blend that well -Joan sticks out far too much.

  • Absolutely agree this is the most beautiful duet ever written.

  • SUTHERLAND, THE DAME!

  • beautiful singing, but what beautiful costumes!!!! That makes it extra special for me, since it is sung in concerto mode a lot of times nowadays :)

  • oh my god, this is gorgwous!

    they're voices are heart-achingly beautiful.

  • Sutherland's french accent is just awful. Mesplé's rendition of lakme is waaaaaaaay better.

  • @scarf0 Goose

  • Caranba es nesesario sentir a estas super mujeres para sentir que aun puedo volar y que a pesar de los problemas en nuestro super planeta busco vivir mas para escucharlas "Perdon"

  • Under the dense canopy Where the white jasmine Blends with the rose On the flowering bank Laughing at the morning Come, let us drift down together Let us gently glide along With the enchanting flow Of the fleeing current On the rippling surface With a lazy hand Let us reach the shore Where the source sleeps And the bird sings Under the dense canopy Under the white jasmine Let us drift down together The Flower Duet (Sous le dôme épais) , first performed in Paris in 1883
  • Exquisite.

  • Now, THIS is the way this lovely piece is supposed to sound.

  • @maedilo1 the words translate to; Under a dome of white jasmine With the roses entwined together On a river bank covered with flowers laughing in the morning Gently floating on it's charming risings On the river's current On the shining waves One hand reaches Reaches for the bank Where the spring sleeps and The birds, the birds sing. Under a dome of white jasmine Ah! calling us Together! Then the same repeated again, truly beautiful.
  • My faviour duet. Do not understand a word, but the blend of voices are superb.

  • Magnificent and breathtaking !!! Thank you !!!

  • @anableps67360 What a charming excuse for a human being you are not!

  • Words are worthless, pure delight.

  • Words are worthless.

  • superb ...absolute perfection....

  • Watching this performance makes me giddy with delight. I don't know why it should make anyone cry. Is it a sad song? So beautiful, I guess.

  • @JustinFromSydney It's French... :-)

  • @JustinFromSydney You can find the lyrics and an English translation on various Internet sites.

  • Joan Sutherland is so so beautiful and so is that other lively lady

  • This wonderful duet was used in my movie the Hunger, and has haunted me forever. What a wonderful performance, thanks so much for posting it.

  • its as if their voices, like a creators hands, are weaving jasmine into being with their song.

  • tourengeau is the singer sutherland sent to study with michael trimble,, the only teacher she trusted. does anyone know where they are?

  • Joan, we miss you !!! RIP

  • Einfach Klasse- vielen DANK

  • 7 people must be numb...

  • Wonderfull music. Saddly almost all are tragics performance

  • WOW, this is marvelous.

  • Wow, I didn't know she died till today. She died the day before my BD. What a BEAUTIFUL crystal-clear voice! There will never be another like her. RIP. 4:02 am Nov. 2 2010

  • Absolutely lovely, but way to slow.

  • Lip synch.

  • Love you for ever dear angel

  • R.I.P. Joan Sutherland. :(

  • News of Joan's death yesterday - thank You God for this perfect voice and may she rest in peace - Blessings - Rene

  • Simply sublime. I will miss you Dame Joan. Thank you for the music.

  • R.I.P. . Dame Joan you'll live forever and ever. Your voice never dies.

  • Goosebumps! R.I.P. Dame Joan.

  • May you rest in peace, Dame Joan Sutherland.

  • RIP Dame Joan!!!

  • I love this song, it's so beautiful...

  • I love this

  • singing this for my senior recital with my best friend!!!1

  • I've been listening to various clips of this duet here on youtube, and so far, I like the Tuva Semmingsen & Inger Dam-Jensen rendition best. I like being able to clearly hear the mezzo. Most duets I've heard, the soprano is too loud.

This is still very pretty, of course.

  • For anyone searching Youtube for the best version of this duet, you have found it. The quality of sound is good, you get to see the real opera, not some pastiche of buildings or flowers?? Look no further.

  • Pretty fucking magnificent, and I know nothing about opera music, I don't even like opera music.

  • I've just downloaded this onto my new iPod Touch 32gb and almost can't wait 'til my next trip on the LRT or airplane. The only word that begins to describe this...SUBLIME. Ranks right up there with my favorite MALE duet..."The Pearl Fishers". Both "stranded on a deserted island" choices for sure.

  • Augh, I'm choking in fake tears of sentimentality, equivalent to those yielded from Orff's operas.

  • first I've heard this on the simpsons where homer becomes a boxer. powerful.

  • I have searched youtube for this - not knowing the title of the piece. Finally, success! So far, this is the most rich version I have heard. Thank you for posting!

  • The group "All Angels", in my opinion, sings it the best. I'm not sure if there is a good version on youtube or not, but everyone should just search the web and find their recording of it.

  • PERFECTION!!!!!

  • The ever-wonderful La Stupenda. I salute Joan Sutherland.

  • lovely voices great prformance.

  • surlamontaigne, the flower duet is one of the most emotinal songs ever written...so if you dont like operas, dont watch them ;-)

  • just BEAUTIFUL

  • Without doubt the most beautiful duet ever written, and most wonderfully performed...this is sheer perfection.

  • @1079walter I agree. This is humanity at most sublime.

They played the music in Carlo's Way. Pacino was on a gloomy NYC rooftop watching his girlfriend endure ballet class..

Getting back to Leo Delibes, he was mostly a ballet composer but this must have been a dabble into opera. Winds up being one of the most sensitive and intriguingly beautiful ever written. Lakme is a jewel waiting to be discovered.

  • @1079walter Fortunately, I don't agree. This sure is one of the most beautiful, but opera is plenty of many others. Greetings

  • awesome ! <3

  • DA BEST!! amzing and breath taking

  • by the way, do check out the tuva semmingsen/ inger dam-jensen interpretation of this wonderful work. it is among things so far across the threshold of beauty, that i cannot quantify it...

it is also, unfortunately, incomplete. oh, cruelty!

  • Under the dense canopy Where the white jasmine Blends with the rose On the flowering bank Laughing at the morning Come, let us drift down together Let us gently glide along With the enchanting flow Of the fleeing current

On the rippling surface With a lazy hand Let us reach the shore Where the source sleeps And the bird sings Under the dense canopy Under the white jasmine Let us drift down together

  • many, many thanks for posting the English lyrics

  • I dont know why, but i absolutely cant prevent myself from welling up with tears when i hear this song. it completely disarms me.

  • yep- doesn't matter who are performing the piece, or the calibre of their performance- if it is vocalised with even the remotest professionalism, i go to water instantly. i guess that speaks to the genius of delibes, and to the emotive power of the soprano/mezzo soprano pairing.

  • @ivansitopaisa Only a true American would use the word "disarm".

  • c'est quand même beau !

  • pas aussi bien qu'en studio !

  • I like how you can hear them singing "off in the distance"---a masterful touch!

  • la stupenda!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Unfortunately, Joan is a little bit old and her voice isn't anymore that of before, but she's still doing it good. Thank you, my dear ones!

  • incredible. a very famous rendition of this duet. lovely.

  • Madame Sutherland es divina, ya sea como una blushing virgin o como una enajenada Lucia di Lammermoor.

Es el milagro del arte. Bella, divina Joan Sutherland!!!!!

  • Is wonderful to see and hear Ms Tourangeau on Youtube, a very underappreciated artist. She was a terrific singer with a truly beautiful voice.

  • Tourangeau is so talented. Her voice is great and beautiful.Wow! I want to listen more on her voice.

  • no, musicfan,

    She is alive..........

so one more day I can thank God that we are alive together in the same Universe.

  • i love joan..she my idol...i love her..shes so awesome....dis is very beutiful and very inspiring...

  • WHAT A SET OF PIPES, AWESOME I AM IN AWE

  • Sad that no one commented on the Metzo - Huguette Tourangeau had a great run as Joan's metzo, but she retired early. I'm just thrilled to find this up on youtube!!

  • beautiful duet

  • lovely!

  • It is now five months later, and Dame Joan is, and always will be, still the best.

    Thanks again.

    I love her.

  • is she dead ? :(

  • I'm watching various versions of the flower duet on youtube. This one is the most beautiful so far.

  • maravillosa interpretacion de las cantantes

  • thank you! thank you! _^_^

  • Beautiful.

    Thankyou for posting.

  • Thanks for posting...amazing!

  • I think Dame Joan Sutherland, Leontyne Price, Victoria de los Angeles, Montserrat Caballe, and of course Maria Callas were the greatest sopranos of the latter 20th century...in my opinion.

  • You might want to add Beverly Sills, Renata Tebaldi, Pilar Lorengar, Birgit Nilson, and a handful of others to your list.

  • I agree Birgit Nillsson was awesome and Elizabeth Shwarzkopf, I forgot her!

  • Elizabeth Schwarzkopf's Marschallin and Verdi Requiem were otherwordly...ethereal! Her Requiem and Price's were the yardstick by which others are measured!

  • What about Mady Mesple?

  • Who...beyond the Lakme duet, what is she known for having performed?

  • Tales of Hoffman, Romeo and Juliette,

  • Gives me the chills - so beautiful! Thank you.

  • PERFECT!!! SO very many thanks.

  • this rocks

  • Thanks for sharing this beautiful song
