I completely agree that old time banjo/fiddle is really all about the rhythm or the feeling evoked by the rhythm.....but it seems Dwight is always playing the same rhythm......maybe I'd have to go to one of his retreats to understand his genius.
@thejuneapples By now, perhaps, you understand the genius in the playing. It's a style, a kind of lilt that the rhythm takes while the melody is going on. It pushes but doesn't speed up. It's like moving forward and swinging back at the same time. Very tricky! The genius comes from the ability to evoke mood and feeling from the deceptively simple textures of the instrument. But yes, meeting him would probably enhance how you hear his and all old time mountain music. I hope to meet him, too.
years ago there was an album called shakin down the acorns! recorded from old time bluegrass pickers from west virginia, i believe it was recorded in the late 60's or early 70's! priceless! mr diller reminds me of that music. thank god it's not lost!
