The Kindle swindle.! DRM restricted. That means that they want to kick my ass hard just because I am buying the books. They may delete my books without alerting me. That sucks. I am not that easily tricked. the contrast isn't very impressive if you compare to other e-book devices. The kindle can't read many formats. that is also not so good. my conclusion is that the kindle is overhyped. buy a better e-book reader. ;) Great review!

I like the large screan display of the kindle dx,but it's a little pricey. I also like the much larger library of the nook and the fact that you can loan your e-books to friend's for 14 day's. Something that you mentioned but didn't go into much is the native PDF support. As a person who uses (and in some cases overuses) PDF printers, this feature is the best feature of the whole device.

Say there's an online tutorial, a word document, or some other document you want to be able to reference and read through like a book. Well, using a PDF printer (CutePDF for Windows or Print to PDF on a Mac) you can make any document into a PDF and therefore view it on your Kindle DX.

I don't know what kind of linearly flowed, simple-minded textbooks you are reading, but can you imagine trying to study for a test with a textbook on a Kindle? In the real world, there is flipping back and forth, note-taking, diagram-drawing...

Books don't run out of battery; books still work when wet; books that are dropped still function. Books can be lent to friends.

I have a Sony Reader. I love it for its very specific novelreading purpose. But it cannot replace real books.

There is so much wrong with the claims in this video. eBooks (& Readers) are not going to take over unless they change everything about how the systems currently work. $9.99 is way too much for a digital book with DRM that cannot be transferred to friends or re-sold. (and the recent news that you have re-buy the book after a number of transfers. That's like buying a new copy if you moved too much-stupid) The day Used bookstores close is the day that the eBook readers win. i.e. won't happen.

You have a good point by the books costing less so the kindle should pay for its self in about 2 years, but in that time they probably would have made 2 or more new kindle versions.

so i'm nearly a sophomore in h.s. n thb i prefer hard copies of textbooks. for several reasons actually. one u don't need to power a textbook to use it. two if you damage a textbook its easlily replaceable, unlike kindle where if the screen breaks, there goes all 25 textbooks u might've had on it n the price of the kindle n three because you can't write on the kindle like you can on normal textbooks,

i'd still buy one, but it'd be kindle 2 cuz its small n portable, n the price isn't bad for it.

niice, atlantic high school in delray florida, not really the best schoool at alll, i mean the school is crap, but its rated this year as the 54th best school in america because of the IB program, and majority of our students attend IV league schools too. plus the IB program at ACHS is a lot harder then most. i mean sophomores take AP Lit sophomore year where other schools only offer it senior year.

and our county is so large, they can barely afford to pay for textbooks, let alone kindles hahaha

I agree with what you say, but if your someone who just bought a kindle 2 (I almost bought one in December), you'd probably feel cheated. I sure don't remember any announcement. This just happened! And you may ask yourself why the Kindle 2 doesn't have native pdf support and being able to turn the screen on its side.

Those are some good points. I guess the decision will depend on if you need those features. I have the Kindle 2 and I don't see a reason (like yourself) to update. It does what I need it to do. I think if you really needed the DX features and your willing to pay for it then thats fine. Its whatever suits your needs.

great points but I just don't think many people have the capabilities to purchase the DX. I for one am against the digitalization of books, but even I can see that it is inevitable. I for one would invest in the DX but it is too pricey. Maybe in the future the price will drop and I will purchase one. If I had to make the choice NOW I would purchase the Kindle 2 over the DX.
