not exactly. They tried to escape but was stopped by the "heaven's". Konzen(sanzo), Tenpou(hakkai), Kenren(gojyo) were dead in the fight, but only Goku's alive and had his memories taken off by Kanzeon Bosatsu.

I think he's like trying to stay happy so as not to worry the others. Trying to stay optimistic, or maybe escaping from reality? That explains the solemn expression on Gojyo and Hakkai face before they went to join him.
i love konzen's hair. i wish sanzo's hair was like that. he looks hot with hair like that.
