I was just in TX visiting a friend and did not get a chance to tour STI. I was wondering if you have ever used or handled STI's aluminum grip? I have been thinking of purchasing an STI either the tactical or edge. I would love it if the edge had the railing like the tactical.
@MAKAOFA I have not used the Aluminum grips yet. I know SV came out with them first and they are/were having some issues with them cracking. STI was doing something to get around this for theirs. Not sure if they fixed it yet. I would hold off on getting one until there is a better track record. Have you seen the pics on my FB page with the STI tour? I still need to edit and publish those videos.
@MAKAOFA I have more on the DP tour coming. The reloading room is AMAZING! I have not posted any videos of the STI tour yet, I only uploaded some pictures on my FaceBook Page. I'll try and email you a link to th epics if you can't see the pics on FaceBook. I think you should be able to see them even if you are not "on facebook".
I got four dawson base pads that came with a used magazine. The only thing I don't like about it is that they are red. How can change the color on them? Anybody?
@rippspeed1 I honestly can't remember. I think it is a 12 or 14. If you are placing an order from them, be sure and order a few "alumabuffs". I'm currently working on video about recoil springs that may shed some light on the purpose of having the correct one for your loads. Stay tuned so to speak.
@rippspeed1 They act as a shock buffer between the frame and slide. You should use them if you have a light weight recoil spring. The rubber shock buff give you a bouncy feeling as compared to the aluminum one that are more like a dead blow hammer. I am working on a video about recoil springs so be sure and subscribe so you will get notification when it comes out. I think it will explain a lot of things about recoil spring weight.
hmm. it looks like your running a hi viz front sight on your springer 1911. how do you like it with the plane black adjustible sights? im looking for some sight modifications i can do to my SA Range Officer when it arives with spending as litle money on it as possible. some people on the 1911 forum are also going with that sight setup. im considering trying it out myself. let me know how you like it. nice set of vids by the way.
@veilofpaya I love the fiber front site with black rear. That way the fiber front really sticks out. The 3 dot system to me it too much to look for in time critical situations. I like the small fiber front site (aim small, miss small). I like the Dawson Precision .090" front site. They sell it with install too. I will post a vid on how to install the fiber itself. Believe it or not there is a wrong way to do it.
@veilofpaya Thanks! Aside from posting shooting videos I'd like to "pass on" any knowledge I might have gained. I always hate it when something real obvious gets put in your face and you think "why did'nt anyone every tell me that?" or you think "Ahh crap, I should have figured that out". Anyway, thats a big part of the reason I plan to post similar videos. BTW, not sure if you are into hunting but I have a "hunting" channel TEXASNATIVE00, new camera and new PC... let the good times roll!
Hey Nick thanks so much for the 3 videos. I watched them all and they are very informative. I really want to get a race gun with a compensator and C-Moore scope. I say on one of your videos you paid a1000.00 for a .38 Super. Beautiful gun that is what I want. Great price too. How can I find a used gun like that at a price like that?? You really know about these guns. If you find one like that let me know. I really would like to purchase it. I am an avid gun collector. I like the 9mm or .38
can u make a video and show how to dismantle it all the way? including the main spring, trigger, sear and disconector? im wondering if its pretty much the same as the standard single stack? is it?
@ranierlags all the parts are pretty much the same and assembly/disassembly is pretty close. Only real difference is that to get the trigger out, you must remove the top 2 screws on the plastic grip, then remove the very tiny screw infront of the trigger guard. Then you can pull the internal metal frame out of the plastic grip, then remove the trigger from the plastic grip. I think that is pretty much the main difference.
@filipinofighter1 Some of STI's guns are made in other locations but I believe the 2011 frame guns are made at their headquarters in Georgetown Texas. The owner of STI shoots at our local IPSC club.
this might be a dumb question but i dont know much about the 2011 pistols. Can you put a compensator on the edge?. I know you can buy there other pistols with compensators. thanks
@whitecracker21 you can put a compensator on pretty much any of these guns. You will need a new barrel that is longer so it can be threaded or the comp can be glued on. In the old days of IPSC and bowling pin shooting, the guys were putting comps on 1911 45ACP pistols.
Hello. Iv'e got a Edge true my door today :) The gun came with Dawson angeled base pads on magasine, but they are a bit loose. Does your mags with square base pads fit the IPSC box for standard divisjon or do you have a different box in USPSA ?
I think the box we use here in the USA is a bit larger than the one used in other countries. I know shooters that have to switch out to the basepads you describe when they travel outside the US to compete in Standard division. The big Dawson basepads can be used in USPSA Limited division but I'm sure they are not gonna fit in the "international" box.
I can get 20 maybe 21 in the magazine with that configuration. However, I usually load 18 in all my mags. I beleive that helps with reliability and makes it easier to seat the magazine in the gun. If I "need" an extra round or 2 I will stuff an extra in. But for the most part I just plan my method for shooting a stage based on 18 rounds per mag.
No mods were needed, I just dropped it in. It is nice to not use the paperclip method. Thanks for the question, these are the types of questions I was hoping for when I posted these 3 videos. There is so many aftermarket goodies out there that folks don't know about.
I'm using the Recoil master system of STI from factory and it's turned out to be really hard when I try to take it apart to clean and put it back together, specially with the long dust cover like the Edge. I also have the STI Edge but my is .45ACP . And one other things I found with Recoil master; they are pretty easy to brake. One of my friend was using the recoil master and he shot not even a thousand round with it and then it broke.
I tried the recoil master on my 40 and another STI in 9mm. I found it kinda "clunky". It felt like an airsoft and not very smooth. My wife uses one and loves it. I guess it boils down to person preference. As far as it breaking I'm not sure what to say. But I have seen TONS of tungsten steel guide rods break. For disassembly, do you use the little green/red plug thing to take it apart or just to put it back together?
yea I agree with what you said and yes I use the take down tool thing to take the recoil master out .
taking it out isn't a problem but when it comes to put it back together the barrel and the dust cover is kind of get in the way so I end up use my brass pounce to get the take down tool out. I don't really enjoy doing this to my pistol so now I'm switching to the dawson one. And about the magwell are you using the aluminum one or the heavy one? I really like the heavy one but it's more expensive
There is another method for taking your gun apart. I 1st encountered it at a match at the safe table. Using 1 hand grasp the side of the slide and put yourthumb through the trigger guard and manipulate the sidel back so that you can remove the slide stop with the other hand. The pistol will come apart. Then use your take down tool for your recoil master to remove it from the slide/barrel. When ready to put it back together, insert the recoil master and remove the tool. You can put it together...
in the same fashion that you took it apart. However, in both take down and assembly you will be dealing with the tension of the spring. Does that make sense?
I shot a USP in 45ACP this past weekend. I think its kinda "blocky" like a Ruger P89 (IMHO). I think the STI will fit you very well. The 2nd STI I show is my wife's. It has the short trigger for her small hands. Not too mention you can file down the plastic grips to mold it to your hands. Since IDPA does not really have a power factor, you may want to consider 9mm. Ammo will be cheaper.
Thanks for getting back to me, cant wait.

@JPEBeard you could take them to your local anodizing shop and have them anodized

I own a USP Tactical in .45 ACP for USPSA Limited and IDPA ESP, but I'm thinking of getting an STI Eagle with a brushing in .40 S&W.
Do you know how well the grips and ergonomics compare? I have smaller hands so as long as it's not larger I think I might make the switch...
