As long as we have a law-making body that holds sessions year-round they will make laws that infringe on our personal liberties. How could they possibly avoid it? Sure its common sense but it still happens. Adding a penalty for doing it now can at least punish inconsiderate or ignorant people. Though what about those caught by accident or something, and what bob said, its really true, this is such a petty issue that we definitely shouldnt be wasting time in legislation for it. Do something that relates to our economy and country as a whole before we start revising things most everyone does already.

Like all the other traffic laws if they are not enforced by police - do we really think your average drivers will observe or even be aware of these laws that they are violating? Careless driving / reckless driving cover most of the stupid actions people initiate. They also in most states carry the highest penalties for general violations. In NJ cell phone use is a sub-section under careless driving.

xD I saw a sign on I-90 heading back into Chicago that said "STATE LAW SLOW DOWN FOR EMERGENCY VEHICLES." Really? And as for this Law you talk about, NY legislators are almost as bad as California lawmakers in enacting as many laws as possible so as to micro-manage our lives, in an attempt to slowly, agonizingly slowly, get us used to having our Freedom of Choice taken away from us.
Some have suggested (and I wholeheartedly agree with them) that before Congress, or ANY Governmental legislative body, pass a new law, an old one MUST be purged from the books.

You're absolutely right; one problem is, most drivers in NY suffer from the Disease of Entitlement, which, among other things, makes them think (if they think at all) that they have Right of Way wherever they are...ambulances and people in need of emergency care or fire trucks and potential deaths be damned.
This is why, many years ago, when I lived in Jersey and used to drive cross country on vacations, New Yorkers were BY FAR the most hated drivers on the road. NO Common Sense.

One time i was walking when i heard the siren of a firetruck.
As it came flying down the street there was a car stopped in it's path.
At the last second the firetruck crossed the car as the driver slowly moved to the right.
What really gets me are the people that HAVE to get through an intersection without stopping at a red light.
If waiting a few seconds at an intersection is such a difficult task for you, than you shouldn't be driving.

The objective of most laws is not to limit our behavior, its their way of expanding "Justifiable cause" to abuse those who they know will not comply for whatever reason.
How many times have we heard:
"We will conduct an investigation to see if department policy was violated"
So, they create laws (policy), which create more opportunities for violation.

I feel that Americans have become selfish, mainly because we have been given so much and had to work or fight for so little. Personal responsibility is not being selfish though. To expect that if you can work you should, or that everyone that can help should. That is the nanny state taking away peoples personal responsibility.

@shalcall Have you ever heard of the 'Laffer line'? Check that out, then we'll discuss what taxes should be taken. Speaking of taxes there should be responsibility when it comes to spending. It's our money not the governments; so taking personal responsibility with how our elected officials spend our money isn't double talk. While it does seem hypocritical now, there does have to be a starting point. Hopefully they will stick to what the are saying.

I often hear it from simpletons that do not understand basic macro economics and literally believe that cutting taxes will ALWAYS increase government revenue, even when you show them studies that prove with math, that they have not always done so.

@shalcall First off there is no reason to insult me. Secondly it is theoretical, just like most models that economists use. The one thing I do have on my side is history. Having and advanced degree in economics you should already know that there is always an ebb and flow to the economy. Will it always work to cut taxes to raise revenue? no. Will it work more often than raising taxes and putting people out of work that can pay taxes thus lowering the amount of taxes being about to be taken?

I literally meant that the vast majority of conservatives who bring up the laffer curve have no idea what it really means, nor do they have a good grasp of basic macroeconomic theory. You have to be specific when you're talking about taxes. Raising capital gains taxes won't put people out of work. Raising income taxes by a small amount, won't put people out of work. Raising corporate taxes MIGHT, depends.

I remember the first time I ever went to New York city a couple years ago and there was an ambulance stuck in traffic with it's lights on behind other vehicles, I was shocked that no one moved out of it's way than I was thinking what is wrong with those people to not get out of their way, what if it was someone they knew their child or loved one, in the ambulance or worse maybe the ambulance didn't even get to them yet, ridiculous that they let people get away with that for way to long...
