The 8.2L was known as the "Fuel-Pincher", and were some of the first 4-stroke Detroits Diesels that GM made. The 8.2 was also the fore-runner of the 4-stroke Series 60 Detroits, and excelent engine.
The 2nd ford probably has a Ford 6.6L inline 6 turbodiesel. One of the most durable medium duty deisel engines made besides the DT466. And the Ford 7.8L.
I remember those school bus. I used to take the school bus to PS 154 back when I was a youngster. PS 154 is located in the Windsor Terrace section of Brooklyn. The school bus that I do remember is the International S-1800 diesel truck. I remember these school buses back in the day.
That International bus quite possibly is a 1987 as the Navistar International logo started to appear that year. I started 6th grade in 1987 and that year the school district purchased a new International with a Ward body and it had the Navistar emblem mounted on the grille.
Actually the Navistar International Logo started in April 1986, I recall back in Montgomery County, Maryland, some school byses that were brand new in the fall of that year had the Navistar International Logo emblazoned in their grille and it's associated diamond in the steering wheel's center
Brings back memories, of course these are newer than the types I rode to school on. My mother was our bus driver, and before I was old enough to go to 1st grade, I used to ride with her to school. I would sit on the 'First Aid' metal door next to the light/heater control panel. That certainly would not be allowed now. I was always fascinated by the lights on the control panel. Sometimes she would let me push the buttons for the flashing 'stop' lights. Great video!
Chad, it would be neat if you could work at getting the best of your buses ready for inspection so you could drive it further than your yard. I think most places make a distinction between a bus thats driven to carry passengers and one that doesn't, and it determines what type of license the operator has to possess.
I will have to do that...The 1978 International bus has its insurance policy kept current but needs its tags and inspection renewed. I did drive it out on the road several years ago but now it needs the carb rebuilt. It was actually driven out to my place. Eventually I would like to get the other ones in road-worthy condition (tires and brakes are the biggest problems) but at least they have been saved from the junkyard. They had not driven on the road in many years and were towed to me.
I remembered this one 83 International bus with a big V8 diesel engine. It didn't have a turbo and it was loud. The badge in the middle of the steering wheel was the "H" and the "I" in the middle of the "H".
By the way. That last engine in the Ford B-600 is a Cummins inline six.
Was this the 9.0 diesel? I think these were the type that were used on the buses when I was in school. Was there a built-in ether starting system? I remember the IH logo on this type of steering wheel, that was when it was International Harvester Corp...somewhere around 1986 or 1987 it changed to Navistar International and the Navistar diamond logo began to be used.
Thanks for the info on the Cummins, is that a cummins 5.9 liter?
Yep, it was a 9.0 Liter International. I liked how my school system starts the bus numbers off the the year it was made. The bus number on that bus was 83 - 5. The buses that the school aboard had when I was there started from the years 74 - 95. In the year 1995 they were still using school buses that ran on gasoline. The International Loadstars with the 345 and 392 V8 Engines were the olny ones they had that ran on gasoline. Everything else was diesel.
At our school the buses just used numbers 1-36. As old buses were traded out, the new bus would take the old one's number. I still can remember the body/chassis of each bus for each of the numbers. I think the last year the Gas IH's were used was about 1991 or so.
I sat down in the seat of the IHC diesel while it was running and revved up the accelerator pedal! It ran so nice and smooth. I should have made a video of this but they just started them up right before the auctioneer began calling out the bids. I just loved the sound of the diesel engine accelerating. It makes me wish I would have just gone ahead and bought it!!
When I road the school bus on a regular basis I road a small bus, which was shaped like a bread truck but smaller. The engine was a Chevy, and the body was a Superior. The doors on the bus were electric, instead of the big handle. So in the Winter time (I am from Wisconsin) when the weather was way below zero, the doors would freeze up and not open.
They was also a Thomas Mighty Mite, A Blue Bird Mini Bird, Carpenter also made its own version of this... can't remember the name... The chassis was called the General Motors P-30... some of these were actually good buses.... especially the Blue Bird... LOL
I remember that kind of thing from when I was a kid too...one time there was a coolant leak from the rear heater and they had to stop the bus and transfer us all to another one.
When i started school in 1977, we were still riding 1965 Chevrolet buses with Superior bodies, and they were BASIC...4 flashing red lights and that was it.
I started school in 1982 and at that time all of the buses were International Superiors and Carpenters. I'm kind of amazed my school district went for almost all the options. They were all Loadstar 1800's with I think 392 gas engines. The first diesels they got were 1983 Carpenters with IH 9.0 diesels. All of them always had radios too. The older ones had AM radios with one speaker in the front and one in the rear and the Diesels had AM/FM radios w/4 speakers.
Yeah accually Ford made the old 6.6 and 7.8 Turbo diesels but they stoped making them in the early 90's, from what i've heard they were awesome engines and were used for Medium and Heavy duty trucks.
I know one of the engines in the buses was a 6.6 Ford diesel. It is not shown in this video, I still need to upload it. It has one long rocker arm cover. The other ones seem to have 6 smaller rocker arm covers but something about those other engines doesn't look like CAT.
The buses we had when I was in school had most all of the options, including lighted school bus sign, heated mirrors, AM/FM radio, air horns, and strobe lights...their control panels did have most of the optional switches.
Those take me back. My family moved from place to place when I was a kid, but I usually took a bus to school, and I rode in all types.
That little prayer on the later tickled me. Considering what kids' attitudes are today, I would've thought the driver would've posted something like, "Have a plan to kill everyone you meet."
Have you ever seen Jake Von Slatt's bus that he converted into an RV? He did a phenomenal job on it.
LOL, I bet you circled the lot like a hawk deciding what you wanted. The 6-cylinder diesels aren't as common on this side of the country, perhaps because we have some significant mountains and grades.
I was putting in bids on the buses but once they started getting up past $500 I had to drop out of the bidding. I really wanted (and needed) the FOrd pickup most of all and couldn't afford to get the buses too.
oh man I'm obsessed with buses lol we had those international buses in our school district they were all manuals, and that sound of the door latch clicking shut brings back memories! Man I would soooo buy one of those buses! I like that prayer on that ford too
Yes, I remember that door latch sound too! Also I can remember the bus kind of shuddering as it would start out in 1st gear from a stop and the sound of the engines and transmissions. The buses I actually own though all have different sounds and feelings though from the ones I rode when I was in school.
Yeah I noticed the '86-'87 buses (international, Thomas body) had a louder engine, like BWAAAAaammmmmm BWaaaaaaaaammmm lol then in '88 it was quieter and different sounding, and in the 1990 models they really improved the soundproofing and it was much quieter I started school in 1985 I think they used Carpenters before they went to Thomases
I have always liked buses...I remember in middle school sometimes the bus driver would let me sit up in the driver's seat as people were leaving the bus at the high school. Now I actually have some I can drive (although unfortunately I couldn't afford to get any of the ones shown in this video)
When I see these buses, I wanna get one and convert it into a Mobile Home thingy; But I dont have the time, money and space for it ;-(

I think the deal is that you have to remove the seats so it can be designated a recreational vehicle, then you don't need a CDL.

if you want to know the engines in those buses,
The International has a DT-466 turbo diesel (those are good engines, all we run in our IH trucks)
