It does have some similarities to minimalism (Philip Glass etc.)

But as far as I know, the major has nothing to do with what people listen. Only the excuse is different. Instead of being "Too Long" and/or "Too Boring", classical elitists might shirk at the thought of guitars electronics and drums.
