The appeal of Tekken over Virtua Fighter is accessibility, I think. Virtua Fighter prides itself on its depth and technical brilliance, and the price of that brilliance is that it will be lost on some people. SEGA knows that, and SEGA knows that's why Tekken has outsold Virtua Fighter on consoles. Tekken has its thing, and Virtua Fighter does what Virtua Fighter will always do. I'm glad that both games exist, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Well sir, i must counter with the reverse. While VF has a steep learning curve in the beggning, as soon as you get a handle on some fundamentals and advance play, it's easier to get into battles with people and the gap is not as wide as some may think. Tekken's accessibility means nayone can start button mashing against others until they fight real players, and it only takes one juggle to ruin it.
@Lobelia sorry to double post but I wanted to continue. I think the real advantage besides accesibility Tekken has over VF is the same advantage Street Fighter has over KOF: more charming presentation and characters. Even though VF came before Tekken, Tek has more fighting game archytypes, outlandish moves and that general Capcom vibe, while VF may look bland and boring by comparision (though those corny 80's voices make them more awesome than the angsty Mishima clan).
I'm not even a Tekken player. I much prefer Virtua Fighter. However, Tekken has more widespread appeal for the reasons both of us listed. Granted, a Virtua Fighter novice will hit that barrier of competitive viability much later than a Tekken novice will, but at the same time, you can mash buttons and see some cool shit much easier if you play Tekken.
@LobeliaM72 Without Virtua Fighter, Tekken may never have existed, Tekken started out as an imitation of the original Virtua Fighters, right down to the character roster, many main Tekken characters were just rip offs of Virtua Fighter ones.
Tekken will however always probably appeal more to the clueless casuals and the new kiddies on the block who don't know better.
