I too was a friend of DC in his younger days. I was going to visit Pittsburgh and was looking forward to seeing him for the first time in 40 years but his death intervened. Believe it or not DC was in the process of learning this song when I first met him. Thank you for the post.
@jimbob471000 Thanks for writing jimbob. I still miss learning about music and all manner of things from DC. He used to combine this with My Window Faces the South which I can't do justice to, but it's a great pairing.
@jasmo58 I don't know My Window Faces the South. I looked it up- a lot of artists have done it. I would think that his version would be closest to that of Bob Wills but DC could soak up a million versions of a song and come up with his own take on it.
DC was my father. Not a day goes past that I don't miss him.
Ultimately... you did pretty good. I remember how he would play this song flawlessly while smoking a cigarette and carrying on a deeply philosophical conversation at the same time. I have just about everything he ever recorded and the only version I have of this song was much more highly produced. I wish I had a version of him by himself playing it.
