No offence to Maggie Gyllenhaal, I'm sure she's a very good actress in her own right, but I preferred Katie Holmes as Rachel. When it comes to actors (within a serie, not reboots etc.) I just prefer the original actors. I also found there to be more on-screen chemistry between Holmes and Bale than with Gyllenhaal. In The Dark Knight, Rachel is also less portrayed as a woman of action, but as a real damsel in distress. I'm not blaming the scriptwriters either though, their work was exquisite.

I like to think that Batman Begins shows a more naive side of Rachel, someone who wants to help the world but doesn't know how to protect herself from it. I think Katie Holmes did a pretty decent job of that. I loved Maggie Gyllenhaal though in The Dark Knight, she played a way more evolved Rachel, who had pretty much the same values but with some edge! I think her and Bale had more chemistry, it's a shame she wasn't originally cast.
