Watch: "Tony MacAlpine, Billy Sheehan, Derek Sherinian and Mike Portnoy - Lines in the Sand" & "Tony MacAlpine, Billy Sheehan, Derek Sherinian and Mike Portnoy - Hell's Kitchen" (videos - 20 january, 2012)
Here's the straight truth about Portnoy: he's a drug casualty. Blow, weed, alcohol, pills. He started with the cocaine use again around the time he joined Avenged Sevenfold (notice how skinny he got?) and his condition is deteriorating rapidly. Apparently he collapsed backstage after an Adrenaline Mob concert. It's only a matter of time before he ODs.
@MrDreamTheater2 you do realise he finally got a bit healthier during his time with Avenged? Still a douche, but i don't think he got back on cocaine with A7x, although it couldn't be a bad thing because he didn't do anything interesting since he stopped doing drugs....
@MrDreamTheater2 Ur an idiot. Portnoy got skinnier because they had him working out and he was on the road with them for a while. He's said that they had him working out everyday. If you look at M Shadows, then I have a feeling that's why he looks the way he does. You fucking moron
Derek was my favorite keyboard player with DT.I know Jordan is far beyond anyone ,but Derek seemed to be an awesome musician to jam with! And Mike P. Simply the BEST!!!
For all the people knocking this, its not that bad. Of course its not DT but its a good jam either way. I like it for what it is. Life long fan of Tony!!
I guess it is easier to play a Dream Theater song when you change just the drummer than when you change the bassist, the keyboard and the guitar player. Let's face it.... this one really sucked at the end even though they all are amazing musicians.
@GUITARRIFIED this is just a gig for some musicians - this is not a band. I just think they just maybe met 1-2 times before live set, so you could not expect so much about this. Of course MP can play all the parts, but this was just like jamming (without any singing etc...) If Tony wants to learn/play the whole song, he can do it trust me... If You look DT gig footages, this solos aren't too good from JP either always
@Scanhorst Totally agree... Tony McAlpine can play this song and more. He can even play keyboards better than Derek, which is more than what JP can do, lol. Cheers !!!
Derek, and Mike were obviously not going to have any trouble playing this song, since they wrote it, and performed it 100's of times. I guarantee Billy's playing wasn't any more perfect than Tony's, so reverse the senario, and have petrucci play "Hundreds of thousands" with little practice, or have Myung play "Addicted to that rush" with little practice, and also take in the fact that these Famous musicians have there own styles of playing, and don't sit at home and practice emulating like us.
I think they did a good job although it didn't sound right in certain places well done for Billy Sheehan for actually managing to play it on a four string bass. Favourite song of FII
Excellent performance by world class musicians, all. Some folks disagree: if it's not al the original band members, it aint at all good enough. Still, great playing.
To see it like this is a bit sad... Whatever happened between Mike and the DT-Guys in the past is not important.. They should try to act like grown ups and reunite ... I am not interested in DT with Mangini (although i like this guy as a musician)...
@TheHollowGermany Try putting aside your deeply seated love for Portnoy for a second, and stop being an ignorant fanboy. Maybe then you'll realize that the latest DT album sounds FAR better (not just a little better; FAR better) than any of the last 5 DT albums, and that Mangini is an incredible drummer with far much more to offer musically and technically than Portnoy
@BOOLsheet Oh no.. don't try to argue with me.. No chance buddy .. I left DT-Fan-Camp about 4 years ago.. I don't like their new records and i am not interested in the latest record..I tried to listen to it about 4 times and i never made it to the end because of my lack of comprehension for the name and shame campaign of the guys.. With my last comment i just tried to point out, that it doesn't feel the same to see MP playing without the other guys... And now enough of it
Mike and Derek fucking awsome to see them playing this together! I can't blame the guitar if they were off a little.. they were'nt a part of DT before.
I don't really understand the comments claiming that MP sucks because this performance wasn't good. If he had played it with DT the performance probably would've been as good as they've always been.
He's not the one fucking up in this video, and your logic about him sucking without DT is just retarded!
@yanthao Tony MacAlpine played this as Tony MacAlpine would play this. Not like John Petrucci would. But I do agree that he was off at times. Understandably so. They probably didn't reherse all that much, you think?
This man right here is the heart and soul of Dream Theater, when he left DT he took the magic away with him, and DT is now boring and will never be the same without his playing.
Please come back to DT Derek Sherinian, your fans miss you!
okay okay i love portnoy but.... dudes!! this is crap... the only cool thing in this jam is.... derek and mike... because they know how to do this....
I really love MP, and Derek, and Dream Theater. The original Lines in the sand song is one of my fav....but this version is wrong and sad, they shoudN have played it. Tony and Billy destroy it (and I know the have talent and I respect them). This song should remain only for DT. (Or EX-DT Derek and Mike alone would have made a better job I think)
McAlpine screwed up this one real bad. He didn't know the song well enough to cover it. I read some comments here saying he can choose to play it anyway he desires as its a cover. True, but at least play 'on time' with the song and not FUCK it up.
Sheehan played like a professional, notes right in the pocket with Portnoy's kick.
Sherinian was pretty much flawless as well
Portnoys face at 2:35. Never seen him so angry like that before. Mike skipped a beat mistakenly switching sticks at the end
Except for the last minute, that was great! All of the haters need to understand that the point of performing this song was, most likely, not meant to be a spot on cover. Mike and Derek just have an advantage over Tony and Billy in the fact that they knew the song infinitely better (they did write it after all). Even so, why would you expect Tony and Billy to play the song note-for-note? They are not JM and JP! Mistakes happen, when playing live! Though, I'm SURE all of you knew that. ;-P
@Durs11290 When did Mike even claim that he didn't regret leaving DT? Is the thought of MP having regrets helping you sleep at night? If so, maybe you should see a Dr. just sayin'.
@mikeyjwf How would you feel if something that you poured your soul into for 23 years was taken away from you, I think the other guys were really asshole for not letting Mike rejoin, out of everyone he definitely did the most for that band and they didn't even let him have a second chance for something as little as asking for time off.
@DyingSID666 I'm sure they considered it, but by the time he asked them if he could rejoin, Mangini was already in the band. He had already quit his job, and he has a family and stuff. They were already getting to know Mangini and it definitely wouldn't have been fair to him.
@DyingSID666 Yes, I agree...why was your message directed at me? I was just calling out someone else that's seems to get joy out of MP's regrets. Why is that what matters to some people? This LOL @ Mike Portnoy crap is getting old. Who cares?
Mike Portnoy didn't fit right with the others here, not saying this was a great cover or anything, but at least Billy, Tony and Derek were in tune with each other, Portnoy sound 1 step ahead of them.
You guys simply can't let the guy live his life, right?
Every step he does, you need to judge what and how he's doing...
So sad you can't see it's cool to see the guy in action, he met an unbelievable bass player, an old band member, a world class guitar player... That's it... Enjoy and shut the f### up, or simply press the BACK on your browse and go back to your boring life...
Come on, there's half of DT on stage... Blame the other guys, one does not simply replace John Petrucci. On the other hand, you can like Mangini more or less than Portnoy but you can't deny his flawless performances in DT
Haters, write music for 25 years, and try to "forget" it just because you had a disagreement with other human beings. Art is a part of you, it's just normal you want to spend some time with it every now and then. Thanks Mike and Derek for this, and thanks Billy and Tony for playing along.
lighten the fuck up people. honestly you all sound like little whining kids. this is a one off jam for fun - playing a song that DEREK wrote, or at least had a massive influence in writing. I find myself often preferring Derek's playing than Rudess' wankery. As much as I love DT. And don't dare knock on Mr Sheehan. He is an absolute master on the bass and I'd take him over Myung any day.
Guitarist isn't impressing at all though.
Basically, just enjoy the music for what it is - a bit of fun
@jwe986 Um no it is not. He was one of THREE founders. He decided to leave which no longer makes it his. Just because he is a me monster saying, I did this and I did that til he is blue in the beard does not make it his. It makes him a control freak. And clearly DT benefited without him.
@Crazycar213 thats ur view but tbh the new album is a pile of shit compared to the dt back catalogue n thomas lang was better than mike mangini by far. lets if mangini ever creates a drum part as epic as the crazy hi hat skills in these walls
True shit: heartless drumming, bad solo from McApline (WTF man!), and c'mon, some dynamics, that's supposed to be a pieced played on contrast beetwen "forte" and "piano", this shit is a big noise...
MP ist just happy to play with a bass-player who has an action radius more than 3 feet and moves more than a granny at the weekly disco (nothing against JM though, he IS great).
This was hard to watch... the whole thing just seemed lifeless, sloppy, desperate... DT are my favourite band and the original song is amazing, but this was just not an enjoyable performance at all in my opinion. Meh
whatever i like dream theater and i like portnoy projects ( maybe because im drummer ) this performance is good and nothing else matters ... petrucci is actually the soul of dream theater shure!! but FOR ME when mike was in the band mike was the brain and petrucci was the hearth i have no doubt!!
mike didnt leave DT!! he is in all of the DT albums (except a dramatic turn of events) let me tell ya somethin Mike Portnoy is DT the new album really sux, i like mangini but he trying to play all the old songs really sounds bad!! is good to see this kind of moments when u can hear again the founder of the band making the right, PLAYING HIS SONGS!!!! GOOD ONE PORTNOY!!!!!
@UtharkRuna John Petrucci was, is and will always be the SOUL of Dream Theater. Btw, this was a horrible performance. Portnoy is nothing without DT and DT is stil DT without him.
@UtharkRuna This vid proves Mike is just a drummer and not DT.Read the comments or are you realy that musicaly retarded. This sounds realy bad and DT sounds great. Do the math. Get Portnoys sack out of your mouth. Wow
@UtharkRuna There were 3 founders smartass. and if the new album sucks so much, how come it launched them up to a Grammy nomination? MP DID leave and the band makes a critically superb album. Coincidence? I think not. Why don't you remove your lips from MPs ass and see him how he really is.
@Crazycar213 that's being so ungrateful to MP's work over the years. He slaved 24/7 for DT and without him there would be no DT today anyway 'coz back in 1998 the band would have just collapsed at once...stop being rude please.
McAlpine is improvising. He is his own musician, why should he play Petrucci's solo? He isn't Petrucci. And last time I checked this is a one of performance not a Dream Theater tribute band. He is playing on time and on key? I don't see what everyone is bitching about.
Actually this is muuuuuch better than the Chaos in Motion one, which in my opinion was terrible, in this one you can feel a bunch of guys that still get along
@takeshiguadua Man you are totally crazy with this comment, you dont know anything about music, the chaos in motion version is muuuuuuch better and professional than this....besides, Sheehan and Macalpine have mistakes in the musical figures

dreamer1939 1 month ago
@dreamer1939 He's not covering DT dumbass ! he's playing a song that he wrote with them !
JulienDGrohl 1 month ago
@JulienDGrohl yeah yeah, a step closer to form a Dream Theater tribute band. Tecnically,
this IS a cover, beacuse is a DT song and none of them is a DT member.
dreamer1939 1 month ago

@MarkRiches Lyrics - John Petrucci, Music - DT. Even if he did have a huge part in writing, do not downplay the others that contributed.

man y does every one hate on mike portnoy n tbh dream theater is his band no matter what
jwe986 1 month ago
@jwe986 Um no it is not. He was one of THREE founders. He decided to leave which no longer makes it his. Just because he is a me monster saying, I did this and I did that til he is blue in the beard does not make it his. It makes him a control freak. And clearly DT benefited without him.
Crazycar213 1 month ago
@Crazycar213 thats ur view but tbh the new album is a pile of shit compared to the dt back catalogue n thomas lang was better than mike mangini by far. lets if mangini ever creates a drum part as epic as the crazy hi hat skills in these walls
jwe986 1 month ago
at 6:01 that sounds very ugly
MP next time try to play moonbabies... hehe.
pitpossum55 1 month ago
True shit: heartless drumming, bad solo from McApline (WTF man!), and c'mon, some dynamics, that's supposed to be a pieced played on contrast beetwen "forte" and "piano", this shit is a big noise...

MP ist just happy to play with a bass-player who has an action radius more than 3 feet and moves more than a granny at the weekly disco (nothing against JM though, he IS great).

It's nice to be able to hear the bass in a live DT song for a change!
TheBurnievator 1 month ago 4

UtharkRuna 1 month ago
@UtharkRuna John Petrucci was, is and will always be the SOUL of Dream Theater. Btw, this was a horrible performance. Portnoy is nothing without DT and DT is stil DT without him.
alushearo 1 month ago 2
@UtharkRuna This vid proves Mike is just a drummer and not DT.Read the comments or are you realy that musicaly retarded. This sounds realy bad and DT sounds great. Do the math. Get Portnoys sack out of your mouth. Wow
tonysarrio1 1 month ago 2
@tonysarrio1
ur argument - mp isnt dt
dt sounds great without mp
mp without dt sucks (this video)
therefore mp must suck.
did you drop out of high school or something? your logic is flawed in so many ways.
real1acer 1 month ago
@real1acer impossiburu, you are all 12.
transmoogrify 1 month ago
@UtharkRuna There were 3 founders smartass. and if the new album sucks so much, how come it launched them up to a Grammy nomination? MP DID leave and the band makes a critically superb album. Coincidence? I think not. Why don't you remove your lips from MPs ass and see him how he really is.
Crazycar213 1 month ago
@Crazycar213 that's being so ungrateful to MP's work over the years. He slaved 24/7 for DT and without him there would be no DT today anyway 'coz back in 1998 the band would have just collapsed at once...stop being rude please.
Pierrickbarro 1 month ago
McAlpine is improvising. He is his own musician, why should he play Petrucci's solo? He isn't Petrucci. And last time I checked this is a one of performance not a Dream Theater tribute band. He is playing on time and on key? I don't see what everyone is bitching about.

Actually this is muuuuuch better than the Chaos in Motion one, which in my opinion was terrible, in this one you can feel a bunch of guys that still get along
takeshiguadua 1 month ago
@takeshiguadua Man you are totally crazy with this comment, you dont know anything about music, the chaos in motion version is muuuuuuch better and professional than this....besides, Sheehan and Macalpine have mistakes in the musical figures
