Fisk here admits the differences between tribes and peoples within the Arab world, and I just can't begin to understand how all different tribes could have been protected in a vast superstate. Take the Kurds for example - in the Arab world there are merely a tiny proportion of it.
As much as I like Fisk, there seem to be some inconsistencies in what he says here. First, he talks about the fact that many of today's Arab nation states were actually created by Western Powers after WW1, and should be given the chance to define their own borders, but then states that the American idea to create one Arab nation was a good one (obviously despite being the fact that the Arab world wouldn't be creating it itself).
What a sharp and honest journalist Robert Fisk is, I am suprised I hadn't heard much about him before. I must admit that he has a great understanding of the historical and political context for regional issues, especially in a place as complex as the middle east.
Shame we don't see many objective rational journalists as Fisk these days.

@omsct He was criticising a fact and not suggesting for the future when he mensioned the absence of democracy. Because to him, and to me, democracy is the abvious way of ruling that potentially guarantees the basic rights of citizens, but this doesn't logically emply that I or he believe that it is the unique way for such purpose.
What can be emplyed and which is a plain fact is that human right are being violated on a large scale by those regimes.

@omsct The " own boarders arab wanted to define" are exactly that ones America wanted : one great arab state from Iraq and Persia gulf to Marroco on the Atlantic Ocean. And Fisk have stated this as an American dream as well as an Arab dream. So that wouldn't be " America define them ", but, rather, America against defining these artificial boarders by France and the UK against the will and the dream of people of the regon.

@mmsas1 Fair enough, I was wrong to assume that there were differences in the Arab and American plans. But, I still don't understand how this whole territorial region could really have worked. Fisk here admits the differences between tribes and peoples within the Arab world, and I just can't begin to understand how all different tribes could have been protected in a vast superstate. Take the Kurds for example - in the Arab world there are merely a tiny proportion of it.

As much as I like Fisk, there seem to be some inconsistencies in what he says here. First, he talks about the fact that many of today's Arab nation states were actually created by Western Powers after WW1, and should be given the chance to define their own borders, but then states that the American idea to create one Arab nation was a good one (obviously despite being the fact that the Arab world wouldn't be creating it itself).

What a sharp and honest journalist Robert Fisk is, I am suprised I hadn't heard much about him before. I must admit that he has a great understanding of the historical and political context for regional issues, especially in a place as complex as the middle east.
Shame we don't see many objective rational journalists as Fisk these days.

it all comes down to the incumbents appeasing their own people and manipulating them to believe in a biased version of history where injustice is legitimatized or completely ignored.. Muslims need an articulate leader who can blatantly and viciously confront the stereotypes and the pessimism concerning the Middle East.. a leader who can debunk propaganda voiced by Islamophobes and expose the corruption within the Islamic clergy THROUGH Islam itself.. Muslims need their Messiah.. search within

Fisk has it absolutely right! Change must come from within...Wz have to stop going there and liberating them and that way we can stop taking their refugees and expect those uneducated people to assimilate into Europe.

Fisk is part of a dying breed, he's journalist who doesn't merely recite government talking points as though they are facts. Whether you agree or disagree with him he is thought provoking and insightful. It's tragic that our media is now owned by corporations who are actively promoting government positions. This is true in the West and the rest of the world.

I agree with what you say, except I don't think that "Fisky" is a dying breed. Journalists like him have always been around and always will be. The thing is, you won't find them in the mainstream media. You have to search for them, patiently and with dedication. But when you find one, you find a gold mine and things suddenly start making sense. If, on the other hand, you watch only CNN and Fox, you only get angry and understand nothing.
