You know what I love about the Roma? They support adoption. You can be adopted into Romani society even if you're not Romani yourself. It can be official or unofficial. Sabina Wurmbrand, ethnically Jewish (her parents were Orthodox Jews), was more or less adopted by the Romani women with whom she was imprisoned--in Romania--under communism. She was there for being a pastor's wife. They were there for stealing bread crusts. They became very close. They even thought Sabina was a Rom.

After watching this, I just want to give a shout out to Mike Surrey and whoever designed Esmeralda (I can't find the lead animator's name). They really paid attention to the designs of their characters. Clo and Esme look very Romani (Book!Esme is actually a "gadje" adopted by the gypsies).

The most common Y-haplogroup in Roma men is haplogroup H (which originated from India). This haplogroup is not common in North India among the Punjabis but is common in central India. I feel that caste sensibility is actually sense of identity,which is historically the case with any European class.
Add to this the difficulties of surviving in a white Christian Europe from the 13thc onwards,and Rroma social identity cohesion was one of the few things individual Rroma could count on.
The Rroma are a mosaic of peoples,with many groupings and sub-groupings, I feel a blanket analysis is misplaced.

Of course what the ''majority'' thinks is relevant. In case you missed the memo, Roma are perhaps one of the most outcast groups within Europe, living in poverty-ridden ghettos on the fringes of modern society.
If you wish to speak on behalf on them as their spokesman, then you will have to encourage them to mingle more with people. Otherwise, they risk being treated as perpetual foriegners.
Indians as an ethnic minority group are one of the most successful in the UK.

You're forgetting that most Roma groups in Europe still practice Hindu purity laws that are common only to India. They tend to marry young and within their own communities, reflecting strong caste sensibilities like those found in India.
''600 years of not mixing'' is actually quite normal for people of Indian origin, where allele frequency differences between founder groups in India are larger than in Europe.

Honestly, I'm not concerned if Roma want to identify themselves with being white or European. Good luck to them.
Many of them have mixed with their host nations... however more than 1/3 of Roma males still have haplogroups that are only native to India.
I'm just pointing out that most Europeans (even the liberal ones) do not accept them as part of their European heritage.
