It is very rare I ever post comments - but Jacques Brel was so amazing and unique, I feel I have really missed something by not being around to see him perform live. Now I know that not only was Brel one of the greatest songwriters in history - he was also a captivating performer. Most of all, he has that quality that eludes all of our current performers: Passion.

As a translation for "bordel ambulant" can i suggest "mobile army whorehouse". This is from "Next" by The Sensational Alex Harvey Band c. 1974 - for an anglicisation of the lyrics and an equivalence to the passion with which Brel sings it, you could not do better. They gave Brel a writer's credit and this is what (somewhat belatedly) has led me here.

Here's a suggestion - why doesn't sergelebon (no relation to Simon I suppose) put up a translation. We could have like a collaborative thing going on between Serge and Virtualmix. Oh and while we are at it, what about Gnrbile (I'm sure people are just making up these names and it's not their real names at all - a nom de plume, if you like - huh hay, get me, being all french and that) yeah what about Gnrbile doing a translation just to spare us mere English people. I don't think Serge or Gnrbile or anybody else who make comment about translations never living up to the originals are suggesting the translated to language is inferior, just that every language has a unique form of expression and it can be very difficult to get the original meaning across in a translation. Therefore, translations can lack something in the mind of a person who speaks both languages.

It's true - any translation will never translate the exact cultural power of words from a language to another. For example in this song at the very end Brel says "Enfin un d' ces machins où...." and this phrase loose its power in any translations, the slang can't be really translated. Anyway, better is an honnest translation than no translation at all - and I hope that everyone use imagination to "feel/fill" the high value of what can't be translated.

You are right... ant translation in unperfect by definition. But with no translations, think of how much each culture would loose ! Better is approximative but honnest translations, than lack of translation. And, inside unpefrfection, I think that the non-native listeners may have the ability to translate the quality of lyrics inside their own feelings, just as if qualities in lyrics could be felt even throw language differences.

@Gnrlbile For sure the best french poet (for me) was a belgian (from some french dude). he puts emotions in every song i heard from him. If only every songs of Brel could be transalated in all language, people will see how great he was. (excuse my english is certainly not the best).

there seems to be a mistake in the translation for "au bordel ambulant..." (0:48) : "in the itinerant bloody mess" should be "in an itinerant brothel" (which presumably accompanies the army for the soldiers' relief). Bordel in french means brothel (hence the english word), and, per extenso, mess.
