let us hope people learn from this video about the dangers of static electricity. never do anything except hold your hand on the fuel nozzle until you are finished filling your car's fuel tank.
Our gas pump nuzzles in the uk seem to work differently, it seems in america you can lock the lever on the nozzle on so you can walk away while the car fills up? In the uk you can't do that, you have to stand with the nozzle and hold the lever down so you can't get back in the car and do what this poor woman did.
Pulling the nozzle from your vehicle is also one of the worst mistakes you can make if you see a fire. You are better off leaving it in your car and running. This woman was just really lucky.
@Darquan223 I have to disagree. The last thing you want is for there to be a continuous supply of fuel to the fire. The fuel flow was cut off at once. There is a spring-loaded flap in the pipe in the car. There was probablly a massive over-load of fuel-to-oxygen in the pipe, so chance of explosion is small. Most people do not stay that calm. Notice that she gets the nozzle as far as possible from BOTH her vehicle and the gas pumps.
@leftysergeant Wrong. You do NOT touch the nozzle after a fire starts. You run away. See video called "MythBusters Cell Phone Gas Station Myth" where they illustrate how wrong removing the nozzle is.
As soon as you get out of your vehicle...immediately touch the body of your vehicle to remove the static charge
do this before going near the gas cap or gas pump and you won't have any problems....well unless some whacko rams your vehicle and traps you between the pump and the vehicle...then you are pretty much screwed like that woman who died in colorado
It is *very dangerous* to get in and out of a car while refueling it! In dry weather you can build a static charge between your body and the car while siding off the seat, and if you discharge near the nozzle you can ignite the fuel vapor. You should always keep your hand on the nozzle during refueling, both to quickly stop overfills and to avoid fires like the one above.
She saved the car... But had it been me, I would have run leaving the pump there. Why? Simply because a vapor gas explosion only takes an instant to wipe you and the car out. In other words, it could have blown up as she was reaching for the pump.. Or maybe not, but I'm not an expert on it.
Not to mention pulling the gas nozzle out wile it was on fire. Possible the dumbest thing you can do. she got lucky. Here in Oregon there is a ban on self service fuel (no extra charge for the full service) And we're trained on how to treat gass fires, spills, ect.
The car didn't explode because she pulled the pump out of the hole. There's that little metal flap that goes over the top of your gas tank you know? That cut off the oxygen and stopped the fire.
That little flap is accualy to stop the fuel from "burping" back out at you. Pulling the nozzle out was probably the dumbest thing she did there. The car wouldn't have "exploded" anyway, it may have burnt, but that's far better than looseing youre life anyday. Plus the station's insurance would have paid for the damages.
dream on "maskasdk3000" Indians will never be able to do job same way as Maericans do. I manage an acount with India and have 30 people reporting to me (Mumbai- LNT) there job is low quality and they are never serious with there jobs !! So bottom line "Low price and more quantity of labour does not give you Quality". :) Good if the Indians go back to there country, we will have less polution in US :)
Electrostatic is exactly why this fire was caused! Female drivers tend to start the pump then sit back down in the vehicle. Getting in and out of the driver seat generates a static charge and if she would have touched the frame of the vehicle first, instead of the pump handle, this likely would not have occurred.
Then she compounded the problem by pulling the nozzle out of the tank. She was lucky she didn't cause the fire to spread by panicing!
This is the reason why I ground myself whenever I get off the car at a gasoline station.

And what about the fact that fuel could still get out of the pump? I'm more concern about the gas from the pump rather than the fuel in the car.

i think i would have shut the cap , lack of air may have stopped it and the nozzle would have closed anyway when you let go .
easy to say that tho i guess

I agree with Jack, assuming no other passengers in the car, I think I would have ran immediately. She is lucky she did'nt get cooked.

wow i cant believe she actually tried to put the fire out for a few seconds... the moment i see that gas nozzle on fire i am RUNNING FOR THE HILLS.

1. She should not have left the gas pump, 2. she should not have put on a sweater, especially one that can create static.
