  • Thats awesome. The GN had a late start AND SPun through 1st and 2nd AND still came back on the STI. Great race. BUICK TURBO 6 FTW!!!!

  • 2 dislikes? I guess someone has never heard of the Grand National.

  • Hahaha, turbo lag is so cool on these cars.

  • Actually, the GN crushed the Subaru. It had a bad start, and could even arrive first... Beast of a car.

  • @machone7I not a bad start. STI are good on one and only one thing: start, They are impossible to beat on a start but are weak on top end.

  • @00117064 Sure, but the GN driver had a late start, and also the car had some wheelspin sacrificing acceleration.

  • a gn to a gnx is the same as a wrx to a sti ..

please see my hybrid .. subaru legacy gt 2005 with a grand national engine.

suabaru traction and handeling with buick torque !

  • Yup the GN-X is a GN with better parts in the suspension, intercooler, turbo and fender flares...evillll love it!

  • All they did was add an intercooler and body parts for looks. Its the same 3.8 v6 thats in 97 olds 88 fwd. It was the torque that was the true killa, The GNX only had about 290 documented HP but had almost 400 fp of torque. Plus it was a regal, it weighed around 3200lbs. This is in my opinion GM's greatest engine, my mom has a 1986 olds delta 88 with over 400,00 miles and "NO REBUILD". Thats how you build an engine. Cars like the sti weigh to much, power to weight ratio...

  • @mjq167 gnx has a larger turbo, ported heads, looser converter, and a torque arm strut for traction.

  • dammm...this grandnational...have balls...even thogh he was burning almost till 3 gear...he stills smokes dat sti.....

  • Who won?

  • @RightHookJoker r u really that fuckn blind?

  • @GGGGGGGTHEBEST7 Yes. lol

  • @71stingray all cars have clutches, no matter if there electronic or manual. this was beefed up, to handle more power. i know what im talking about

  • @PSPmodder14 Sorry but you're incorrect there bud. Manuals have a clutch unless you are referring to the ultra high tech manuals of today with paddle shifters then yes technically you're right. But in reality the GN and GNX had an auto trans mission with a Torque Converter. That is what allows the engines torque to be delivered through the drivetrain.

  • GN's were the standard regals with a turbo and some beefed up suspension, clutch, read end, and other minor tweaks, but the GNX had beefed up everything! a ceramic turbo puttin down about 10 - 17 pounds depending if u threw on a boost controller, and had performance clutch, along with beefier suspension, rear end, etc than the GN. it had about 330 HP ... thats about 50 - 60 more than a GN

  • @PSPmodder14

go mod psp's u know nothing about gns.. clutch? their auto.. all of them.

  • gatta love wnedover

  • expected outcome..

subie spanks the low end but GN takes the high end..

  • instead of posting a common "this car is better than that car" comment...im just gonna say

    (:

  • Yeeeeeeee haaaaaaw go GN go !!!

  • @stephenswickedcool...and there was only 547 made. not the 5000 you said lol. do some research before giving ppl bad info...

  • @stephenswickedcool...your wrong about the gnx....it wasnt supercharged. it was still turbo. bigger turbo, and it was tuned by mclaren. it also had a really cool traction bar under it that pushed the rear end up and the rear tires down under acceleration. but they were turbos. the fastest 0-60 car in the world in 1987. faster than a countach

  • @willcat99

    it had a ladder bar.

  • from a dig the sti had to get a jump on it, its all wheel drive. but in the stretch, the buick CREAMED THAT BITCH

  • lovee both cars

  • ok...so what is the main difference between the gn and a gnx?

    hp and torque?

  • @justin0185 A supercharger and better suspension

  • @stephenswickedcool

never knew the gnx was supercharged wow.. what were they rated at?

i just recently got the gn bug, my father just picked up an 87 gn like 3-4 weeks ago and DAMN let me tell you the thing is straight up DISGUSTINGLY fast. he had a 70 stage 1 455 that was bored .30 over that he had to get rid of and it broke my heart. that thing would brake the tires loose at 80 all day . there are very few cars that can fill the void of the stage 1 (not completely) this one is very close.

  • @justin0185 They only made 5,000 of the supercharged ones, it was called the Grand National GNX, only made for the year 1987. Very VERY rare cars, they pushed over 300 horsepower in 1987 they were a big deal

  • @stephenswickedcool

it's not really that it had 300 horses it just used them very efficiently.

  • @ilshwak huge power to weight ratio. Lots of cars have 600 hp now and still cant kill the GN. I cant believe the GN beat the viper in that other video. Im starting to lose respect for the viper.

  • @WhatIThinke its not that the viper should not be respected, its just that the Grand National Demands alot more respect.

  • @justin0185 a 455 in a gn, this was not a true gn. they came with turbo charged v6

  • @lioookm

noooo you mis-read my comment man, i said my father had a 1970 buick gs stage 1 with a 455 bored .30 over before he had bought the gn

  • hahaha after completing half of the 1/4 mile it was still spinning its wheels

  • Gns are legend.

  • Okay just to clarify things...the GNX is technically a higher end Grand National...they have the same motor but there are a few differences that caused the GNX to be better.

    1. The turbo was ceramic coated (faster spool)

    2. The intercooler was slightly modified

    3. The suspension gave the GNX better launches (the rear end lifted, causing the body to be better proportioned and taking the powerload easier)

    4. The electronics were reprogrammed

  • @WhatAFluke wow you did your homework nice to see somebody on here that actually appreciates this car and knows alot of great detailed facts about it

  • @jamestaggreen haha thanks i actually own an 87 grand national myself and i absolutely love it. Its my weekend warrior, and one day i hope on getting it into 10's. However, i'm actually looking into getting an evo or sti for an everyday driver =P i love both imports and muscle, and both are great in certain areas.

  • @WhatAFluke a buddy of mine has a 1986 T-Type, with the rare bench seat and column shift. its into the 9s now.

  • @WhatAFluke and trans was reworked. different shift points and higher stall tc. also had fender flares and vents. the GNX was actuall listed as a package option for the regal. it cost just as much as a TR. like a 17k option package...give or take a grand

  • Muscle Car own when drive by good driver =p

  • GN had a bad start

  • @retroman360 and still won

  • that was a gn not even a gnx cause the gnx would have butt raped the sti

  • wow its a gn not a gnx?.....good thing u know its only a gn and not a gnx(*which are exactly the same thing)

  • grand national and gnx are completely different

  • the grand national and gnx are no different, a few tweaks and thats its the same car from 84-87(82s were white) so wat were you saying.....a honda civic coupe and a sedan are the same car(like i said was the gn and gnx) just a little tweaking BITCH

    82(4.1lv6/125hp/205ft.lbs.)

    84(3.8lv6/200hp/300ft.lbs.)

    86-87(3.8lv6/276hp/360ft.lbs.)

  • the GNX was made for one year only, and had a completely different engine, suspension, cost 11k more and had over 50hp more than the grand national did. they do look nearly identical, so i understand why one could think they are the same thing.

  • i know it was a months time ago but the gnx also had a better suspension package then the regular grand nationals.

  • @cwbn10a5ee 84 and 85 were hot air turbo cars with a different ignition system. 86-87 were intercooled. different emc too.

  • weak start

  • the grand national won the race and he was peeling tires until third gear..... thats far from weak =)

  • @Jacobbz206 video to short no suspense at the start thats what i ment

  • Yea they should make a GNX with the 3800Series3 or a new block it would be crazy imagine a twin turbo muscle car flat black 80 series flowmaster, lowerd at the front and big wheels at back like a vett. 4 speed lol

  • yea that would be cool but aslong as its Rear wheel drive off course

  • U know it or else i wouln't call it a muscle car, a muscle dont drive with the front wheels he lifts them.

  • They wouldnt use a flowmaster or a 4speed and it would more likely be a single turbo, seeing as the 3800 is a torque freak as is. It is perfectly possible and series II and III are built well enough from the factory to strap a fuel pump, injectors and turbo. Tune ofcourse.

  • Well dont u have to tune up the engine so it can hold more compression if ur series 2 engine dont come with a turbo....

  • A dyno tune from a well known reliable company is a must.

  • Wut do u mean a Dyno tune?

  • You can tune yourself on the road and you have a company tune you on the dyno. You can also purchase a pre-tuned pcm, though it will not be as spot on as a dyno tune.

Just search for dyno tune, youll get the jist of it.

  • i think its funny the wrx is an all wheel drive car and the gnx is beat it

  • Not a GNX!

  • both of my favorite cars ight there the reasons gn's are so fast cuz being a bigger v6 "3.8" and th turbo keeps the car aceleration and being a auto tranny. the 2.5 H4 wrx every time it shifts the blow off valve looses all the boost then has to try to make it up again

  • Sorry but what just said didn't make sense but i kind of understang what your saying This will make it easier THAT BUICK IS JUST BADASS .

  • what are u gay?

  • Are you gay?? Are you RETARDED because from the looks of it. Its seems to me you are.

  • Its amazing when a 20 year old legend can still beat new performance cars. They should bring the GN & GNX back with some new technology and a V6. GM could still build the fastest V6 turbo on the road car if they did things right, ...like they did 20 years ago.

  • If you watch close, you do realize that the driver of the GN starts horribly late.

  • and had the tires smoking 1/3 of the way down the strip, but it still won.

  • Grand National not a GNX! Most GNX owners don't race there cars. (They're worth too much. :^P)

  • I second that! It's hard to set by and see these people talk shit about what they don't know. GNX would win if it's stock to stock, or modded to modded. Don't get me wrong, I love all cars and especially Subie's but the facts are facts. I also don't just set behind a computer, I race, build engines, am now currently into old skool rods and work in the automotive field. I think that gives me enough credit to post.

  • Right on dude, nice to know you're not just one of those guys that reads HP and 0-60 numbers out of magazines. Hope all goes good for you

  • and yet u cant spell school

stock to stock that STi would win

and how can u say modded to modded they would win??? whats the mods?

  • Old "Skool" Rods is actually a Car Culture Magazine... In a straight line the GNX would win. In the twisties though it wouldn't have a chance in hell as they still handle like a boat. As for the modded thing, I agree that you can't accurately compare a car to a car without knowing whats been done to them. In a drag race though, the GNX is the better pic. If your using a car for gymkhana then the Subie is the way better choice. Now go play with your grandmothers Oldsmobile..

  • Damn you just served every mother fucker in here with that comment good shit man good fucking shit

  • GN, not GNX.

  • GNX seemed to get no traction at all he was smoking the tires all the way through first

  • That GNX has a t67 turbo. Thats way more mods than what that STI had.

  • That is the slowest T67 GN I have ever seen. That is enough turbo to put that car in the bottom of the 10s. I fully restored an 87 GN and used only a PT61 and the car ran high 11s on pump gas. A T67 turboed GN would have put an area code on that STI.

  • Supras use the same turbo so I would agree that a T67 turbo would smoke that STI. Like mentioned here before that STI has and exhaust and a tune. It helps but its not gonna beat a big turbo.

  • area code?

    FAIL

  • arent both of the cars a stock turbo motor?

  • Thats a grand national . you can tell by the wheels . nice catch up . i love that car. thats what got me on to turbo is my dads 87 grand. Power is an addicttion

  • BUH BYE!

  • Better then being a bus driver...

  • Nice GN, but for all the people bashing STi, that's a nearly stock STi, with ONLY exhaust and a reflesh, vs a T67...

    Hmmmmmm.....

a more fair race would me a scooby with gt35r

  • For all that noise, the Grand National still caught up to the Subaru

  • Basic platform with extra power by more displacment or by Forced induction 1st gto was a economy with a 389

Lil red express, war lock, 454ss,typhoon,syclone,lightning, Ranchero GT,el camino ss Ram sport(RT) muscle truck.

fwd car that came close GTP,Regal GS. blower cars, Tarus sho, shelby mopars

  • American Muscle can be a V6 or V8, but must be rear wheel drive.

  • Actually, dont attack me here but I think American Muscle refers to any modified, american made, 2 door car with RWD

  • That GNX needs wider tires and other mods for better grip.

  • its a GN not GNX......a GNX is a whole different animal. in a good way even though a GN is still a beast. A GNX is a beast on steroids

  • True, my bad.

  • yep if this waz GNX then this race wudve been over from the start

  • @lg69riv Kind of like the new Challenger RT and the SRT

  • @lg69riv the biggest difference between the GN and GNX is motor size. The GN had a 3.8l V6 and the GNX was packing a 4.1l V6.

  • @djpudgey umm no, the gnx had the exact same 3.8L v6. asc mclaren just increased the power of it substantially.

  • @djpudgey are you sure about that ??? There is no mention anywhere the GNX had a 4.1L. It just had an intercooler and motor work + ECU yet using the same 3.8L Turbo engine

  • @lg69riv god himself drivers a GN and has a GNX sitting in his garage.

  • Some of you guys keep saying "American Muscle". I thought American Muscle was the trait of having a large displacement V8...Not some 3.8 liter V6 with a single turbo...

  • wrong american muscle is american made cars!

  • So a Geo Metro is American Muscle?

  • Lol, so yea, is a Geo Metro American muscle???

  • Gm owned a portion of suzuki in the 90s rebadged the suzuki swift. So yeah that lil gem was jappanese. Renault owns Nissan does that make the GTR French?

  • GM also owns a bit of Nissan.

  • Powerful American made car is American Muscle. Though the term usually refers to classic ('60s, '70s, '80s), V6 or V8 driven vehicles.

  • OK, cool. So my neighbors Dodge Ram 3500 making I don't know...400rwhp and 800fttq is American muscle too? I just want some help because so far, your explanation is too vague.

  • Yes it is my friend.

  • That GN burned rubber for like 1/8 mile and still whooped the STI.

  • both terrible take offs lol

  • Wow...late start much by the GN? Lol...and still won :) good ole American muscle.

  • i love all the comments saying the GN isn't a reliable car, to start with the 3.8 was and is one of the most reliable motors ever made, and even with out a turbo the 3.8 is a strong runner. my 97 Buick came w 205hp and 235trq. with a intake and exhaust i smash imports all the time. so think twice next time roll up on a Buick

  • if i got a american car it would be one of these i love sleepers

  • you know i bet the gn would do more than hold its own on a road course with that thing. they had some pretty trick suspension for an 80s car

  • Uhm.. its a dinosaur suspense since the 60s.

  • i dont know why people drag race STi's. theyre a better overall car than the buick but of course the buick will win a drag race, thats what its made for. the STi is capable of running 7's but the buick is capable of a faster time than 7's. the STi is a great car but i wish the driver would use it for its purpose like everything asides from drag racing its a very beautiful versatile car but the buick owns the drag strip

  • 7's? In what? 1/8 mile? Bullshit!

  • yeah man i absolutely love the sti.....in fact its one of my 3 dream cars along with the gn and supra....but i have never in my life seen an sti run 7's...8's yes but i have not seen one break into the 7's yet....and i've only seen a couple gn's break into the 6's

  • Comment removed

  • Buick Grand Nationals ironically were made as a LUXURY car, not a race car, GM just had the darn luck of making some of the best engines that are used in that car.

It was unintentionally turned into one of the best American racing cars you can find on the market, aside from the 80's mustang 5.0L. the 80's where a pinnacle of American car making, a stock 3.8L Buick V6 turbo pulling 300 ft lbs of torque was a huge feat, especially in America's 80's, with the way Injection was during the time.

  • freakin buick got beat in the first 300 feet but then that tturbo kicked in and all that sti saw was a nice g body rear end

  • road course the sti at least if your gunna race it!

just my opinion though what do I know

  • gentleman, all cars are great i believe we are all here watching this because we love cars, GN's are beautiful machines, Stis are great too, you just set a car with a V6 turbo vs a 4 cyl boxer turbo with a more complicated D.T. , do remember its AWD, and the GN is RW....its notable the advantage the GN had, had this been a ralley, things would be diff., think about it..

  • exactly, let the kids who waste their money converting RALLY cars INTO DRAG CARS get whopped all day long by the 80's!

what a complete waste to even try and convert a SICK AS FUCKING WRC car into a dragger unless your the owner of a mod shop then get on with your life and dont fill the lanes at a drag strip. Go rally with your rally car for god's sake!

  • true very true, thats a blunt and well set point, but hey you know they never learn...

  • american muscle!!! still a six but still a chevy...

  • What do you mean "still a Chevy"? It is a Buick built 231 CI engine. This engine without the turbo was in several Chevys over the years but it isnt a Chevy engine. Buick all the way. Yes, I own one. An 86 street car with some mods. Runs mid 11's all day on pump gas. After racing @ the track. I drive it home & get milage in the 20's.

  • BY A BUICK!!!!

    FROM THE 80's HAHAHAHAHAHHAHA

  • that comment right there, thats funny shit, lol

  • you really have no idea what the word ricer means, idiot.

  • agreed muscle car fanboys are so close minded. all the know are heavy and generally ( but not all of the time ) fugly cars. i do like the GN's but id still rather have a sti. i know a guy that has a gn his runs 11's at the track..and it gets ate up by imports all of the time.

  • lol. i'd like to see were you live. theres 11 and 10sec imports roaming everywere? Around here they just make noise and pretend to be fast. I think Vtech just kicked in. lol

  • yep actualy there are....there are quite a few 800 to 1100hp supras, evos, sti's we have alot of very fast imports where i live. we also have alot of fast v8's. still im more into imports then v8's unless if its a foxbody mustang, thats the only v8 i would drive.

  • 11's in a GN is an K&N filter, exhaust and chip away. 3 parts; filter, exhaust, chip...less then 500$ to get a 1986 regal into the 11's (with the regal costing about 10k to begin with used of course) so 10k and $500 hmm an 11 second car for 10.5k. just barely a 1/3 of the cost of an STI rofl.

sorry but STI is slower, more expensive and just got owned lol

grindbass its wth does road racing have to do with this drag racing video thread that is what i want to know....whose the stupid one again?

  • Find me a regal for 10,000.. cheapeast i've found was 16k and also you have to take into account reliability. STI is a great car.

  • I posted a reply with more then 3 cars for sale for less then 10k but I guess it got deleted because its not here anymore.

goto turbobuick dot come and you'll see that one their FRONT PAGE (the 1st page of the CARS FOR SALE section) you will find a HANDFULL of GN's and Ttypes for less then 10k

again silly ricers 16k for a turbo regal rofl give me a break

go watch some JDM movies or something 16k for a turbo regal is retarded just like your comments.

  • no problem ricer

stick with mommy and daddy sponsored sti's okay lol

  • the sti is only pushin maybe 350. put the turbo header uppipe downpipe and front mount on that sti and say good bye

  • Wow! the GN came out of the box late and still whooped the sti's ass. HA

  • sick huh what a fun ride!

and its an 86, he was probably listening to the radio with 1 hand on the steering wheel.....in overdrive haha, silly ricers awd tricks are for kids not drag racers!

  • You're stupid, both of you. There is top and low end power, awd and rwd, you act like you've never seen a car lose after getting the jump before. Drag racing is for kids, road racing is a much higher test of car and driver. You know...those tracks with the turns in em? You see em once a year im sure when the Nascars try to clusterfuck their way around one...thats some funny shit, only time i'll watch it is to laugh at them on a road course. I like all cars really, just not all people.

  • Yep that is exactly what happens when you race a TURBO BUICK.

  • The Buick was giving him a head start. Every car needs a big advantage when racing a turbo buick! Just watch the race, You'll see!

  • was late on the light spun like hell and still caught the other car got to love GN

  • It's seems the Buick has won the day :-)

  • buick is better

  • GN's start was horrible, no traction even after 60ft tires still smokin'.

  • yeah but that's sad for the STI cause the buick still whipped its ass!!!

  • How so? I had an exhaust and tune and lost by only a little to a very well built t67 grand national. I was quite happy with how i did.

  • You took off with a full 2 car lead and still got beat? No disrespect but maybe your driving skill may be in question.

  • wait a second...Do you really make sense here? If he launched on the guy and was ahead, with a less powerful car, but got beat at the end -- wouldn't that mean that he did very well driving his car vs a quicker car??! Think a little. The GN owner is who needs improvement on his driving.

  • the subaru will always get the jump being awd. he should of gotten out further actually.

  • I think the proper race would be a scylone or typhoon vs the subie or evo to really show what that v6 can do. Even if it s the stage 2(4.3 up from the GN s 3.8) its the trucks awd that would even things out. Please post a vid what that happens. Scys and Typhs are the overlooked members of the GN,GNX,T TYPE,LIMITED,LIMITED LeSABRE FAMILY even though the Lesabre was fwd and no turbo six mill the blackout package in 86 and only 112 produced made them the rarest aof the whole family.T SIXES RULE

  • well the gn still won reguardless of awd

anyone see that new evo vs gn video, the gn can't even start and the kids got all wet haha.

but hell yea, i have time for GM owning! GM DOING WORK! VIVA SUBY VIVA GM

    DS

  • Heres what you can do. Put an all wheel drive trans on the gn or put a rear wheel drive trans on the subaru. Then see who wins. Simple as that. Anyways, Subaru is a General Motors car, so, General Motors rules over any other brand!

  • t67 isn't old rofl! the only thing old on most GN's is the frame, the motors are sick with it and every year get faster and faster

  • lol the turbo's in those old GN'n are as big as ur head.

  • haha, old 80's technology ftw

  • turbo V6 vs turbo H4, the grand national should've won by more lengths than that. Both are great cars!

  • I agree. Did you see the smoke show he put on and the delayed launch? If he could hook and launch properly, then it wuld have been that "more lengths" you were talking about. :)

  • nice gn all the way

  • Nice!!!!!!!!!
