Amazing as it might seem to you all in the US, but I always thought this version was sung by Johnny Cash! Actually I wouldn't be able to recognize Johnny Horton's voice, as I grew up in the communist era Czechoslovakia. Today I listened to it (heard it many times before, but without name being announced!) and it amazes me how close it is both to Elvis and Johnny Cash! Those of you who grew up in the US can never dream of hearing / recognizing Johnny Horton only after Elvis and J. Cash. :-)
my uncle hootie would baby sit me drink a 30pack plus of beer and listen to johny horton and old bootlegged grand ole opry tapes he taught me a lot of kindness and he was the most gentle soul on the planet here is to ya hute i love and miss you
My band, the Poor Boys once was the warmup act for Johnny Horton at the Ector County Coliseum in Odessa, TX. For some reason Johnny and I were alone in the "green room" such as it was. I was telling him I had just been offered a football scholarship from a major university. He told me he'd been offered a basketball scholarship at Baylor and had turned it down. He said he regretted it and encouraged me to pursue my education. I did and it sure paid off for me. Richard of the Poor Boys
My Grandma, Grandpa, and I were playing this record at their house about a week ago. While we were playing it, my grandma told me my grandpa used to sing this song when they were dating 50 years ago. I thought this was such a great story !
I love Johnny Horton and I love John Wayne movies, i could listen to Johnny Horton all day and night and I could watch John Wayne movies (mostly the westerns) all day if I could. We have quite a few on DVD.
My brother as young man at the age of 12 loved this song and he would sing, you see he pass away it will be two years jan 10-2010 and I can go back and listen to these song and remember him in blue jeans and a big belt buckel and singing this song Thank You for putting these songs to bring back to me MY BROTHER MY FRIEND and MY DAD, Thank You JESUS for a wonderful child of GOD, What a most wonderful GIFT.
